Denise was a member of the Liturgy Working Group for\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">All Creation Sings\u202f\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">and author of this lament.<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0*<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cLamenting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Racism<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d in\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augsburgfortress.org\/AllCreationSings\">All Creation Sings<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">offers an entry point to the complexities of racism, making space to consider and mourn the effects of racism.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why lament?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hy a lament, as opposed to a prayer or litany? This lament is intended as an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">action that a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cknowledge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0what has been broken in our relationship with our neighbor \u2013 the neighbor that we as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ELCA<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are called to love as we love ourselves.\u00a0Specifically<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this lament is a way to recognize points of brokenness in the relationship between the ELCA and African Americans.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0even after\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lamenting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, there is still\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to do.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The other theological work of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lament is that it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">invites\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">contemplation\u00a0of confession and forgiveness,\u00a0reparation, and reconciliation.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As members of the ELCA, we can lament racial\u00a0inequity\u00a0as a reflection of a societal problem, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">then\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work to make the church and society more\u00a0equitable.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We are freed in Christ to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">serve our neighbor by actively remediating\u00a0inequity.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Using this lament<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Please include<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0this prayer in your worship\u00a0planning. You may want to add it to worship during Black History Month or for the commemoration of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he Emanuel Nine<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(June<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a017)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, or in vigils or healing services<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But please know that this lament is not limited to a certain commemoration<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, church season,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">type of worship service,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or time of year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This lament can be a way to\u00a0begin:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bible studies<\/li>\n<li>Book club discussions<\/li>\n<li>Adult education hour<\/li>\n<li>Online events<\/li>\n<li>Staff meetings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The most obvious connection may be to use this lament in situations\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that deal with racial or racist themes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0But in reality, race\u00a0\u2013 even\u00a0White\u00a0race \u2013 is always an issue. Therefore this lament can be used any time, for many various purposes.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be creative!\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You could:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Use as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0part of a personal prayer or meditation practice, changing the \u201cwe\u201d to \u201cI\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Focus on the prayer during a national time of ethnic recognition\/celebration (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">African Descent; American Indian and Alaska Native; Indigenous Peoples within Canada; Arab and Middle Eastern; Asian and Pacific Islander; and Latinx community\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Heritage months)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lead a discussion \/ plan a lesson about the lament for confirmation, adult education, etc.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The very word \u201cracism\u201d engenders emotional response. And\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0OK.
