The communities on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua are still struggling to recover.  Scientists predict that should the globe continue to warm, we can expect fiercer and more frequent storms.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">I guess I should not have been surprised when Palin came out and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/12\/08\/AR2009120803402.html\">denied climate change<\/a>. \u00a0This of course led to a delightful response from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/21134540\/vp\/34348321#34348321\">Al Gore<\/a>. \u00a0And the blogosphere rejoiced&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">So with the Copenhagen meetings climate change is a big topic of conversation. \u00a0 To kick of the summit, the results of a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/people-press.org\/report\/556\/global-warming\">recent poll<\/a> were announced in which it was found that fewer Americans believe in climate change than did just six months ago (a fifteen point shift in just six months). \u00a0Coincidentally, I was speaking with a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ge-at.iastate.edu\/takle.shtml\">climatologist from Iowa State<\/a> this past weekend, and I asked him if all the recent scientific reports (such as the 2005 IPCC report that unequivocally stated that climate change is indeed happening and 2007 IPCC report that stated that human produced carbon emissions play a role in it) have helped in shifting public opinion. \u00a0He told me it&#8217;s actually brought more people out to challenge it, especially from energy sectors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">I won&#8217;t delve into the discussion, you already know my thinking on it from <a href=\"http:\/\/hungerrumblings.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/focus-area-2-climate-change-and-hunger.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/hungerrumblings.blogspot.com\/2009\/03\/pragmatism.html\">here<\/a>. \u00a0While I appreciate the public debate (I just wish it was more often based on facts instead of ideology, on both sides), I want us to think more about those who are poor and vulnerable (like this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=121274647\">story on NPR<\/a> this morning). \u00a0Often the debate is about protecting self-interests&#8211;energy consumption and energy independence, national security, economic strength, and so on. \u00a0While these are important issues, and may be excellent motivators to actually get something done, I think we fail to see that this is fundamentally a justice issue. \u00a0Those who are least responsible for climate change bear the brunt of its impact.
