{"id":3241,"date":"2013-09-11T09:29:11","date_gmt":"2013-09-11T14:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/hungerrumblings\/?p=3241"},"modified":"2013-09-11T09:29:11","modified_gmt":"2013-09-11T14:29:11","slug":"the-gospel-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/worldhunger\/the-gospel-in-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gospel in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>&#8216;The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> because he has anointed me<\/em><br \/>\n<em> to bring good news to the poor.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and recovery of sight to the blind,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0to let the oppressed go free,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0to proclaim the year of the Lord\u2019s favor.\u2019\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\">Luke 4:18-19<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Debates about intervention in Syria are raging right now.\u00a0 Thankfully, it seems as if a diplomatic solution may be at hand.\u00a0 While we can be cautiously optimistic about this, it is far from a perfect answer to the problem of suffering in Syria. In the midst of the argument about whether Syria should be punished with military strikes or chastened with diplomacy, one key fact is lost.\u00a0 <b>Whatever the response is, the poor will most likely lose.\u00a0 <\/b><\/p>\n<p>From the prophets\u2019 sharp words against those who mistreat the needy (see Isaiah 10:1-2; Amos 8:4-6; and Ezekiel 22:23-31), to Jesus\u2019 proclamation in Luke, the Bible witnesses to God\u2019s particular concern for the lives and well-being of the poor and needy.\u00a0 Whether we look at the law in Deuteronomy 15, the Gospel of Luke, or the commands of Christ in Matthew 25: 34-40, the Bible is also clear that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookoffaith.org\/bof_new\/matthew25.htm\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Christians are likewise called to show this concern<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean practically?\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean that we must shout from the mountaintops that wealth is wrong and all rich people are evil.\u00a0 Nor does it mean that we believe all poor people are godly.\u00a0 Instead, having a special concern for the poor means that when we think about justice and consider the right thing to do as a society or country, Christians are called to ask first, \u201cHow does this affect the poor?\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3242\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/hungerrumblings\/2013\/09\/Syria-blog-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3242\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3242   \" style=\"margin-right: 8px;margin-left: 8px\" alt=\"ACT\/Paul Jeffrey\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/hungerrumblings\/2013\/09\/Syria-blog-pic-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3242\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ACT\/Paul Jeffrey<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since the conflict in Syria began in Spring 2011, <a href=\"http:\/\/english.al-akhbar.com\/content\/poor-get-poorer-syria?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+AlAkhbarEnglish+%28Al+Akhbar+English%29\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">the median salary in Syria has fallen 41%<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 The costs of goods like food, fuel, and electricity, meanwhile have increased exponentially. The <a href=\"http:\/\/documents.wfp.org\/stellent\/groups\/public\/documents\/ena\/wfp258332.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">UN\u2019s World Food Programme reported in July 2013<\/span><\/a> that nearly 4 million Syrians are unable to secure food for themselves, a situation made worse by economic sanctions against the Syrian government.\u00a0 Farmers are not able to obtain parts for machinery or export their goods.\u00a0 Oil production is down almost 80%, while inflation due to a lack of foreign investment is up almost 50%.\u00a0 Sanctions have also made it difficult for Syrians to obtain medicines and vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>The diplomatic solution offered by Russia may ensure that chemical weapons are no longer used in the conflict.\u00a0 A military strike may do the same.\u00a0 But we should not be so optimistic as to believe that the status quo of economic sanctions is without its own form of suffering.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/article\/violence-and-hunger-killing-a-generation-of-syrian-children\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Is it really a victory if we prevent children from being \u201cgassed to death\u201d only to allow them to die a slower death from hunger or disease?\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we ask the pressing questions about intervention and diplomacy, we, as a church called to serve \u201cthe least of these,\u201d should ask a different question of ourselves: <b><i>What is the \u201cgood news\u201d we are called to reveal to the poor in Syria?<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 We join with other people of goodwill in debating the US\u2019s response to the crisis, but our focus must be on what else the international community is going to do to protect the poor, who are most vulnerable in this situation.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lutheranworld.org\/content\/response-syrian-refugees-jordan\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Lutheran World Federation<\/span><\/a> is trying to do this in Jordan by managing a large refugee camp there.\u00a0 The 120,000 refugees in that camp are few, given the 2 million refugees from Syria, but they are still greater in the number than the merely 2,000 Syrian refugees that the US has invited in to our country.\u00a0 Does being concerned for the poor mean asking our government to increase the number of refugees it will allow in?\u00a0 Perhaps.\u00a0 Does caring for the vulnerable mean looking for ways to lift sanctions and control inflation in Syria?\u00a0 Maybe.\u00a0 Though the solution is uncertain, the challenge is clear: protecting the vulnerable must mean more than merely solving the problem of chemical weapons. <strong>How will we bring \u201cgood news to the poor\u201d and \u201cproclaim the year of the Lord\u2019s favor\u201d in the midst of this conflict?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>To support the work of the ELCA and its companions in Syria, please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Syria\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">www.elca.org\/Syria<\/span><\/a>. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Ryan P.
