Every\u00a0spring, I look forward to playing outside\u00a0all summer (some people call it yard work). In among the flowers and trees in my little backyard playground, I grow a few herbs\u00a0— basil, oregano, sage, chives, thyme and parsley — and, of course, a tomato plant. Last summer’s parsley plant actually survived the winter, much to my surprise,\u00a0and it’s a lovely dark green lacy ball in the midst of my perennials. The chives put up cheerful little purple pom-poms in early summer, and the glossy bright green of the basil looks sleek and\u00a0sophisticated next to the white-streaked leaves of the variegated coralbells. They’re all as beautiful in\u00a0my garden as they are tasty in our salads.<\/p>\n

Hyacinth or herb?<\/p><\/div>\n

Didn’t a poet\u00a0write something about\u00a0how\u00a0if you have only two loaves of bread left, you should sell one and\u00a0buy hyacinths to feed your soul?\u00a0 I think the poet was hinting at how the whole person needs to be nourished — both body and soul.<\/p>\n

The office building where I work has a spot outside the parking garage with\u00a0a few tables and chairs\u00a0where people\u00a0enjoy their lunch outside.\u00a0 A pair\u00a0of big planters make the concrete patio a little friendlier, especially since the\u00a0management puts some care into their seasonal plantings. \u00a0A couple of summers ago, the planters were overflowing with\u00a0colorful foliage\u00a0— and a closer look revealed that this riot of color and texture came from a variety of lettuces and other leafy vegetables. I thought that was a terrific idea, but one of my colleagues was appalled.\u00a0Edible plants as ornamentals?\u00a0What a waste, he\u00a0growled;\u00a0it’s a crime.<\/p>\n

Last summer, the Hunger Leaders’ Gathering in Florida visited an organic hydroponic farm in Florida, and I saw more planters overflowing with gorgeous foliage. (The county extension agent complimented the farmer on his\u00a0lovely\u00a0ruffly red leaf lettuce, and he\u00a0answered, “Thank you. I come out and curl them myself every morning.”) They really were spectacular — lettuces, bell peppers, tomatoes, strawberries — all kinds of\u00a0beautiful\u00a0and fragrant plants cascading out of\u00a0their tiers of planters.<\/p>\n

A backyard gardener who admires the beauty of\u00a0her herbs and then puts them in her salads. A\u00a0building manager who\u00a0made a patio more\u00a0pleasant with planters filled with leafy vegetables instead of flowers.\u00a0An organic farmer whose fragrant and well-tended crops glow with color and texture.<\/p>\n
