This year\u2019s theme is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwater.org\/worldwaterday\/index.html\">\u201cWater and Food Security.\u201d<\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwater.org\/\">United Nations (UN) Water<\/a>, there are 7 billion people to feed on the planet today and another 2 billion are expected to join by 2050.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unwater.org\/worldwaterday\/images\/cloud2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"111\" \/><\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Each of us drinks about half to one gallon of water per day&#8211; however most of the water we \u2018drink\u2019 is embedded in the food we eat. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3963 gallons water= produces 2.2 lbs. of beef<\/li>\n<li>396 gallons water= produces 2.2 lbs wheat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again according to UN Water, \u201cWhen a billion people in the world already live in chronic hunger and water resources are under pressure we cannot pretend the problem is \u2018elsewhere\u2019. <strong>Coping with population growth and ensuring access to nutritious food to everyone call for a series of actions we can all help with:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>follow a healthier, sustainable diet;<\/li>\n<li>consume less water-intensive products;<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>reduce the scandalous food wastage: 30% of the food produced worldwide is never eaten and the water used to produce it is definitively lost!<\/li>\n<li>produce more food, of better quality, with less water.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, how much water are you using? To find out, try the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onedrop.org\/calcul\/en\/\">UN Water \u201cOne Drop\u201d plate activity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On my plate, I put the foods I ate this morning and will eat for lunch: one bagel, cheese, two lettuces, a tomato and grapes. <strong>134 gallons* of water were used toward those two meals alone<\/strong> (not counting the coffee on my desk, two glasses of water, one glass of juice, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterfootprint.org\/?page=cal\/WaterFootprintCalculator\">\u201cWater Footprint?\u201d<\/a>\u2014the amount of water required to produce the goods and services you consume. The calculations are based on the water requirements per unit of product as in your country of residence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/hungerrumblings\/2012\/03\/olympic-swimming-pool-in-beijing-china.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2662\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/hungerrumblings\/2012\/03\/olympic-swimming-pool-in-beijing-china-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>My water footprint: 76,738 ft\u00b3 per year.<strong>** <\/strong>As a point of reference, an Olympic size swimming pool is 88,000 ft\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterfootprint.org\/?page=cal\/waterfootprintcalculator_national\">average American\u2019s water footprint<\/a> is 100,364 ft\u00b3<\/strong>. This takes into account the total amount of fresh water that is used to produce the goods and services consumed by the inhabitants of the nation. It includes two components: the part of the footprint that falls inside the country (internal water footprint) <em>and<\/em> the part of the footprint that presses on other countries in the world (external water footprint). Wow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwater.org\/worldwaterday\/index.html\">UN Water<\/a> reminds us that, \u201cAt all steps of the supply chain, from producers to consumers, actions can be taken to save water and ensure food for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get started now:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Learn about your water usage.
