{"id":2487,"date":"2012-02-23T12:58:18","date_gmt":"2012-02-23T17:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/hungerrumblings\/?p=2487"},"modified":"2012-02-23T12:58:18","modified_gmt":"2012-02-23T17:58:18","slug":"re-membering-at-the-table","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/worldhunger\/re-membering-at-the-table\/","title":{"rendered":"Re-membering at the Table"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently read Cynthia Moe-Lobeda\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/store.augsburgfortress.org\/store\/product\/2382\/Healing-a-Broken-World-Globalization-and-God?notFound=true\"><em>Healing a Broken World: Globalization and God<\/em> <\/a>in which she discusses a new way to think about the Eucharist. Each week before we share the sacrament, the minister reminds us of the story of the Last Supper and Jesus\u2019 command to \u201cdo this for the remembrance of me.\u201d All too often we hear the words but don\u2019t really think about what they mean; the ritual becomes a routine and we listen to the story and take the bread and wine out of habit but not necessarily with thoughtful purpose.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2489\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/hungerrumblings\/2012\/02\/MOE.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Moe-Lobeda offers a different way to understand the Eucharist. She challenges us to reconsider the word \u201cremember.\u201d Instead of taking the word to mean recall or recollect, she breaks the word into two parts \u201cre\u201d and \u201cmember\u201d and presents a new way to participate in and think about Communion. In recollecting the story of the Last Supper, we re-member, that is put together again, the body of Christ. We essentially are making fractured relationships and the broken body of Christ whole again through the re-membering in the Eucharist.<\/p>\n<p>In re-imagining what this holy meal means for us, what would happen if we did not try to build relationships and support for church members who are living without food or water? I think it is difficult to truly remember the Last Supper and re-member Christ\u2019s body without thinking about our local neighbors as well as our global neighbors who are hungry.
