revisited"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/hungerrumblings\/2011\/02\/Crumpled-dollar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1951\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/hungerrumblings\/2011\/02\/Crumpled-dollar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a>In a recent JTerm course at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ltsg.edu\/\">Gettysburg Seminary<\/a> I had the joy of revisiting one of my favorite ancient Christian texts, the Didache (also known as &#8220;The Teaching of the 12 Apostles&#8221;; the full text is available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earlychristianwritings.com\/text\/didache-lightfoot.html\">here<\/a>). \u00a0The text is an early Christian baptismal catechism that explains to those who are about to be baptized the commitment they are making when they agree to be baptized. \u00a0Now granted, some people may be a little frightened by the strong emphasis in the document about &#8220;works,&#8221; but the point the Didachist is making is worth exploring further: our baptismal covenant will impact how we live our daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>What is striking to me in the Didache is how often the text speaks of the commitment to those who are poor (see, e.g., 1.5-6, 3.5-8, 5.2b). \u00a0My favorite text (which I explored <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/hungerrumblings\/post\/soggy-dollars-14112008\/\">in this entry<\/a> shortly after joining \u00a0ELCA World Hunger) tells the catechumen to &#8220;Let your gift sweat in your hands until you know to whom to give it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the earlier post I pointed out that the Didachist ultimately assumes that the gift will in fact be given (<a href=\"https:\/\/community.elca.org\/netcommunity\/page.aspx?pid=473\">so give!<\/a>). \u00a0My recent thinking was directed to the command to <strong>know<\/strong> the person to whom you give (for the Greco-philes, the word used here is <em>ginosko<\/em>, the word that implies relationship). \u00a0Too often we are content to give money without getting to know the people to whom we give. \u00a0In my own life I know that too often I have been \u00a0happy to throw money at a problem (and I am <strong>not <\/strong>discouraging this, money is part of the solution) but \u00a0wary about really engaging the lives of those who are poor. \u00a0This ancient text challenges me to invest even more deeply in the lives of those who are poor and marginalized. \u00a0What have you done lately to better know those to whom you give? \u00a0What tips can you give us? \u00a0Leave a comment!<\/p>\n<p>David Creech<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent JTerm course at Gettysburg Seminary I had the joy of revisiting one of my favorite ancient Christian texts, the Didache (also known as &#8220;The Teaching of the 12 Apostles&#8221;;
