{"id":1774,"date":"2010-11-30T06:00:05","date_gmt":"2010-11-30T11:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/hungerrumblings\/?p=1774"},"modified":"2010-11-30T06:00:05","modified_gmt":"2010-11-30T11:00:05","slug":"world-aids-day-the-lazarus-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/worldhunger\/world-aids-day-the-lazarus-effect\/","title":{"rendered":"World AIDS Day: The Lazarus Effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/hungerrumblings\/2010\/11\/Stop-AIDS-Hand.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1775\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/hungerrumblings\/2010\/11\/Stop-AIDS-Hand.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Tomorrow is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldaidsday.org\/\">22nd World AIDS Day<\/a>, a day to raise awareness and fight the stigma of HIV and AIDS (see also the very informative <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aids.gov\/awareness-days\/\">aids.gov<\/a> Web page). \u00a0As I have written <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/hungerrumblings\/post\/world-aids-day-2-02122009\/\">earlier<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>AIDS and hunger are closely intertwined.\u00a0 AIDS is rapidly spreading in the most impoverished areas of the world\u2014places where education, women\u2019s and children\u2019s rights, and peace are hard to come by.\u00a0 Many areas, especially Sub-Saharan Africa, are trapped in a vicious cycle in which the symptoms of poverty facilitate the spread of the disease while the lives and productivity lost to the pandemic further impoverish vulnerable communities.\u00a0 Moreover, AIDS is especially devastating to hungry persons.\u00a0 Malnourished persons cannot take anti-retroviral drugs\u2014an empty stomach cannot handle the powerful medicine.\u00a0 In the absence of drugs and adequate nutrition, HIV develops into AIDS more quickly.\u00a0 Once a person has AIDS, more food is needed to fight the illness and counteract weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>On the flip side, when someone is given the food and drugs\u00a0that are essential to effectively addressing the disease the results are miraculous.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This year, take some time to watch the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l16YH6xCN4c\">Lazarus Effect<\/a> and learn more about HIV and AIDS and the amazing transformations that can happen if someone is simply given access to life saving drugs (drugs that cost less 40 cents a day!). \u00a0 After watching, do something about it: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Faith-In-Action\/Justice\/Poverty-Ministries\/HIV-and-AIDS.aspx\">learn more<\/a>, share the film with a friend, <a href=\"https:\/\/community.elca.org\/netcommunity\/page.aspx?pid=475\">give<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>David Creech<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tomorrow is the 22nd World AIDS Day, a day to raise awareness and fight the stigma of HIV and AIDS (see also the very informative aids.gov Web page). \u00a0As I have written earlier, AIDS and hunger are closely intertwined.\u00a0 AIDS is rapidly spreading in the most impoverished areas of the world\u2014places where education, women\u2019s and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[89,96],"class_list":["post-1774","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-post","tag-aids","tag-raising-of-lazarus"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.4 -
