Do you know why they chose to be vacicanted.<\/li>\n<li>When did you get vaccinated?<\/li>\n<li>Do you know how many lives the COVID-19 vaccines saved?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Faith and Vaccines<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>The vaccines for COVID came out rapidly, which helped curb the worst of the threat and saved lives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The more people got the vaccine the less the threat of this virus, to both themselves and others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/10\/iStock-1219398943.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10014 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/10\/iStock-1219398943-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/10\/iStock-1219398943-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/10\/iStock-1219398943-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/10\/iStock-1219398943-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/10\/iStock-1219398943-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/10\/iStock-1219398943-2048x1363.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/10\/iStock-1219398943-250x166.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/10\/iStock-1219398943-526x350.jpg 526w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When the vaccine came out, it was first offered to the most vulnerable in our society, the elderly.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then to the first responders who would be out fighting to save lives every day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Next<\/span>\u00a0to those just a little younger who were also vulnerable.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Finally, <\/span>we were all encouraged to get vaccinated, so that each of us could do our part to help protect everyone else around us\u2014our loved ones, strangers on the train, and all of God\u2019s children.<\/p>\n<p>Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their research on mRNA, which led to the creation of the Modera and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines. \u201cThese laureates contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times.\u201d (Nobel Assembly)<\/p>\n<p>They worked for decades without much support for their research and their findings were finally published in 2005.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many institutions didn\u2019t see any relevance to their research or think it would ever amount to anything.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And because of this, it was hard for them to find funding and support for their research.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then a global pandemic meant we needed their help.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their research and findings on using mRNA to make vaccines in record time saved millions of lives. Often when Jesus tells a parable, he uses dramatic exaggeration, so that the point is not lost on the audience. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0In today&#8217;s text a<\/span>\u00a0King throws a great feast and sends out the invitations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But who responds? Not the church leaders. \u00a0In a shocking display of contempt for the king they reject the invitation with lame excuses.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Those who respond and attend are those considered unworthy by those same church leaders. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What does it mean to respond to this call? Jesus offers us another dramatic image, a missing wedding garment, \u00a0because discipleship is more than just showing up.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The person who has no wedding garment is not ready to fully enter into the celebration. The image of the garment is not about clothes, it&#8217;s about what we do with our invitation. Jesus calls us to share the good news, to go out in service to the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lonely, and lost.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We are saved by grace through faith in the gift of salvation given to us by Jesus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And as Lutherans, we say that our job is to live in response to this gift. You have been called to the banquet, rejoice!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But it isn\u2019t enough just to be called. How we respond to this gift in our actions shows what it means for us to be guests at the heavenly banquet.<\/p>\n<p>A quotation often attributed to St. Francis of Assisi is, \u201cPreach the gospel (the good news) at all times and only when necessary use words.\u201d \u00a0While scholars say there is no \u00a0evidence that Francis actually spoke these words, their meaning still holds. \u00a0It&#8217;s undeniable that that our lives makes our words more believable. \u00a0And actions do indeed often speak louder than words.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>How do we respond to God\u2019s call?<\/li>\n<li>What are ways that we share the good news of Christ with others?<\/li>\n<li>What does it mean to put our faith into action?<\/li>\n<li>What do these words by St. Francis mean to you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Activity Suggestion<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Brainstorm ways that we can use science to help our neighbors and our world. Write these ideas out on band-aids and stick them to a picture of a broken globe (or get an actual broken globe and repair it with the band-aids). \u00a0Some say that individual actions are indeed just small band-aids on the great problems of our day (global ecological collapse, hunger many, war of all types). \u00a0Discuss how the way of Jesus might address the underlying causes of suffering.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>God of grace and mercy, thank you for the gift of science, scientists, and the ability to save lives through their work.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thank you for helping us to share the good news of your love and serve our neighbors through scientists like Kati and Drew.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Please be with those who still need healing and care. \u00a0Help us to be your hands and feet of love.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Amen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A.
