Boundaries<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Taylor Swift and The National have both been very influential musical artists.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But they have typically appealed to very different audiences.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Swift is the epitome of a pop star, mining her personal struggles for inspiration and pairing them with catchy tunes which have stadiums of adoring fans singing along. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/05\/iStock-483801789.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9856 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/05\/iStock-483801789-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" has been the poster child for an indie-rock band, more at home in a grungy after hours club than an arena.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If Swift\u2019s lyrics often sound like a teen\u2019s diary, The National\u2019s are brooding and obscure to the the point of incomprehensible.<\/p>\n<p>So, according to a recent article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2023\/05\/taylor-swift-the-national-collaboration-folklore-evermore\/673491\/\">The Atlantic<\/a>, it is mildly surprising that Swift and The National have collaborated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>According to the review, both benefited from the interaction.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Swift\u2019s new albums, <i>Folklore <\/i>and <i>Evermore, <\/i>feature moodier arrangements and show her \u201cavailing herself of the freedoms and imperatives, that men in rock and roll have long enjoyed\u2014and projecting more ambiguity rather than wholesomeness and virtue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From Swift, The National seems to have learned to be less morose and abstract.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIn <i>First Two Pages of Frankenstein <\/i>the songwriting is tighter and often brighter, and Beringer\u2019s [The National\u2019s lead singer] meanings are remarkably direct.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Music fans are the big winners when stars push their comfort zones and learn from one another.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>How do you react when your favorite musical artist tries something new?<\/li>\n<li>In previous generations radio stations would play a \u201cTop 40\u201d format, which included many different styles of music.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You might hear country, rock, soul, and a show tune in the same half hour.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Today most people create a play list of their favorites or listen to a curated list on a streaming service.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What are the benefits and costs of each experience?<\/li>\n<li>Think about a time you have collaborated with someone else?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How were you changed?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How was the product on which you collaborated better or worse?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Day of Pentecost<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=549453050\">Acts 2:1-21<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=549453084\">1 You can find the calendar of readings for Year A at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearA\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to say exactly what happened that first Pentecost.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A sound from heaven like a rushing wind, tongues of fire resting on the disciples\u2014this is clearly figurative language which Luke uses to communicate an experience he can not really explain.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, somehow God comes to the disciples in a way they can not deny, transforming them from a scared cadre of confused believers into people compelled to tell what Jesus taught and did.<\/p>\n<p>Nor is it clear how Galileans are suddenly able to speak languages they have never studied.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some scholars suggest that Luke (the writer of Acts) misunderstood what happened, that this is an example of glossolalia, the \u201cspeaking in tongues\u201d we usually associate with Pentecostal worship.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But that is not what the text describes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is not people speaking gibberish, which others interpret.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rather, people from across the empire hear their own languages spoken.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is like a person born and bred in rural Iowa or Virginia suddenly preaching in flawless Mandarin or Kiswahili.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Through we can not say exactly what happened, it is easier to see what it means.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There was no way the gospel message was going to stay confined within a tightly cloistered community around Jerusalem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The rest of Acts shows the expansion of the Church\u2019s ministry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Peter goes to a Gentile centurion, Cornelius.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Paul travels through Greece, Asia Minor, and ultimately to Rome.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Pentecost serves notices that God intends for the way of Jesus to transcend the boundaries of culture, language, and religion.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is a message for all people.<\/p>\n<p>During the Church\u2019s history that intention has often been frustrated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Unfortunately, Christians easily <\/span>misidentify their own culture as the one true expression of the gospel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When that happens the Church\u2019s confession is neither good nor news; it becomes just another defense of the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>The Church is most faithful when it reaches beyond its comfort zone and hears and welcomes challenging voices.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is most effective when it finds new ways to address the hurts and struggles which we all share.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just as a lake needs a regular infusion of fresh water, so the church needs new voices. \u00a0Both grow stagnant without a renewing flow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Unfamiliar, even disconcerting, voices are the lifeblood of the Church, keeping it in touch with the world for which Christ died.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are God\u2019s gift, pushing us to see how Pentecost was not a one-and-done phenomenon, but the template for how a Spirit led community looks when Christ is alive in it.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>What new voice has challenged you in the last week to think or act in a different way?<\/li>\n<li>What are your favorite hymns; do any of them come out of a culture different from your own?<\/li>\n<li>The Church is often accused of being out of touch with the world.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Do you think that is true?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What could it do to more effectively speak to<strong> your<\/strong> questions and concerns?<\/li>\n<li>A hallmark of the Pentecost narrative is that \u201ceach heard in his own native language.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What new \u201clanguages\u201d does the church need to master in order to proclaim Christ more effectively?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For example, how well do we speak \u201cscience?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><i>Evangelical Lutheran Worship <\/i>and many other hymnals \u00a0contain music from a variety of \u00a0nations and cultures.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Still, m<\/span>ost of the hymns in <i>ELW<\/i> come out of Europe or North American.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Get an <em>ELW<\/em> or other hymnal and seek out hymns from Africa, Latin America, and Asia. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><\/i>How are they different, both musically and in their theological emphasis, from those written in Europe or the United States?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How are they similar?<\/li>\n<li><i><\/i>How do they enrich the worship life of congregations which use them?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What would be lost if they were not part of the worship resource Lutherans share?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Surprising God, just as you came to the disciples in an unexpected way at Pentecost, come also to us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Shake us out of complacency.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Makes us alive to the gifts which those who seem very different from us may offer to enrich our lives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Give us wisdom to hold on to what is timeless, your unfailing love. \u00a0But also make us eager to embrace bold, creative ways to speak and live that love in our hurting world.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bill King, Blacksburg, VA Warm-up Question Make a mental playlist of your five favorite pieces of music?\u00a0 How many musical genres are represented?\u00a0 Is it all K-pop, metal, classical, rap, jazz, indie?\u00a0 Do you have a mix?\u00a0 What do your choices say about you?
