{"id":983,"date":"2009-12-29T09:48:24","date_gmt":"2009-12-29T14:48:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=983"},"modified":"2010-01-07T11:08:34","modified_gmt":"2010-01-07T16:08:34","slug":"december-30-january-6-miracle-after-mother-assaulted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/december-30-january-6-miracle-after-mother-assaulted\/","title":{"rendered":"December 30-January 6, Miracle After Mother Assaulted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Erik Ullestad, West Des Moines, IA<\/p>\n<h3>Warmup Question<\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0Have you ever witnessed a miracle?\u00a0 What happened?<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Miracle Born After Mother Assaulted<\/h3>\n<p>The temperatures are getting colder, snow is piling up, and homeless shelters are filled to capacity.\u00a0 Such is the scene in cities the world over.\u00a0 Washington D.C. is no different, claiming record snowfalls and near all-time highs in unemployment.\u00a0 Teka Adams is one of the thousands of pregnant women who rest their heads in a homeless shelter.\u00a0 She is in her third trimester, only a few weeks away from delivering her first child.\u00a0 It is a time of excitement, fear, and wonder.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1044\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"women and child\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2009\/12\/women-and-child2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"women and child\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2009\/12\/women-and-child2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2009\/12\/women-and-child2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2009\/12\/women-and-child2.jpg 606w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>\u00a0This was the scene a few weeks ago, until Teka met Veronica at the shelter.\u00a0 Veronica was moving into her own apartment soon.\u00a0 She invited Teka to help her move, in exchange for food and baby clothes.\u00a0 Teka agreed, her hope renewed by the chance to provide for her unborn child.\u00a0 When they arrived at the apartment, things took a turn for the worst.\u00a0\u00a0Veronica locked the door and tied Teka\u2019s hands behind her back.\u00a0 She came at Teka with a knife, saying, \u201cYou&#8217;re strong, you can handle what I&#8217;m going to do to you.\u201d\u00a0 Veronica then cut into Teka\u2019s abdomen in an attempt to remove the baby.\u00a0 A few months earlier, Veronica had lied to her friends and family, telling them that she was pregnant.\u00a0 She was trying to remove Teka\u2019s baby and take it as her own.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Before Veronica was able to remove the baby, Teka was able to escape.\u00a0 Neighbors found her bleeding in a nearby parking lot.\u00a0 Teka was taken to a hospital where doctors were able to heal her wounds and save the baby.\u00a0 Both are expected to make a full recovery.\u00a0 The baby \u2013 a girl \u2013 was named Miracle.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0\u00a0DISCUSSION QUESTIONS<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you know about the homeless population in your community?<\/li>\n<li>Why do you think someone would fake a pregnancy and try to steal someone else\u2019s baby?<\/li>\n<li>If you were related to Veronica, how would you respond to her?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scripture Texts (NRSV) for Sunday, January 3, 2010\u00a0(Second Sunday of Christmas)<\/h3>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Growing-In-Faith\/Worship\/Lectionary.aspx\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=128497753 \">Jeremiah 31:7-14<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=128497836 \">Ephesians\u00a0 1:3-14<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=128497893 \">John 1:[1-9] 10-18<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>GOSPEL REFLECTION<\/h3>\n<p>Today is the second Sunday of Christmas, but the gospel lesson is not a traditional Christmas story.\u00a0 There are no tales of shepherds, angels, mangers, or innkeepers.\u00a0 Instead, John talks about the Word, which we often assume to represent Jesus.\u00a0 He traces the Word back to the creation of the world.\u00a0 He even uses the same phrase as Genesis 1:1 \u2013 \u201cIn the beginning\u2026\u201d \u2013 to indicate that there is a connection between what God created in Genesis and what God created in the birth of Jesus.\u00a0 The Word was with God, the Word was God, and the word became flesh in the person of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0In addition to \u201cthe Word\u201d John mentions two other important things in the opening chapter of his gospel.\u00a0 The first is John the Baptist.\u00a0 John the gospel writer and John the Baptist were two different people.\u00a0 The author was \u201cthe beloved disciple\u201d, a brother of James and the son of Zebedee.\u00a0 John the Baptist was the one who pointed the way to Jesus and was eventually beheaded for his blasphemy.\u00a0 When Jesus was around, there were many people who thought that John the Baptist was the messiah (or \u201cthe Word\u201d).\u00a0 John the writer wants to make sure that readers know that John the Baptist was an important person, but was not the one.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0John also talks about Jesus\u2019 purpose on earth.\u00a0 On one hand, Jesus will be rejected by the very people he came to save.\u00a0 On the other hand, he brings \u201cgrace upon grace\u201d, truth, and the power to become children of God.\u00a0 Jesus comes with good news, but not everyone will be ready to receive it.\u00a0 He will be tested, questioned, beaten, and even put to death.\u00a0 He comes to teach, to inspire, and, ultimately, to sacrifice his life so that we might live.\u00a0 What a miracle that God loves us this much!<\/p>\n<h3>DISCUSSION QUESTIONS<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the importance of making a connection between God creating the world and God sending Jesus into the world?<\/li>\n<li>Why do you think John chose to refer to Jesus as \u201cthe Word\u201d instead of just calling him by name?<\/li>\n<li>Would you describe Jesus\u2019 coming into the world as a \u201cmiracle\u201d?\u00a0 Why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>How does the miracle of Jesus\u2019 arrival on earth inspire you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>ACTIVITY SUGGESTION<\/h3>\n<p>Gather colorful paper, markers, glitter, and other decorative items.\u00a0 Create greeting cards for new mothers in your community.\u00a0 These could be for women in your neighborhood, church, workplace, or a women\u2019s homeless shelter.\u00a0 Look for some verses in Scripture that would give hope to someone who had given birth.\u00a0 (Consider portions of today\u2019s gospel or the Advent and Christmas stories in Matthew or Luke.)\u00a0 Talk as a group about how you plan to deliver these cards during the week.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>CLOSING PRAYER<\/h3>\n<p>God, thank you for the miracle of Jesus\u2019 birth.\u00a0 We praise you for loving us so much that you forgive our sins and give us the promise of eternal life.\u00a0 Help us to give hope to those who have none.\u00a0 Give us the inspiration that comes in the form of a baby, born in a feeding trough, who brings light and life to the world.\u00a0 Amen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by Erik Ullestad, West Des Moines, IA Warmup Question \u00a0Have you ever witnessed a miracle?\u00a0 What happened? \u00a0Miracle Born After Mother Assaulted The temperatures are getting colder, snow is piling up, and homeless shelters are filled to capacity.\u00a0 Such is the scene in cities the world over.\u00a0 Washington D.C. is no different, claiming record [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1400],"tags":[1385,194,379,394,553,1384,510,1382,1383],"class_list":["post-983","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-post","tag-baby","tag-christmas","tag-compassion","tag-gods-love","tag-homeless","tag-incarnation","tag-miracle","tag-mother","tag-pregnant"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.4 -
