While no one\u2019s lives and identities should be used for political fodder, we many shape these conversations around demonizing trans folks, and more specifically weaponizing what God thinks about the diversity God has created.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/04\/iStock-1226111101.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9802 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/04\/iStock-1226111101-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/04\/iStock-1226111101-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/04\/iStock-1226111101-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/04\/iStock-1226111101-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/04\/iStock-1226111101-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/04\/iStock-1226111101-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/04\/iStock-1226111101.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>CNN reports that transgender young adults are 40% more likely than their cisgender counterparts to contemplate suicide. The attack on the rights of trans individuals, mainly youth and young adults, is fueled by bias and misinformation. <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/publications\/bans-trans-youth-health-care\/\">Many states have introduced bills<\/a> to restrict gender-affirming medical care for youth. These laws and social commentary have real life affects for our siblings. We know what we can do to counteract this. We can believe people when they tell us who they are, standing together to make sure that all of God\u2019s people receive the \u00a0the support, encouragement and hope they need to thrive. As Christians we can affirm that God knows us fully and wishes peace for \u00a0all God\u2019s children.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Can you list some of the \u201cGod created diversity\u201d you see in your day to day life?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>When have you been scared? His closest friends and followers huddle together, deep in fear that they might be next. Their closest friend, their teacher has been executed by the state and their entire lives flipped upside down. The women, the first at the scene, have heard the good news that the Lord has been raised.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>While the men wait, Jesus begins his post-resurrection tour. Although the doors to the room are locked he appears among them and breathes a word of peace. He forgives them for fleeing and remaining silent\u2014reminding them of their belovedness.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One disciple was missing from this \u201cbeyond the grave\u201d visit \u2013 Thomas. Having heard from his brothers in Christ that the Lord is alive and has visited, Thomas remarks in disbelief. There is no way this has happened!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He cannot fathom this reality without seeing and touching the places where the Lord was wounded.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Wouldn\u2019t you guess it, a week later Jesus returns, and this time Thomas is there. He places his fingers in the wounds and his hand in Christ\u2019 side. He suspends his doubt and begins to believe. \u201cBecause you have seen me, you have believed;\u00a0blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed\u201d It is this believing which grants us eternal life in Christ Jesus.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>If someone showed up saying they were Jesus, how would you know if they were telling the truth?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>How you think Jesus\u2019 breath of peace soothed the disciples? \u00a0Was his mere presence their balm?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>How do you embody your belief in the risen christ?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>On a sheet of paper and using your 5 senses, draw what peace looks, feels, tastes, sounds, and smells like to you?<\/li>\n<li>Listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NSNevGcz8ec\">Presiding Bishop Eaton&#8217;s video message<\/a> about our commitment to our transgender siblings and an affirmation about God\u2019s love for all who God has created.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Find a comfy spot, close your eyes, breath deep and listen to rain sounds. Reflect on the places of stress in your lives \u2013 exhale tension and inhale peace<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>God who once was dead but lives again. We ask you to revive us from our apathy. Breathe new life into our world, that all your people might have what they need. Make us representatives of your love, your grace, and your mercy. May we continue to believe God\u2019s people when they tell us who they are.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>May we see you reflected in the eyes of one another.
