Is your community safe? If so, whose actions contribute to your community being safe? If not, whose actions contribute to the lack of safety?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Do you think your community is safer for some people than for others? If so, who is more safe and who is less safe? If you think everyone is equally safe (or equally unsafe), what do you think has contributed to that uniform experience?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>With Honor and Gentleness<\/b><\/h4>\n<div>\n<p>Just before midnight on November 19, 2022, a gunman entered Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub in\u00a0Colorado Springs, Colorado, and opened fire. Five people died and at least 18 were injured. \u00a0The incident could have been even worse, but two people at the club confronted the gunman,\u00a0took one of his weapons, and subdued him.<\/p>\n<p>As a queer person who began coming out \u00a0just before the 2016 mass shooting at Pulse, an\u00a0LGBTQ nightclub in Florida, I am inspired by the bravery of the people at Club Q who confronted the gunman and almost\u00a0certainly saved lives in the process. They embody one of the chants that I&#8217;ve heard at many\u00a0of the protests I have attended in the past two and a half years: \u201cWe keep us safe.\u201d In a country\u00a0where many from marginalized communities have justifiable doubts about whether police\u00a0will help us or harm us, we often find ourselves in situations where we need to defend ourselves\u00a0without relying on outside help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Yet we should not be put in dangerous situations, certainly not with the current degree of frequency. A world full of heroism is not the goal;\u00a0\u00a0a world where brave club-goers kept the death toll down to\u00a0five is still a world where five people died due to senseless violence. We should strive\u00a0for a world where extraordinary heroism is unnecessary because no one is driven by hatred to\u00a0commit senseless acts of violence in the first place\u2014and a world where it is much harder to\u00a0obtain the instruments of death involved in such acts.<\/div>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Are there events, either in your personal life (such as bullying) or in our shared experience (such as news of school shootings), that have permanently changed your sense of safety in your everyday life?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>What is a time when you have acted bravely? In <i>Much Ado about Nothing<\/i>, \u00a0Claudio thinks the woman he is engaged to, Hero, is cheating on him. In reality, Hero is not cheating; the whole thing is an illusion set up by the villain. However, when Claudio gets to the altar on the wedding day, he accuses Hero of infidelity in front of everyone and refuses\u00a0to listen to her protestations of innocence.<\/p>\n<p>One of my male classmates defended Claudio\u2019s behavior, saying it was just what any guy would do if he thought his fiancee was cheating on him. My professor replied that he thought there were other ways Claudio could have responded. \u201cI know an even older story than this,\u201d my professor said, \u201cfrom another very patriarchal culture. The guy in this story didn\u2019t just <i>suspect<\/i> that he was being cheated on\u2014his fiancee was pregnant, and he knew the baby wasn\u2019t his. But he didn\u2019t accuse her of cheating on him in front of their whole community; the story says that, \u2018unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, [he] planned to dismiss her quietly.\u2019\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In dealing with the early stages of Mary&#8217;s pregnancy Luke &#8216;s gospel focuses \u00a0on her visit to her relative Elizabeth. \u00a0That story offers us the incredible song of justice which she sings while she is there. \u00a0Mary&#8217;s courage and faithfulness inspire me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/iStock-1312969224.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9500 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/iStock-1312969224-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/iStock-1312969224-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/iStock-1312969224-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/iStock-1312969224-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/iStock-1312969224-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/iStock-1312969224-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/iStock-1312969224.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>But today I think it\u2019s worth thinking about Joseph. Joseph had no idea what he was getting into when he became engaged to Mary. \u00a0When Mary wound up pregnant, the only rational assumption he could make was that she had slept with someone else. But rather than seeking revenge by exposing her to public disgrace, he planned to break off the engagement quietly to preserve her reputation as best he could, without actually marrying her. Marrying her probably seemed off the table, not only because she appeared to have slept with someone else, but also because she seemed to have broken his trust. And then an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream to say that Mary had not slept with someone else or broken his trust, and that marrying her was exactly what he should do. \u00a0Joseph obeyed the angel and married her.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At every step in the process, Joseph behaved in a way that was gentle and honorable, not\u00a0judgmental or vengeful. \u00a0God calls us also\u00a0to act with honor and gentleness rather than in judgment and vengeance.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Has someone ever appeared to have broken your trust? How have you responded? Have you let them tell you their side of the story?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think revenge is ever justified? Where is the line between justice and revenge?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Do you think there are judgments we are in fact called to make, rather than called to avoid? How do you know the difference?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>In the story, an angel appears to Joseph in a dream. Share about unusual dreams that you\u2019ve had. Alternatively, share about ways that you feel God\u2019s guidance has come to you\u2014in dreams; in advice from friends, family members, or strangers; in times of reflection; or some other way.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Brainstorm ways that you, either individually or as a group, can make your community safer and\/or more welcoming. Commit to taking at least one action from your list in the next week. If time allows and the action is something you can start on now, get started!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Holy God, we ask forgiveness for times when we have been judgmental or vengeful, especially when our actions have affected the safety of others. We pray for a world where all are safe, and we ask for your fortification and guidance as we seek bravery to stand up for ourselves and others.
