{"id":8927,"date":"2022-02-01T07:45:25","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T12:45:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=8927"},"modified":"2022-01-31T22:21:49","modified_gmt":"2022-02-01T03:21:49","slug":"february-6-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/february-6-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"February 6, 2022&#8211;Fish Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Scott Mims, Norfolk, VA<\/b><\/p>\n<h4><b>Warm-up Question<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Have you ever been fishing?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If so, share one of your best \u201cfish stories.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If not, what is one activity you really enjoy doing and why do you enjoy it?<\/p>\n<h4><b>Fish Story<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>I was intrigued \u00a0by an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/for-the-third-time-this-year-a-menacing-fish-from-the-deep-sea-has-washed-ashore-californias-beaches-180979277\/\">article<\/a> about a rare deep-ocean creature which had washed up on a California beach.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As one who watched Disney\u2019s <i>Finding Nemo<\/i> a lot when my children were little, I recognized the pictures as being the type of deep sea \u201cmonster\u201d that is angling to turn Marlin and Dory into a meal.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What I didn\u2019t know was how rare a find such a specimen is.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/02\/iStock-1149600993.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8939 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/02\/iStock-1149600993-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/02\/iStock-1149600993-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/02\/iStock-1149600993-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/02\/iStock-1149600993-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/02\/iStock-1149600993-250x141.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/02\/iStock-1149600993-622x350.jpg 622w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/02\/iStock-1149600993.jpg 1365w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It turns out that, even though the Pacific football fish was first discovered over 100 years ago, only 31 specimens have ever been collected. Since they live at depths of up to 3,300 feet, Pacific football fish can\u2019t be studied in the wild. What makes this particular fish newsworthy is that it was the third one to wash ashore in a year. Prior to that, the last football fish to be found was twenty years ago. This is both exciting and a bit puzzling for ichthyologists, although no reason for this increased frequency can be determined with any certainty. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For me, this strange creature is a reminder of the wonder and mystery which continue to surround all of creation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How is it that creatures can live and thrive in places too deep for us to truly explore?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How might their abilities to adapt to less than favorable conditions challenge\u2026perhaps even inspire\u2026us in the face of a changing world?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As I write this, the James Webb Space Telescope has just reached its new home, and scientists are eager to discover what it will reveal about the universe.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, despite the marvels of technology which allow us to peer into the secrets of the stars, \u00a0there is still much to learn about our own planet.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>What about the world\/universe around us do you find interesting, \u201ccool,\u201d or amazing?<\/li>\n<li>Psalm 19 begins: \u201cThe heavens are telling the glory of God\u2026.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Where do you see God in the natural world?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How does Creation proclaim God\u2019s handiwork?<\/li>\n<li>When you think about the future of our planet, what concerns do you have?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What do you think should be done about the things that most concern you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Fifth Sunday after Epiphany<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=510043009\">Isaiah 6:1-8 [9-13]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=510043041\">1 Corinthians 15:1-11<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=510043076\">Luke 5:1-11<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearC\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>There are some moments when the Bible comes to life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One such moment for my wife occurred on a visit to Israel years when her tour group made a stop at the Sea of Galilee.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Casting off a bit from the shore in a small boat, their tour guide began to speak to them about the region.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He spoke at a normal volume but, due to the water and the shape of the land, his words came across very distinctly, almost as if he were being amplified. No wonder then that, when pressed upon by a large crowd, Jesus chose just such a setting to make himself heard.<\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s gospel is part miracle story and part call story.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus\u2019 ministry of preaching, teaching, and healing has been attracting a lot of attention.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Large crowds are showing up wherever he is, hoping to hear him, see him, maybe even be touched by him.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 On this<\/span>\u00a0occasion Jesus asks a fisherman named Simon (and probably some of his partners, too) to take him out a bit from the shore, so that he can proclaim the good news to the gathered crowd.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What did Jesus say that day?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What important teachings did he share?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Luke doesn\u2019t tell us because that is not the point of this story.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>His point is what Jesus does next.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus tells Simon and the others in the boat to put out into deeper water and to let down their nets.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Having just come off a hard night of fruitless labor, Simon at first hesitates \u2014 he \u201cknows\u201d there are no fish to be had.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, because it is Jesus who asks, they deploy their nets.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>And the rest, as we say, is history.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>First, they catch so many fish that Simon has to call for help to keep the nets from breaking and their boat from sinking.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And then, as the amazement and awe of this miraculous moment wash over him, Simon Peter drops to his knees in wonder and dread.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cGo away from me Lord,\u201d he cries, \u201cfor I am a sinful man!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Jesus doesn\u2019t go away.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead, despite their shortcomings, Jesus invites Simon and the others into a different kind of fishing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cDo not be afraid,\u201d he says, \u201cfrom now on you will be catching people.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, bringing their boats to shore, they leave everything and follow him.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, this miraculous call story is ultimately a story about faith. Not just the faith to follow, but the trust involved in obeying Jesus, even when we cannot at first see the reason or how things will turn out.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Here, Simon is the professional fisherman.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He knows what he is doing; it is not the right time of day to be fishing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What\u2019s more, he does not expect there to be any fish because they have already labored long without success.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nevertheless, at Jesus\u2019 word he does what he expects to be a waste of effort and time, and experiences, instead, amazing \u2013 even life-changing \u2014 success. As we think about the times in which we are living, what is it that Jesus is calling us to do?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What \u201cdeep waters\u201d is he inviting us into, and how are we to let down our \u201cnets\u201d?<\/p>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever had the experience of simply stepping out in faith?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If so, what happened?<\/li>\n<li>Jesus was not the only religious teacher who had disciples; other Jewish rabbis in his day also had followers \u2013 usually people who were among the brightest and best. Along with the miraculous catch of fish, one of the wonders in this story is who Jesus chooses.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What outward qualities (for example, a lack of formal education) might have made Simon and his companions such a surprising choice?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When it comes to those who follow him, what are some of the qualities you think Jesus cares most about?<\/li>\n<li>How do you feel about Simon Peter and his companions\u2019 response? As you imagine it, what things did they have to give up?
