{"id":8757,"date":"2021-11-16T08:03:31","date_gmt":"2021-11-16T13:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=8757"},"modified":"2021-11-15T10:21:46","modified_gmt":"2021-11-15T15:21:46","slug":"november-21-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/november-21-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"November 21, 2021&#8211;Signs of the Kingdom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Amy Martinell, Sioux Falls, SD<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Warm-up Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever been blamed for something you didn\u2019t do?\u00a0 How did you feel?\u00a0 How did you react?<\/li>\n<li>What news have you heard lately that made you feel good?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Signs of the Kingdom<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-tyne-59116997\">On Halloween night<\/a> in the UK three children stopped to trick or treat at the house of Brenda Burdon, 86.\u00a0 Brenda apologized because she did not have any treats ready to give out.\u00a0 The youth replied, &#8220;It&#8217;s OK, because sometimes making people happy and getting a nice big smile is reward enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They then decided they wanted to spread a little more happiness.\u00a0 They returned the next day with muffins and chocolates they had purchased for her, along with a ten pound note and a card which they had decorated with pumpkins and doodles that read, \u201c\u201cThank you for being so kind. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The kingdom of God is like\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Our reading today comes during Jesus\u2019 last hours before his death.\u00a0 Jesus has been handed over to the Pilate, the Roman governor, by Caiaphas, the Jewish high priest.\u00a0 They tell Pilate Jesus is a criminal whom they want put to death, but Pilate is not sure of what Jesus may be guilty. (John 18.29-31)\u00a0 So Pilate questions Jesus, asking if he is the \u201cKing of the Jews.\u201d This is a political rather than religious charge. Pilate does not care about the religious infighting, but he does care if there is a new political ruler rising to challenge Roman rule.\u00a0 In his typical fashion, Jesus does not provide a clear answer\u00a0to Pilate\u2019s question.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if he is King of the Jews, Jesus replies, \u201cMy kingdom is not from this world.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus has a kingdom, but it is not here on earth.\u00a0 The world has proved they are not ready for Jesus&#8217; kingdom of serving the lowly, forgiving sins, and loving your enemies.\u00a0 Because the world is not ready, Jesus is standing before Pilate facing death.\u00a0 Yet, this is not the end of the story.\u00a0 Jesus rose from the dead and promises to return with his kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s up to us, the followers of Christ, to wonder: What is this kingdom not of this world?\u00a0 What does Jesus\u2019 reign look like?\u00a0 How do we welcome Jesus\u2019 reign into our lives and our world?\u00a0 We live in waiting, waiting for Christ to return and for Christ\u2019s kingdom to come to earth.\u00a0 But as we wait, we see glimpses of Christ\u2019s kingdom right now.\u00a0 When we follow Christ by loving and serving others, we bring God\u2019s kingdom to others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-1141513696.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8779 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-1141513696-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-1141513696-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-1141513696-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-1141513696-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-1141513696-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-1141513696-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-1141513696.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have a friend who loves to share on her social media when she sees the kingdom of heaven break into our world.\u00a0 She posts \u201cthe kingdom of heaven is like\u2026\u201d and then shares stories of places she has seen Jesus\u2019 kingdom.\u00a0 These stories include a competitive runner who helps an opponent rather than going for the win, farmers who come together to harvest their neighbors\u2019 crops after tragedy, and a couple who spent their flight helping an anxious teenager cope with turbulence.<\/p>\n<p>So, when it came time to pick a current event for this Faith Lens, I didn\u2019t do what I usually do.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t look for a prominent news story that was on my mind.\u00a0 Instead, I looked for a story that would give us a glimpse of a kingdom not of this world.\u00a0 It took a bit longer to find this type of story, butI think this story of kids taking time out of their trick-or-treating to share some joy with a stranger gives us a great picture of what the kingdom of God looks like.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pilate questions Jesus to get closer to the truth of his arrest.\u00a0 Jesus proclaims \u201cI came into the world to testify to the truth.\u201d\u00a0 Are Jesus and Pilate talking about the same kind of truth.\u00a0 What truth does Jesus point to in your life?<\/li>\n<li>What do you imagine Jesus&#8217; kingdom is like?\u00a0 Share a time when you experienced Jesus\u2019 kingdom on earth?<\/li>\n<li>As Jesus\u2019 followers, how do we live in a way that helps others see the kingdom of God?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Divide into groups and search newspapers or news websites for stories that show us what the kingdom of God is like.\u00a0 Come back together and share the stories you have found.\u00a0 Discuss if it was\u00a0 easy or hard to find \u201cgood news\u201d stories.
