out of school for an extra week because of a virus making people ill all over the world?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How did you feel at that moment?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When did your feelings change about COVID-19?<\/p>\n<p><b>Birth Pains<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard not to discuss COVID-19 in just about every area of life these days.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, it seems to be a new conversation starter, just like, \u00a0\u201cHow about this weather?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 N<\/span>ow it\u2019s, \u201cHave you have COVID?\u201d or \u201cHave you had your shots?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cAre you getting the booster?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When COVID first became a thing, I remember thinking, \u201cWell here\u2019s another thing that people are going to go crazy about\u2026we just need to wash our hands and be careful, the way we were with swine flu.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 When<\/span>\u00a0school was cancelled, \u00a0my kids were super excited for the extra week of spring break.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then, school was cancelled for another week and people all over the world began reporting alarming numbers of sick and dead.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 F<\/span>inally came the point at which I knew it was serious\u2026the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was cancelled, quickly followed by Fiesta in San Antonio.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0T<\/span>he Houston Livestock show is a million, probably billion, dollar event.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So, at that point, I began to feel the birth pangs of what would be a long year and a half of labor, so to speak, that&#8217;s still not \u00a0over.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or maybe it is, and we just don\u2019t recognize what life looks like with something new?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-511525872.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8751 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-511525872-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-511525872-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/11\/iStock-511525872.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pain of childbirth is great, but it doesn\u2019t start out that way.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For people who give birth \u00a0without being induced, the pain starts slowly with larger cramping or contractions than usual.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You ask yourself, \u201cWas this different?\u201d The answer is, \u201cOh yes.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Though you are scared, you also rejoice because this little person inside of you, who has grown terribly uncomfortable, is finally coming out!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then, the contractions get closer together and eventually become much more painful.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Finally, the pain becomes unlike most other pains a person experiences\u2026unless they pass a kidney stone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s agony, \u00a0yet necessary for new birth.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to have my children naturally, without any pain relievers such as an epidural.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Some women have very good reasons for choosing these aids, but they were not for me. \u00a0<\/span>I took classes designed to help me work through the pain and thought I was ready.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But I wasn\u2019t.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The pain came and lasted longer than expected. \u00a0Those assisting the birth encouraged me to ease the pain, instead of helping me work through it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When you are in that much pain, it\u2019s hard to stay committed to what you wanted, so I chose the spinal block.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the end, the epidural caused many difficulties and I wished I&#8217;d chosen what I knew was best for me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With the second child I vowed I would deliver with no epidural, even though there were many voices telling me once again, \u201cIt\u2019s OK Heather, just get the epidural\u2026most people do\u2026you\u2019ll feel so much better.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But this time, I knew what I truly wanted. \u00a0Fortunately for me, I had a nurse with a strong steady voice who stayed with me through the pain.<\/p>\n<p>As with childbirth, the pains of COVID came subtly at first.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps they were even joyful, because we had some time of rest and recreation which we don\u2019t normally observe.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But then, the pain became worse. \u00a0Our lives started filling with disappointments, illnesses, deaths, depression, and anxiety. \u00a0We struggled with turmoil and division in our country and culture.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was easy to listen to voices that led us astray and to\u00a0think only of ourselves.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, the pain grew stronger, the longer the pandemic lasted.<\/p>\n<p>Are we finished with COVID-19 yet?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Has new birth finally come?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or are we still working through the pain, waiting for final delivery?<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What do you think?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Are we finished with You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When you \u00a0research Mark 13, you find that this chapter is sometimes referred to as \u201ca little apocalypse.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What starts out in verse 1 as exclamations from the disciples about the greatness of the temple, quickly turns into a chapter fraught with destruction, war, and admonitions from Jesus to be prepared and ready.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus declares that even this great temple will crumble completely to the ground.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 In 13:8<\/span>, Jesus tells the disciples that \u201cthis is but the beginning of the birth pangs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the questions I ask myself when I read the Bible is,\u201cWhat does this passage have to say to me about what\u2019s going on in the world right now?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Therefore, when I read this passage in Mark a few weeks ago, especially the words Jesus speaks about birth pangs, I immediately thought of COVID-19.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus spends all of Mark 13, after the disciples exclaim how great the temple is, describing something not so great after all.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The destruction of the temple, which is often seen as a sign of \u00a0Jesus&#8217; death, is only the birth pangs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus also warns the disciples to be ready for many voices which will lead them astray. \u00a0He describes the pain that they will encounter, perhaps trying to prepare them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, as I think about birth, COVID-19, and all the hard painful things that happen in life, can we ever be fully ready for how they feel?<\/p>\n<p>I wish I&#8217;d had \u00a0a voice to lead me through a natural delivery the first time I gave birth to a child.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wish we could have seen how much pain COVID would bring, and how much we needed a strong voice guiding us through the myriad of other, less helpful voices.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, I bet \u00a0the disciples wished they could hear the guiding voice of Jesus in person when they faced great persecution and trial after Jesus ascended into heaven.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it\u2019s hard to imagine how\u00a0pain and suffering will end in the same kind of joy and new birth that having a baby brings.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even though having a baby or getting a COVID shot seem to be an end to the pain, we may find we still don\u2019t understand and still have the pain.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When I first brought home my oldest child, I set her car seat down on the floor, looked at my husband and said, \u201cWhat are we supposed to do now?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>We may be unsure about what comes next. The good news is that Jesus prepares us if we listen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Later in chapter 13, Jesus says listen to my voice and don\u2019t be swayed by others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even when we are in great pain, the voice of Jesus is there, guiding us to new life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So, when the birth pangs come, be ready for the pain and dig into how Jesus prepares us, but also be ready to listen and learn.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus does bring new life.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do you feel when you hear Jesus say that everything will be destroyed?<\/li>\n<li>What things in your life have you felt were destroyed and brought pain?<\/li>\n<li>What helped you get through that pain to a new life?<\/li>\n<li>What does new life look like after something painful has happened?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Give some examples of new life born from hurt or pain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Watch a video of the Twin Towers in New York City collapsing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Discuss the destruction, death and pain that came from that event.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then discuss the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What new birth came out of 9\/11?<\/li>\n<li>Where do you think God was\/is in that tragedy?<\/li>\n<li>What do you think got people through the pain of 9\/11 and how can that help us today?<\/li>\n<li>What does \u201cnew life\u201d look like to you, from a faith point of view?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Holy God,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0w<\/span>e sometimes struggle to see pain until it is upon us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We see joy in the beginnings of birth pangs, but then realize the fullness pain once we are in the middle of it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Guide us in these times to hear your voice and to respond to your will, even though it\u2019s easy to go astray.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Continue to prepare us for the hard times as we read your witness in scripture and comfort us through it all.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Amen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heather Hansen, San Antonio, TX Warm-up Questions What were you doing in 2020 when you first heard you would be out of school for an extra week because of a virus making people ill all over the world?\u00a0 How did you feel at that moment?\u00a0 When did your feelings change about COVID-19?
