{"id":8570,"date":"2021-05-18T07:10:42","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T12:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=8570"},"modified":"2021-05-12T15:25:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-12T20:25:44","slug":"may-23-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/may-23-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"May 23, 2021&#8211;Old and New"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Chris Heavner, Clemson, SC<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Warm-up Question<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If a room is already full, how can more people get in?<\/li>\n<li>What do make of the saying, \u201cGood endings make possible great beginnings\u201d?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Old and New<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/05\/iStock-614030130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8582 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/05\/iStock-614030130-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/05\/iStock-614030130-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/05\/iStock-614030130-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/05\/iStock-614030130-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/05\/iStock-614030130-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/05\/iStock-614030130-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/05\/iStock-614030130.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My high school adopted a mascot many of us attending that school found to be insensitive, if not downright offensive.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In 1962, when the school was established, we had not yet learned to listen to the voices of those whose experiences did not match those of the loud and boisterous.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was difficult to speak of what we wanted to be and become, when we were continually reminded of the comfort the status quo brought most of our classmates. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While we all like the idea of something new and different, it is never easy to let go of what we know so well.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIf it ain\u2019t broke; don\u2019t fix it!\u201d expresses our reluctance to make way for what is yet to come.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t take long for us to fall into a comfortable routine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The 12th graders at our annual Synod Youth Retreat are celebrated in rituals which they strengthen by their participation as 10th and 11th graders.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How dare we make changes when it is THEIR year to be in a unique small group of their own!<\/p>\n<p>But nothing new can come when we hold the old too firmly.<\/p>\n<p>It is easy<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to recognize the things which others (you can read \u201cold people\u201d) need to release.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is not so easy to see what we have so firmly grasped that we do not have an open hand to receive what is about to pass us by.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Name one thing would you like to see come to an end?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This can be a practice, a behavior, an attitude, or even an expectation.<\/li>\n<li>Put yourself in the place of those holding on to this \u201cthing\u201d which you think needs to come to an end.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Do not move on till you have come to understand why \u201cthey\u201d would not want to see an end.<\/li>\n<li>With great pride, name those things in your life which have become so special to you that you know you would fight to keep them firmly in place!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Now, ask which of those others might not find as exciting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Day of Pentecost\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=487641730\">Acts 2:1-21<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=487641762\">Romans 8:22-27<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=487641797\">John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This reading is part of Jesus\u2019 farewell message to his disciples.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He is telling them both good-bye and what he expects of them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We read this passage on Pentecost Sunday because it is such a clear message from Jesus about the role and purpose of the Holy Spirit. (Here called \u201cthe Advocate,\u201d but also referred to as the \u201cSpirit of Truth, \u201cHoly Spirit,\u2019 or \u201cHoly Ghost.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>On Pentecost Sunday, there is a great commotion in Jerusalem as the presence of this Spirit becomes obvious in the lives of the disciples.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They begin to speak in strange tongues and they overwhelm folks with their announcement of God\u2019s salvation.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus says that this day can\u2019t come until the Advocate comes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And the Advocate can\u2019t come until Jesus is gone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus knew the disciples were not going to lean on the Advocate so long as they had Jesus to lean on.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So long as Jesus was with them, they did not need the Spirit to drive them out into the crowd to tell the Good News.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus was better at it than they, right?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But when Jesus isn\u2019t there, the Advocate is able to nudge them into action.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And they become the witnesses to the truth of what Jesus taught and shared.<\/p>\n<p>On Pentecost Sunday, we are each reminded of how powerfully the Advocate moves among us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We become those who turn loose of whatever it is that we were holding so tightly that we are unable to embrace the new thing God is doing in our midst.<\/p>\n<p>It is a difficult thing to let loose of that which we come to prefer and to trust.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But letting loose is essential to becoming the people God knows we have the capacity to be.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Talk about the great things the disciples were able to do.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(They give rise to the Church, which has members in every timezone around the earth!)<\/li>\n<li>Remember stories of how the disciples were moved by the Spirit to do God\u2019s work in the world. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Speak to one another about the modern-day disciples who have helped you see the workings of the Advocate.<\/li>\n<li>Return to the question above&#8211;what you have come to hold so firmly that you might not be able to receive the new thing(s) God wants to see happen in your life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Seek out one of the older members of your congregation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ask them to tell you about a practice or way of doing things which is no longer a part of the congregation\u2019s life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Allow them to remember the happiness this event brought them; then ask if something was able to take its place.<\/p>\n<p>Start by realizing that the Advocate is active in your life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Now &#8211; sit in stillness long enough to discover the thing you are being nudged to do.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe it is being kind to the classmate others ignore.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe it is speaking out against racism.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Spirit may be looking to you to be the one who shouts a reminder of how much God loves all the little children of the world.<\/p>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>O Lord, allow the Wind of Pentecost to blow though my life and into my world.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Make it possible for me to follow where you lead and to do the things which you desire.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Help me to avoid the comfortable niche; make me ever ready to take on the challenge of speaking your name and your promise.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Amen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chris Heavner, Clemson, SC Warm-up Question If a room is already full, how can more people get in?
