An article by Belinda Luscomb in TIME reports that, &#8220;a\u00a0postelection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2020\/12\/17\/voters-say-those-on-the-other-side-dont-get-them-heres-what-they-want-them-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> found that fewer than 2% of voters felt those who voted for the other party understood them very well, and only 13% of Joe Biden\u2019s voters and 5% of Donald Trump\u2019s voters expressed any desire for future unity. <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5931349\/trump-divided-families\/\">Luscomb&#8217;s article<\/a> chronicles several studies and personal stories to illustrate a larger social trend.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An October <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/0265407520967438\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> from the University of Missouri found that since 2016, family interactions have been more likely to drive highly partisan relatives apart than bring them together.&#8221; \u00a0Family members are blocking each other on social media over political opinions. \u00a0Holiday meals have become difficult. \u00a0Parents and children view each other with mutual incomprehension. \u00a0One explanation, suggests Luscomb, is that &#8220;in the Trump era, many Americans don\u2019t see voting as a decision about a set of policies, they see it as a moral imperative, an act that will make or break the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which family in Luscomb&#8217;s article resonates most with your own experience?<\/li>\n<li>What unites the United States?\u00a0 Is the slogan &#8220;E pluribus unum&#8221; (&#8220;out of many, one&#8221;) idealism or reality?<\/li>\n<li>Is there division in your faith community?\u00a0 What is it about?\u00a0 Is it strong enough to keep tear your faith family apart?<\/li>\n<li>In the months since the article was published, do you see people moving closer together, drifting farther apart, or about the same?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Seventh Sunday of Easter<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=487067745\">Acts 1:15-17, 21-26<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=487067779\">1 John 5:9-13<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=487067812\">John 17:6-19<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. After a very long section of final words to his overwhelmed disciples (see John 16:12, which is how I always felt in calculus), Jesus speaks a lengthy, powerful prayer for them (chapter 17). Today&#8217;s gospel is from the middle of that prayer, in which Jesus repeats his request \u201cthat they may be one, as we are one\u201d (vs. 11, 22).<\/p>\n<p>As Martin Luther would ask, &#8220;What does this mean?&#8221; <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Does it mean being of one mind, with one singular focus?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Does it mean being united together with each other in loyalty that is stronger than disagreement?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Could it perhaps mean both and more?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The disciples did not agree politically:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>zealots like Simon would never associate with tax collectors like Matthew.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet both were disciples of Jesus &#8230; who also once spoke about how he had come to divide families! (See Matthew 10:34-39.)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It&#8217;s complicated; maybe calculus is easier.<\/p>\n<p>The one family connection that always remains strong, John&#8217;s gospel reminds us, is the union between God (<i>Father<\/i>) and Jesus (<i>his only Son<\/i>).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is that truth-filled, joyful relationship of unbreakable love which Jesus wants to share with his disciples.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus knows that the world is full of conflict, cruelty, division, distraction, deception, and danger; he will feel all of it the next day on the cross.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This troubled world is the same one God loves so much that God sent Jesus in the first place (John 3:16-17).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Now Jesus has also sent his disciples into the world (17:18), and he won&#8217;t be there with them in the same way he has been.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cHoly Father, protect them\u201d&#8230;he prays\u2026&#8221;so that they may be one, as we are one.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This mind-bending prayer reveals to us something even more impossible to comprehend:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>God&#8217;s wildly generous love.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>God shares Jesus with an unappreciative world, and Jesus shares everything\u2014including giving his intimate relationship with the Father to his disciples, just before giving his very life to the world.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you knew you would die tomorrow, for whom and what would you pray today?<\/li>\n<li>Is the Church of Jesus united or divided&#8230;or both?\u00a0 Explain your answer.<\/li>\n<li>Why is truth important for real unity?<\/li>\n<li>What part can you play in helping Jesus&#8217; prayer come true?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Write a loving letter to a family member from whom you feel disconnected.<\/li>\n<li>As a group, pray together for your faith community and for the world.\u00a0 Do you think prayer helps unify Christians?\u00a0 How and why?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Gracious Father, we pray for your holy catholic church.
