{"id":8470,"date":"2021-04-13T07:23:59","date_gmt":"2021-04-13T12:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=8470"},"modified":"2021-03-30T08:35:56","modified_gmt":"2021-03-30T13:35:56","slug":"april-18-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/april-18-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"April 18, 2021&#8211;Seeing the Other"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Bob Chell, Sioux Falls, SD<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Warm-up Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you believe in demons? ghosts?<\/li>\n<li>Have you seen or experienced an encounter with a demon or a ghost?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a world we cannot see?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Seeing the Other<\/b><\/p>\n<p>First, some of their names:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>John Williams, Michael Brown, Elijah McClain, Robert Long, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Dylann Roof, Delaina Ashley Yaun, Hyun Jung Grant, Darren Wilson.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They were police officers and emergency room techs, artists and business owners, hard working and hardly working. Though DNA would almost certainly reveal all as multiracial they identified as African American, White, Native American and Asian American. Shooters and victims.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Law breakers and law enforcement. Their stories unique, yet eerily similar.<\/p>\n<p>We are weary of their stories, their sameness, their sadness. We want to celebrate Easter but looking for Jesus in our broken world seems futile. The gospel challenges us to look harder.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each time a person of color is shot by a police officer, it\u2019s a unique, one time situation, yet they are weirdly similar, and happen again and again. Why?<\/li>\n<li>Who or what is responsible for shootings which seem unjustified? \u00a0The officer who shoots? \u00a0Systematic racism? \u00a0Irrational \u00a0fear? \u00a0Poor judgement? \u00a0Lack of \u00a0training for those charged with a very difficult job? \u00a0 What other possible causes can you come up with?<\/li>\n<li>Is the underlying cause unique or part of a troubling pattern?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Third Sunday of Easter<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=484028024\">Acts 3:12-19<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=484028053\">1 John 3:1-7<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=484028084\">Luke 24:36b-48 <\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. To ease their anxiety Jesus asks for food so that, seeing him eat, they will see him as \u00a0their friend and not an apparition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>The only way I can describe it, it looks like a demon.\u201d <\/i>Those were the words of Darren Wilson, the police officer in Ferguson, Missouri who shot a young African American man, Michael Brown. <i>\u201cIt looked like a demon,<\/i>. So, Wilson said, <i>\u201cI shoot a series of shots. I don\u2019t know how many I shot, I just know I shot it.\u201d<\/i> <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not \u201chim\u201d, not \u201cMichael\u201d, not \u201ca man\u201d, a \u201cperson\u201d, a \u201cteen\u201d, Darren, the man.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Wilson said he shot \u201cit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Set aside the question of guilt and innocence, right and wrong for a moment to consider the nature of what transpired.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For some reason\u2014denial, racism, PTSD, training, or lack of training\u2014 police officer Darren Wilson did not see Michael Brown. He did not a person, but a demon, not Michael, but an \u201cit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/04\/iStock-1149265770.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8483 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/04\/iStock-1149265770-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/04\/iStock-1149265770-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/04\/iStock-1149265770-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/04\/iStock-1149265770-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/04\/iStock-1149265770-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/04\/iStock-1149265770-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/04\/iStock-1149265770.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I spent the last four years of my career as a pastor working with ghosts, some would say demons. Like Michael Brown, they are each \u201cother\u201d or \u201cit,\u201dsomething unlike you and I. Some were called monsters or demons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They were all inmate, prisoner, or con. Ghosts in khaki who walked the tiers of the South Dakota State Penitentiary.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They were stripped of their humanity by the system which knew them only by their inmate number or their crime. In becoming inmates they ceased to be men and became \u201cother.\u201d Other than human, like Michael Brown, they became other than like me.<\/p>\n<p>The disciples<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>are\u201cstartled and terrified\u201d, \u201cdisbelieving and \u2026wondering.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They watch as ghost becomes man, becomes human, becomes Jesus, the friend and brother<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>they lost only days before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">________________<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a mystery. I watched every Thursday night for four years as 12-15 visitors joined 100 inmates in the chapel of the penitentiary.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is jarring and anxiety producing to enter a prison, to be asked over and over again about cell phones and pocket knifes, tobacco and watches, chewing gum and shooting guns. Then the door to the sally port opens so you can enter. As the electronic gate slides shut behind you, you know what a sally port is without being told, a gate closed behind you, another closed in front of you. Then the same questions.<\/p>\n<p>The gate before you slides open\u2026through the lobby\u2026up two flights of steps\u2026another gate\u2026more stairs and doors\u2026and finally into the upper room, the chapel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You enter a world unlike that which you just transversed. The smiling men, some bearded or tattooed, some your own age or younger. Others are your dad\u2019s age, or your grandfather\u2019s. You remember, some came to this place at age 14. Which ones?<\/p>\n<p>The men join in the opening hymn, \u201cI saw the light.\u201d They are all singing, not only singing but singing the way you do in a car on the way to the lake with friends, full volume and deep feeling.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The service is much the same as in your congregation, other than that singing, of course. At least until the Passing of the Peace. Then it\u2019s pandemonium, everyone on their feet, moving around the room and greeting visitors and inmates alike.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You realize, at some point, you have forgotten to be scared and are having fun, as the inmates greet you and thank you for remembering them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Why do they thank you for remember them?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s because most are not remembered,\u201d the pastor tells you. Most of the men won\u2019t have a conversation with someone from outside the walls who isn\u2019t paid to be there until next week\u2019s worship. It is a different world.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Prisons are full of ghosts, ghosts in khaki \u2026until they walk through the door to the chapel. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then 34816 is transformed into Robert who you saw baptized. 74869 is David, a beloved child of God. 28482 is John, he\u2019s in the choir.<\/p>\n<p>One of the miracles and mysteries of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stdysmas.com\">St. Dysmas<\/a>* (The ELCA congregations located behind the walls<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>of the South Dakota State Penitentiary) is a first time visitor\u2019s realization, \u201cthey\u2019re just like us!\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They ARE us. We are \u2018us.\u2019 There is only one us, one kind of people, lots of variety but we are all alike when it\u2019s all said and done. None of us is defined by the worst thing we\u2019ve ever done. \u00a0Everyone who comes through the sally port the first time, inmates and officers, visitors and pastors, imagine they are different from <i>them<\/i>. Whoever they imagine the them to be.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">________________<\/p>\n<p>In the seven Sundays of Easter Jesus repeatedly appears to disciples who fail to recognize him, who are filled with fear and confusion, with joy and disbelieving.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What can you glean from Jesus&#8217; appearance to his disciples?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You are not a ghost, a child of a broken home, an irritant to your family, or a hopeless case. You are a beloved child of God. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>God has had an eye on you from before the beginning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>God <b>loves<\/b> you and will never stop loving you\u2014even if you dress in khaki one day.<\/p>\n<p>God <b>knows<\/b>\u00a0and God <b>loves<\/b> you, period.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You may not feel lovable,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and the truth is that sometimes we aren\u2019t very loving to each other, or even to ourselves.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But God sees through all that. God <b><i>knows<\/i><\/b> us and God<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><b><i>loves<\/i><\/b> us.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus came to forgive. Jesus came to heal. Jesus came to raise us up from the deadness of our battered and broken lives, to breathe life into our despair.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just as Jesus gathered broken people to become his disciples, God calls to you and speaks the same blessing, &#8220;Peace be with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When have you been seen as &#8220;other.&#8221; How did it feel? Has anyone first seen you as other and come to know you as a person?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Have you heard or seen people acting or implying as if other people we somehow \u201cless than\u201d or \u201cother?&#8221; Did you say or do anything? Why or why not? Do you wish you had responded differently?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This week watch for times of &#8220;othering&#8221;\u2014in your home, at school, in church and with your friends.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How Does Jesus appearance to his disciples encourage you to respond?<\/p>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Jesus, help us to recognize those unlike ourselves as sisters and brothers. Break down our hesitancy and awkwardness in unfamiliar situations. \u00a0Inspire us to make connections and build bridges when your people are divided.
