(waving palms, being part of procession, having a real live donkey, hearing the whole passion story, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever attended a Maundy Thursday worship service? What do you remember?<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever attended a Good Friday worship service? What do you remember?<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever attended an Easter Vigil worship service? What do you remember?<\/li>\n<li>If you haven\u2019t ever attended a worship service during Holy Week (Maundy Thursday\/Good Friday\/Easter Vigil), why not?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Provocative Palms<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Recently, the Miami Beach City Commission approved an urban forestry master plan.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The goal of the plan is to reduce the proportion of the city\u2019s canopy made up of palm trees to 25% by 2050.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>By increasing the number and percentage of other trees that provide more shade in the city, they hope to extra comfort for residents and visitors, while also helping to \u201creduce urban warming, improve air quality, and absorb more carbon and rainwater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/iStock-479495731.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8450 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/iStock-479495731-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/iStock-479495731-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/iStock-479495731-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/iStock-479495731-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/iStock-479495731-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/iStock-479495731-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/iStock-479495731.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The master plan was passed unanimously, but now one city commissioner is speaking out against how the plan is being implemented.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He and his staff are encouraging residents to oppose removal of palm trees as part of construction projects around the city.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He is worried that as the prominence of palm trees diminishes in the city\u2019s overall canopy, the city\u2019s \u201chistoric, cultural, and economic brand\u201d will suffer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The city commissioner\u2019s aide commented \u201cif this plan goes forward, they might as well remove the palm from our City\u2019s official logo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s environmental and sustainability director is speaking out in opposition to the city commissioner\u2019s concerns, saying that the \u201ccity is not going around chopping down palm trees\u201d and that at 25% of the total canopy, \u201cpalms will continue to be a focal point along the city\u2019s roads, greenspaces, and parks,\u201d even while shade trees are planted as a faster rate in order to \u201cmaximize the environmental, social, and economic benefits of trees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>Full article: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/miami-beach\/article249432995.html\">https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/miami-beach\/article249432995.html<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are the pros\/cons of Miami Beach\u2019s plan to reduce the percentage of palm trees in the city\u2019s canopy over the coming decades?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(This is a great chance to practice considering all sides of an argument.)<\/li>\n<li>List all the ways that you benefit from trees.<\/li>\n<li>What are you, your household, your congregation, and your local government doing in response to or in an effort to slow climate change?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Sunday of the Passion\/ Palm Sunday<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=482751925\">Isaiah 50:4-9a<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=482751954\">Philippians 2:5-11<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=482752161\">Mark 14:1\u201415:47<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=482752199\">Mark 15:1-39 [40-47]<\/a> (alternate)<\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Even if you don\u2019t read any of the optional parts (Mark 14 and 15:40-47), \u00a0this Sunday\u2019s gospel reading is long.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You may be familiar with the basic story, but the details vary across the four Gospel accounts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is easy to overlook some parts during Holy Week.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is why it is helpful to hear the story as a whole on Palm\/Passion Sunday, and then break it up into shorter texts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>During Holy Week we hear short parts of the story, paired with ritual actions (Palm\/Passion Sunday\u2014procession with palms; Maundy Thursday\u2014foot washing, Holy Communion, stripping of the altar; Good Friday\u2014procession and adoration of the cross).<\/p>\n<p>It is undeniable that this story is full of people and groups who have different expectations, hopes, and either a readiness or reluctance to change. Just in Mark 15:1-39, we get a glimpse of various people\u2019s values\/priorities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <b>Jewish Leadership (chief priests, scribes, elders, whole council) <\/b>is in search of a way to get rid of Jesus and keep their position as the religious authority (Mark 14:1).<\/li>\n<li><b>Pilate <\/b>is amazed by Jesus\u2019 answers (and lack thereof) to the charges brought against him (Mark 15:5) but also wants to keep the crowd calm (Mark 5:15).<\/li>\n<li><b>Jesus <\/b>Is committed to in-breaking the kin-dom of God. Although he would prefer an easier way, he is committed to doing what needs to be done (Mark 14:36).<\/li>\n<li><b>Barabbas and rebels<\/b> are willing to kill in order to change the status quo (Mark 15:7).<\/li>\n<li>The <b>Centurion<\/b> sees and confesses that Jesus is \u201cGod\u2019s Son,\u201d despite his position and background.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Throughout Jesus\u2019 life, we see God working to turn the world upside down, to reorient people\u2019s priorities, to make our world and lives look a bit more like God\u2019s original intention for a creation where no one lacks anything.<\/p>\n<p>God was never confined to the temple in Jerusalem. \u00a0We confess that Jesus is God incarnate, in-fleshed, but the tearing of the temple curtain at the moment of Jesus\u2019 death is a sign.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It wasn\u2019t torn from bottom to top (as it would have been if torn by human hands), but \u201cwas torn in two, from top to bottom\u201d (Mark 15:38), as if today God has left the building.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Today God \u00a0moves among and through each of us to enact all that for which Jesus preached, worked, and ultimately died and was raised.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read the text. What parts of the story jumped out to you as you listened this time?<\/li>\n<li>Were there any parts that you did not remember or remembered differently?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(Having a synopsis or parallel edition of the four Gospels would aid in comparing the details between the accounts.)<\/li>\n<li>With which character in the story do you most identify and why? How do their values\/priorities compare to your values\/priorities?<\/li>\n<li>How do you feel about change?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Is there is something in your life, congregation, community that might need to end\/die in order for something new\/better to be established and flourish?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find a creative way to hear and experience the whole Holy Week story.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Examples: there are YouTube videos of the Stations of the Cross, you can a buy or make a set of \u201cresurrection eggs,\u201d or (if it safe to gather and weather permits) walk around the church property or neighborhood, reading a different part of the story in a different location.<\/li>\n<li>Make space for everyone to reflect on the story of Jesus\u2019 Passion.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Provide art supplies for doodling, offer paper and pencils for journaling, set up a prayer labyrinth, or any other means of personal or group reflection that your group would find helpful.<\/li>\n<li>Palms\n<ul>\n<li>If you congregation is supplying palms this year, learn about your congregation\u2019s palms:\n<ul>\n<li>From what company do you order them?<\/li>\n<li>Where are they grown?<\/li>\n<li>Are they sustainably raised? (think about the environment and labor practices)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If your congregation isn\u2019t supplying palms this year, use construction paper (or other craft supplies) to make your own palms to use during the service.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You can search the internet for ideas about how to do this, but an easy one is to trace your hand on green paper, cuts out 5 or so \u201ccopies\u201d and then glue them onto a popsicle stick.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Redeeming God, thank you for all that you have given us, especially the gift of eternal, abundant life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Help us to know and work for your intentions in our lives and our world.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leslie Weber, Chesapeake, VA Warm-up Questions Have participants talk about what their experience of Holy Week has been in the past.\u00a0 Possible conversation starter questions include: Does the congregation you attend \u201ccelebrate\u201d Palm Sunday on its own or combine it with Passion Sunday?
