(I am not really sure what antibodies are either.)\u00a0 Seems I heard that the RNA of the virus tells my DNA what to do.\u00a0\u00a0<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">What I do know is that getting the flu vaccine has protected me for years.\u00a0 I remember making a trip to the school building for my polio vaccine (it was administered on a cube of sugar!)\u00a0 So when the vaccine is finally offered &#8211; I will be ready to take it.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You might want to do some research.\u00a0 Dr Cheryl Smith is a member of my home congregation.\u00a0 She taught me to look for information in the right places.\u00a0 I would suggest this one from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/different-vaccines\/how-they-work.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fcoronavirus%2F2019-ncov%2Fvaccines%2Fabout-vaccines%2Fhow-they-work.html\">Center for Disease Control.<\/a>\u00a0 I also found it helpful to ask someone I trusted.\u00a0 Christine worked in one of the university labs and she is great at helping me understand what I read in those journals.\u00a0\u00a0<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It is good for us to have some level of understanding; but in the end we may decide to take the vaccine based on the advice and recommendations of those whom we trust.\u00a0 I trust Anthony Fauci.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Will you take the COVID vaccine when it is available?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Why do you think some folks have decided not to take the vaccine?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Name one thing which you do even though you don\u2019t understand how it accomplishes what you have been told it will accomplish<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Have you been baptized?\u00a0 How does baptism work?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Baptism of our Lord\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=476272996\">Genesis 1:1-5<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=476273034\">Acts 19:1-7<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=476273080\">Mark 1:4-11<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Epiphany of our Lord (alternate)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=476273123\">Isaiah 60:1-6<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=476273162\">Ephesians 3:1-12<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=476273197\">Matthew 2:1-12<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The practice of baptism began before the start of the Christian Church.\u00a0 Hindu practice includes a ritual similar to the ceremonial washing experienced at the Jordan River by those who went out to experience John the Baptizer.\u00a0 John invited his hearers to cleanse their bodies as an indication of the cleansing of their inner moral selves.\u00a0\u00a0<b><\/b>Some may have entered the waters without having first examined their hearts.\u00a0 It is likely that some left convinced that their \u201cbath\u201d had made them clean.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Early leaders of The Way (what Christians were first called) continued the practice of baptism as an external mark of an internal alteration.\u00a0 Our church believes and teaches that the water alone can do nothing, but when the water is combined with the Word we are truly made new.\u00a0 The baptism event is important, it is sacred.\u00a0 Even more significant is the way it acknowledges our identity and our relationship with God.\u00a0 A Christian baptism is a baptism into the death and resurrection of Our Lord.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Those who are baptized by John may not fully comprehend the ways in which their lives are being transformed. \u00a0Yet, John is preparing them for the One who will come after him. \u00a0Other fiery preachers along the Jordan River spoke of the dangers of sin and sinfulness.\u00a0 John&#8217;s ritual \u00a0offers more; it cracks open the gates through which the Messiah will enter.\u00a0 John\u2019s testimony is true, even if those who hear it may not completely understand how it all works.\u00a0 \u201cI have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.\u201d\u00a0 John does a wonderful thing for those who come out to see him.\u00a0 But something much, much, much better lies ahead.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Do you find it frustrating when adults say to you, \u201cI don\u2019t know why it is that way, it just is.\u201d?\u00a0 Have you ever thought, \u201cMaybe they don\u2019t have a good answer?\u201d\u00a0 Maybe all they have is a feeling deep within their hearts that this is indeed true, truer than anything they can explain. \u00a0How do you decide whether you can trust such feelings?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Share an experience in which you were totally unable to convince someone of something you believe (we might even say which you KNOW) to be true.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">What is the process at your congregation for those who would be baptized?\u00a0 Is there an instructional class?\u00a0 Does the pastor make a visit?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Our tradition welcomes infants to the baptismal font.\u00a0 This is to remind us that God is the one who acts; we respond.\u00a0 Do you have friends or family members who insist that only adults be baptized? \u00a0What do \u00a0you think they understand baptism to be?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Pull out a copy of <em>Luther\u2019s Small Catechism<\/em> and read the section on baptism.\u00a0 Ask questions!\u00a0 And remember that you get the best answers from those who don\u2019t have all the answers.\u00a0 After you have read the <em>Small Catechism<\/em>, look at the baptismal liturgy in the hymnal.\u00a0 Take notice that there is very little for the one being baptized to say or do.\u00a0 This is true even when the one being baptized is an adult.<\/p>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Help us, in the midst of things we cannot understand, to believe and trust in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and the resurrection to life everlasting.\u00a0 Amen. \u00a0(From the funeral liturgy in\u00a0<em>Evangelical Lutheran Worship)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chris Heavner, Clemson, SC Warm-up Question How does the COVID vaccine work?
