A king sends out invitations to a wedding banquet, but no one responds. \u00a0It is curious that everyone ignores a royal summons, but it gets worse.\u00a0 The king sends a second invitation, tempting them with the delicious food.\u00a0 Some ignore the invitation, but many take it to another level.\u00a0 They seize the king\u2019s slaves, beating and killing them, simply for inviting them to a banquet.\u00a0 It is quite the overreaction.\u00a0 Not to be outdone in<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>overreaction, the king sends troops to destroy the murderers and burns their cities.<\/p>\n<p>The king has set his own city on fire, but apparently the wedding banquet is still on. \u00a0 Shrugging off his recent acts of violence, the king looks around and realizes he still has lots of food and empty seats.\u00a0 So he tells his slaves, \u201cGo out again, but this time to the streets.\u00a0 Invite everyone!\u201d\u00a0 Soon the wedding hall fills, a great party forms.\u00a0 As a rule, those on the outskirts and margins know how to party, much better than \u201cproper\u201d guests do. \u00a0Still, \u00a0the king can&#8217;t \u00a0relax and enjoy the party.\u00a0 Instead, he spots a guest not wearing a wedding robe and again he is enraged. \u00a0He was Invited at the last minute, but the guest still pays a price for being unprepared.\u00a0 The king binds the guest and shows him into the outer darkness.<\/p>\n<p>This parable leaves us with more questions than answers.\u00a0 Why do the guests refuse the king? \u00a0Why \u00a0both the guests and the king react so violently? Most of all, we wonder what this parable could possibly mean for our life. This parable does not have an easy, clear interpretation. \u00a0 As scholar Amy-Jill Levine suggests, when we meet a complicated parable, we are better off thinking less about what the parable means and more about what it can do: remind, provoke, refine, confront, disturb.\u00a0 (<i>Short Stories by Jesus<\/i> (New York: HarperOne, 2015)<\/p>\n<p>How does this parable make us feel?\u00a0 Does the disturbing nature of the parable help us recognize the places in our lives and our world where God\u2019s presence has been rejected?\u00a0 Does it cause us to confront the places in our nation where some are not given a seat at the table.\u00a0 This parable reminds us that God calls us to live an abundant life. \u00a0The kingdom of heaven is a banquet, and Jesus calls us \u00a0to put on our party dress and revel in God\u2019s grace.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever been invited to a party you didn\u2019t want to attend?\u00a0 What did you do?\u00a0 Have you ever had a party and worried that no one would come?\u00a0 How did that feel?<\/li>\n<li>Has God ever called you to a role you did not want to do?\u00a0 What might God be calling you to now?<\/li>\n<li>What emotions did you feel while hearing this parable?<\/li>\n<li>Why do you think the man was thrown out of the wedding banquet?\u00a0 What might it mean for us?\u00a0 Is it a reminder to dress correctly?\u00a0 To respond correctly when God calls us?\u00a0 To worry less and enjoy God\u2019s grace?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>During this time of Covid-19 we have not been able to gather as we did before.\u00a0 Large wedding banquets or parties are no longer safe and we all miss gathering together in our usual ways.\u00a0 Many people are suffering from loneliness and depression.\u00a0 As a group brainstorm ways you could reach out to those who are feeling lonely.\u00a0 You may want to send cards to elderly members of your congregation or make door decorations for your local nursing home.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Almighty God,\u00a0We give you thanks for calling each of us to the heavenly banquet.\u00a0 Guide us to work to make our lives on earth better reflect your heavenly kingdom.\u00a0 Amen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amy Martinell, Sioux Fall, SD Warm-up Question What is the most memorable wedding you have attended?\u00a0 What made it so memorable?
