You can find the calendar of readings for Year A at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearA\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Whose words do you cling to when you are in need?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When you are sick, whose voice comes to mind to comfort or instruct you? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once in a great while these people\u2019s words may be truly inspired, or the person delivering them may happen to be a master orator.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But I think that for the most part, coaches or mentors don\u2019t have any uniquely brilliant words. If you read that coach\u2019s pep talk as a transcript, it might sound a little silly, even trite.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Often, as a pastor, I<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>feel like I don\u2019t have anything that special to say. \u00a0But I know it\u2019s important to say the simple things, especially when it\u2019s hard: \u00a0\u201cGod loves you.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cYou are forgiven.\u201d \u201cPeace be with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that Jesus had magical words that transformed people.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This peace that Jesus talks about, the peace not like the world gives, which untangles your troubles and wards off fear, doesn\u2019t come from magic words, but from a relationship.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It comes from love. Think about how it completely changes the words \u201cpeace\u201d or \u201cI love you\u201d or \u201cyou\u2019ve got this,\u201d depending on who it comes from. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the relationship that makes the words ring in your ears, long after the person is gone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The relationship makes the words matter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When you can feel that the person giving the encouragement really means it, really believes in you, it makes a difference. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is Jesus\u2019 pep talk.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus is saying that when he leaves them, he won\u2019t leave them orphaned.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He encourages them &#8211; and us &#8211; \u201cyou can do it, and you won\u2019t be alone.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus promises the presence of the Advocate, \u00a0the Holy Spirit, \u00a0as a kind of permanent cheerleader, encourager, pep talker, for us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus also promises the gift of peace.<\/p>\n<p>That peace \u2013 you don\u2019t find it, earn it, or understand it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus just gives it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It comes, not through magic words, but through the love and authentic encouragement of a relationship.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When someone you trust says \u201cyou can do it\u201d or \u201cit\u2019s going to be ok\u201d &#8211; you feel a sense of peace and believe that it will indeed be okay.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is one way the Holy Spirit works, ever on the sidelines encouraging us and offering Jesus\u2019 peace.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever gotten a pep talk from scripture, a hymn, or an experience in worship?<\/li>\n<li>Are there any of Jesus\u2019 words, in today\u2019s passage or elsewhere, which are encouraging to you and give you peace?<\/li>\n<li>Jesus says, \u201cDo not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Be honest &#8211; how does that make you feel?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Watch a couple of Jerry Harris\u2019 \u201cmat talks\u201d or other pep talks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Write a pep talk for someone who needs it -perhaps even yourself.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If able, record it as a video to hype the person up and send it to them &#8211; or save it to remind yourself.<\/li>\n<li>What is the pep talk that the world needs right now?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Write and record a pep talk for the world.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Do you find yourself using any of the same words or themes that Jesus does in the gospel?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Encouraging God, bring your peace.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Help us feel that peace in all the places where we feel afraid.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thank you for giving us people in our lives who cheer us on and advocate for us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Help us to be an advocate for the voiceless and a cheerleader for those who are struggling, strengthened by your promise to never leave us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In Jesus\u2019 name we pray, Amen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brett Davis, Washington, D.C.
