You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearC\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/iStock-483772659.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7752 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/iStock-483772659-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/iStock-483772659-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/iStock-483772659-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/iStock-483772659-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/iStock-483772659-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/iStock-483772659-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/iStock-483772659.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot going on in this long passage, which includes the oft-quoted verse 16.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Also worth noting, however, is the curious statement of Jesus in verse 8: \u201cThe wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus makes this statement to Nicodemus, a Pharisee who \u201ccame to Jesus by night\u201d (verse 2) to inquire more deeply about Jesus\u2019 mission and identity. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The passage suggests that the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus includes elements of tension and conflict.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nicodemus\u2019 question about a person entering the mother\u2019s womb a second time (verse 4), and Jesus\u2019 query, \u201cAre you a teacher . . . and yet you do not understand?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(verse10) might be interpreted as verbal sparring.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But there is no necessary reason to regard Nicodemus as an enemy of Jesus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Later in John\u2019s gospel, Nicodemus speaks indirectly on behalf of Jesus against those who opposed him (John 7:45-51) and he cares for Jesus\u2019 body after his crucifixion (John 19:38-42). <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In light of those subsequent events, we can consider that Nicodemus is genuinely interested in Jesus\u2019 mission and identity, and sincerely desires understanding.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For the time being, however, understanding eludes Nicodemus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>His does not fully grasp what he has begun to glimpse in Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 curious statement about the wind blowing where it chooses describes Nicodemus\u2019 predicament.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just as people can hear the wind blowing without knowing its source or its destination, so Nicodemus has sensed something occurring in and through Jesus without understanding its true meaning or purpose.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nicodemus is not alone in this regard.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even those closest to Jesus and most favorably inclined toward him labor under the same predicament throughout John\u2019s gospel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In those who oppose Jesus the failure of understanding becomes a determination to stop him, to suppress him, even \u2013 eventually \u2013 to punish and exterminate him.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus is, for friends and foes alike, a wind of change blowing about them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They can all sense it, even if they cannot or will not comprehend it.<\/p>\n<p>The story about \u201cMecca Girl\u201d illustrates the different ways people react to any wind of change.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For some, a wind of change is a breath of fresh air, a stirring breeze; for others, it is a destructive, threatening storm.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus compares the work of God\u2019s Spirit, of which he himself is a living embodiment,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to a wind of change.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(It is interesting to note that in many languages, including those of the Bible, the words for \u201cspirit,\u201d \u201cwind\u201d and \u201cbreath\u201d are often the same.)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This does not mean that every wind of change is necessarily of God or from God; but it does mean that God\u2019s work will always be comparable to a wind of change, rattling our familiar habits and perceptions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We can sense God\u2019s work, even before we understand it.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What winds of change do you currently sense in our world?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In our nation?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In your congregation?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How are people responding to those winds of change?<\/li>\n<li>Which of those winds of change do you regard as a breath of fresh air, and why?<\/li>\n<li>How does \u201csight\u201d (sensing what is occurring) align with \u201cinsight\u201d (understanding what is occurring)?<\/li>\n<li>How do you decide, and how might we decide, whether a wind of change is from God and a work of God\u2019s Spirit?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestion<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Using the final reflection question in the preceding section, discuss a specific example of a current \u201cwind of change\u201d your group has sensed.<\/p>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Gracious and holy God, give us diligence to seek you, wisdom to perceive you, and patience to wait for you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Grant us, O God, a mind to meditate on you;
