You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearC\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>These days we often hear about items such as videos going \u201cviral.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Shared easily via email or social media, they spread rapidly from person to person reaching millions within a matter of days.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In a similar (though much slower) way, the impact of sin can also go viral, spreading out in ever widening circles.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In our gospel, Jesus attacks the root of the problem in several common life experiences, inviting us to become people of wholeness and grace.<\/p>\n<p>We return this week to the <i>Sermon on the Mount <\/i>as Jesus teaches about what life in the kingdom of heaven looks like.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Specifically, these verses (Matt. 5:21-37) are part of a six-section set that is known traditionally as \u201cthe antitheses,\u201d which means \u201ccontrasts\u201d or \u201coppositions.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This set, which also includes verses 38-48, is so named for the pattern which Jesus uses to introduce each section: \u201cYou have heard that it was said\u2026But I say to you\u2026.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And though in each case Jesus addresses a specific commandment or teaching from Torah, it is not because he thought them obsolete or useless. After all, Jesus has come to fulfill the law, not to throw it out. (Matt. 5:17).<\/p>\n<p>No, Jesus has not come to abolish the law, still, in each case, he goes deeper into their true intent. So, for instance, he cuts murder off at its roots, teaching us instead to deal appropriately with our anger.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just think of how easily situations escalate and spiral out of control, between individuals, different groups, and nations when anger flows into insults and disregard.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus calls us to deal with our internal \u201cstuff\u201d before<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>our words can cause injury to another person.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Reconciliation and forgiveness, this is the true and godly work we are to pursue.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Jesus attacks the root of adultery by setting boundaries around lust. In the over-the-top, hyperbole of plucking out eyes and cutting off hands, he calls us to take care that neither our gaze nor our touch turns other people into objects for our own sexual gratification.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Included in these limits is the need to abstain from the all too available trap of pornography.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cJust looking\u201d is not okay.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to divorce, Jesus goes further than the law (Deut. 24:1), especially in protecting those who were often the most vulnerable in the marriage covenant.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In his time and culture, it was \u201clegal\u201d for a man to easily divorce his wife for just about any reason.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This left her without means of support, which often meant poverty, prostitution, or, if she were fortunate, remarriage.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus, however, points to God\u2019s original intention regarding marriage as that of life-long monogamy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes, of course, the healthiest course of action is for a marriage to end.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even so, Jesus\u2019 teaching on the intended enduring nature of marriage is clear.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, in a world of \u201cspin,\u201d misinformation, and downright lies, we are called to be people of truth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To avoid swearing falsely, don\u2019t swear oaths at all.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That is, instead of needing to prop up our credibility by swearing oaths and making promises, Jesus\u2019 teaches us to be the kind of people others can trust.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Tell the truth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Live with integrity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cLet your word be, \u2018Yes, yes\u2019 or \u2018No, no;\u2019 anything more than this comes from the evil one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As commentators on Matthew\u2019s gospel note, Jesus isn\u2019t unique in setting boundaries against the impact of sin by going deeper into the intent of the Ten Commandments and Torah.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Other teachers have done the same.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even so, as Son of God and Messiah, Jesus\u2019 words have a different level of authority for Christians.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ultimately, what is presented in this passage \u2013 and indeed, in the whole of the Sermon on the Mount \u2013 is not a new take on the Law, but a call to a whole new way of life.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As you read through these verses, what are some of the things you find most challenging? Most helpful?<\/li>\n<li>Is it possible \u00a0to do the things Jesus calls for?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Wholly possible? Totally impossible?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or Somewhere in-between?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Invite participants to share the reason for their answer.<\/li>\n<li>If the gospel is supposed to be \u201cgood news,\u201d then where do you find grace in this passage and for whom? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>How might living more in line with Jesus\u2019 teachings here make for a better life?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A better world?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read through Martin Luther\u2019s explanation of the Ten Commandments in the <i>Small Catechism<\/i>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For each Commandment note how Luther expands and deepens the meaning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What are some of the \u201cpractical\u201d day-to-day actions you notice?<\/li>\n<li>Invite participants to consider one area, either from the Catechism or from today\u2019s gospel, that they can work on.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What is one small step, one small action, that they might take in this area in the coming week?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If people are comfortable, have them share. Prayer for each other and the Spirit\u2019s help. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Closing Praye<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Gracious and loving God, source of every good gift, give us eyes to see your love in Jesus\u2019 call to lives of grace and wholeness, and lead us by your Holy Spirit as we seek to follow.
