What was the shopping experience like?<\/p>\n<p><b>Hidden Costs?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2019\/11\/amazon-warehouse-reports-show-worker-injuries\/602530\/\">A November 2019 article<\/a> represents a collaboration between <i>The Atlantic<\/i> and <i>Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting.<\/i> It tells a handful of different stories of Amazon Warehouse employees being injured, and in one case even killed, on the job.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The article argues that most the injuries were either due to lack of safety training or overemphasis on efficiency. It blames Amazon\u2019s<i> <\/i>\u201cobsession with speed\u201d for having \u201cturned its warehouses into injury mills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/iStock-1150926506-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7657 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/iStock-1150926506-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/iStock-1150926506-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/iStock-1150926506-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/iStock-1150926506-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/iStock-1150926506-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/iStock-1150926506-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/iStock-1150926506-250x141.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/iStock-1150926506-622x350.jpg 622w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The other result of the company\u2019s high quotas and strict expectations for workers is the company\u2019s ever-growing domination of the marketplace and its founder\u2019s ever-growing net worth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Amazon is second only to Walmart when it comes to private employers in the US.<\/p>\n<p>As consumers have gotten used to the perks of a Prime membership, the company has made steps to make the shopping experience even better; this past holiday season, certain purchases came with guaranteed one-day free shipping.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, that translates to more work in Amazon\u2019s warehouses and even stricter deadlines and quotas for workers.<\/p>\n<p>The Amazon spokesperson who provided written comments for the article says that the reason that Amazon\u2019s work-related injury statistics are higher than the industry standard is that they are extra diligent about reporting all injuries. However, employees, who remained anonymous for the article, and a former OSHA employee, who investigated the fatal accident at an Amazon warehouse in Indiana, tell a different story.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever considered a company\u2019s labor practices before making a purchase? Why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>Will hearing stories like those contained in the article will change how you shop in the future? You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearC\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>After John\u2019s arrest, Jesus begins his public ministry in Galilee.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>While quoting Isaiah 9:1-2, the Gospel of Matthew refers to that place as \u201cGalilee of the Gentiles\u201d (Matthew 4:5, NRSV).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>During Isaiah\u2019s time, that region was ruled by a foreign power\u2014Assyria\u2014and during Jesus\u2019 time, it was ruled by a foreign power\u2014Rome.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In both cases, these Gentile empires caused the locals to live in a \u201cshadow of death\u201d (Matthew 4:16, NRSV). As Biblical commentator, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.workingpreacher.org\/preaching.aspx?commentary_id=3138\">Warren Carter, puts it<\/a>\u2014&#8221;Roman imperial structures and practices were bad for people\u2019s health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Roman\u2019s Empire\u2019s demands on local laborers to provide food for the empire and to pay taxes, led many to live in poverty and with the resulting poor health.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Carter suggests this is why there were so many people with disease and sickness seeking healing from Jesus as he began his ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 ministry is one of ending current imperial oppression and instituting God\u2019s reign, which is marked by new work (v. 18-20), new family\/community (v. 21-22), and a new chance at life (v. 23).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When he proclaims in verse 17 that \u201cthe kingdom of heaven has come near,\u201d he is saying that Rome is not ultimately in charge\u2014GOD IS! With his acts of healing, he works to counteract the damage that imperial greed causes.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can you think of other examples where \u201cempire\u201d (governmental and non-governmental forms of greed and selfishness) has led to suffering of a population?<\/li>\n<li>How might we participate in Jesus\u2019 ministry of repairing damage caused by greed and selfishness?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Play a board game (like Monopoly\u2026if you have the time), first, with every player playing for themselves; then play it again with all players working together as a team.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Discuss the difference in the experience and relate it to the idea of community and empire.<\/li>\n<li>Have teams work to build a tower out of blocks or similar material.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>First, do this untimed, to allow for precision.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then, do it timed (multiple times with less and less time), to focus on efficiency.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Discuss the difference in the experience and relate it to the idea of favoring productivity (profit) over people.<\/li>\n<li>Divide into three groups, and have each group act out one of the three parts of Jesus\u2019 initial ministry:\n<ul>\n<li>Calling of Peter &amp; Andrew\u2014new work (v. 18-20)<\/li>\n<li>Calling of James &amp; John\u2014new family\/community (v. 21-22)<\/li>\n<li>Healing\u2014new life (v. 23)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Closing Praye<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Gracious God, thank you for loving us and giving us new life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Be with all those who daily feel the oppression of modern-day empire.
