{"id":7417,"date":"2019-10-08T12:07:40","date_gmt":"2019-10-08T17:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=7417"},"modified":"2019-10-01T13:47:41","modified_gmt":"2019-10-01T18:47:41","slug":"october-13-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/october-13-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"October 13, 2019&#8211;Gratitude, Good for the Heart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Scott Mims, Virginia Beach, VA<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Warm-up Question<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As you look to the future \u2013 both your own personal future and the future of our world &#8211; what are some of the greatest challenges that you see?<\/li>\n<li>In terms of the above, what gives you hope?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Gratitude, Good for the Heart<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/iStock-1043164934.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7429 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/iStock-1043164934-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/iStock-1043164934-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/iStock-1043164934-768x540.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/iStock-1043164934-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/iStock-1043164934-250x176.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/iStock-1043164934-498x350.jpg 498w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Want to live longer?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It turns out that looking on the bright side could save your life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A study recently published in the medical journal, JAMA, found that\u00a0people who look at life from a positive perspective have about a 35% lower risk of major heart complications, such as a cardiac death, stroke, or a heart attack, compared to those whose outlooks were pessimistic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, this meta-analysis of nearly 300,000 people found that the more positive a person\u2019s outlook, the greater the protection from any cause of death.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These results correlate well with prior studies that have also found links between optimism and other positive health attributes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yet, as lead author, Dr. Alan Rozanski, notes, it is important not to confuse optimism with happiness.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Whereas happiness is an emotion, and thereby transient, optimism is a mindset \u2013 a persistent approach to life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The good news in this is that optimism can be learned.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You can train yourself to be a positive person.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Using mental exercises such as meditation and the practice of gratefulness, we can actually change the structure of our brains in ways that support a positive mindset.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/27\/health\/optimism-heart-attack-stroke-wellness\/index.html\">https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/27\/health\/optimism-heart-attack-stroke-wellness\/index.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is said that an optimist sees the glass half-full, while a pessimist sees the same glass half-empty.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In general, how would you describe yourself?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Is your glass half-full or half-empty?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(Or are you an engineer who sees a glass that is twice as big as it needs to be? You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearC\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Samaria.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Once again Luke reminds us that Jesus\u2019 ultimate destination is Jerusalem and the cross, and this encounter helps to enlarge our perspective on who will be included in his saving ministry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since Samaritans were generally considered by their Jewish neighbors to be outcasts and only marginally connected to the people of God, the location of this story also serves as a backdrop to the \u201cscandal\u201d at the heart of an otherwise straightforward story about healing.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 initial contact with these ten people who suffer from leprosy fits with how lepers were supposed to act according to the Jewish law.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lepers kept their distance from non-lepers and were required to call out in warning so that others would not accidentally come into contact with them. (see Leviticus 13:45-46) In essence, they were totally cut off from their families and communities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So, when these ten see Jesus, they cry out, begging for mercy. And Jesus responds! <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus, like the prophet Elisha in this week\u2019s first reading from 2 Kings 5, does not make a big show.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Such is the power of God at work in Jesus that he doesn\u2019t need to. He simply tells them, \u201cGo and show yourselves to the priests.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This was what people who had <i>already<\/i> been cured of leprosy were supposed to do in order to be readmitted to the community. (see Leviticus 14:2-32) They go, and, in their obedience, discover along the way that they have been healed. One of them, however, turns back.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Praising God with a loud voice, he lays down at Jesus\u2019 feet in an act of gratitude and worship.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The scandalous surprise, of course, is that he is a Samaritan!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Those who should be most attuned to God and most grateful for the lives they have received back are not, while the despised \u201coutsider\u201d becomes the example of gratefulness and faith.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We see this elsewhere in Luke\u2019s gospel and in the book of Acts, with sinners, outsiders, and Gentiles receiving God\u2019s grace with joy and gratitude while the \u201cinsiders\u201d seem to miss the point entirely. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the end, Luke doesn\u2019t say that the other nine former-lepers were any less cured than the Samaritan, though he does imply that they are less thankful.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus himself points to a deeper experience for the Samaritan.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The word that gets translated as \u201cget up\u201d in verse 19 is a word early Christians would have recognized as having to do with \u201cresurrection.\u201d Similarly, Jesus\u2019 final phrase might also be translated, \u201cyour faith has <i>saved<\/i> you.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Samaritan has been made \u201cnew\u201d by the power of Jesus and he knows it!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is a connection here between grace and gratitude, between faith and salvation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With which of the people in this passage do you most identify?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why?<\/li>\n<li>At the beginning of this encounter with Jesus, the ten lepers were all in the same predicament.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How can a shared experience (such as going through cancer or a disaster) break down barriers between people?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How does God\u2019s love and grace for <i>all<\/i> people fly in the face of the distinctions we often make between \u201cinsiders\u201d and \u201coutsiders\u201d?<\/li>\n<li>Why do you think the Samaritan was more grateful for Jesus\u2019 actions than the other nine lepers?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How might his status as an \u201coutsider\u201d have contributed to his response?<\/li>\n<li>Why is giving praise and thanks to God so important?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How do such acts of worship impact\/change us?<\/li>\n<li>The lepers in today\u2019s reading experience God\u2019s love and grace both in healing and in being restored to their families and communities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When and where do you experience the grace of God?<\/li>\n<li>What connection do you see between gratitude and faith?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How can praying for the small things, seeing God at work, and giving thanks encourage us to pray for larger matters?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Prayer Journals:<\/b> Encourage participants to keep a list of the people and situations for which they pray.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They might even put a check mark besides prayers that are eventually \u201canswered\u201d. The point of this activity is to notice, over time, how God works in and through our prayers, even if in unexpected ways.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To help folks get started, you might provide a small, inexpensive pocket-sized notebook for those who are interested.<\/li>\n<li><b>Count Your Blessings<\/b>: Have everyone make a list of the people, things, and experiences for which they are grateful.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t forget the small everyday stuff that we normally take for granted (e.g. clean water, food to eat, a hot shower).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you have time, have participants share from their list \u2013 you may well discover in the course of this discussion that you have even more reasons for gratitude.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>End the activity by giving thanks to God.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You might connect this to the closing prayer by first gathering in a circle and having each person lift up one thing from their list that they are especially grateful for today.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then end with the prayer below, or something similar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Gracious and loving God, source of every good gift, in the waters of baptism you name us and claim us and make us your very own.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thank you for the gift of faith, and for your relentless love that will not let us go no matter what.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Help us to count our many blessings, that we may live lives of praise and thanksgiving.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In Jesus\u2019 name we pray.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Amen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scott Mims, Virginia Beach, VA Warm-up Question As you look to the future \u2013 both your own personal future and the future of our world &#8211; what are some of the greatest challenges that you see?
