{"id":7312,"date":"2019-05-26T07:35:52","date_gmt":"2019-05-26T12:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=7312"},"modified":"2019-05-16T15:58:59","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T20:58:59","slug":"june-2-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/june-2-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"June 2, 2019&#8211;Being One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Chris Heavner, Clemson, SC<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Warm-up Question<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What makes you and your buddies, buddies?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What unites you or holds you together?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have a symbol for your group \u2013 a style of clothes or type of hats?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Being (Not) One<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/05\/iStock-936369514.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7343 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/05\/iStock-936369514-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/05\/iStock-936369514-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/05\/iStock-936369514-768x409.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/05\/iStock-936369514-1024x545.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/05\/iStock-936369514-250x133.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/05\/iStock-936369514-657x350.jpg 657w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was officiating at the wedding of two of our Clemson University alumni.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their friends stood up to make remarks \u2013 all of which were glowing and emotional.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some of these had gone to Clemson, so they included a \u201cGo Tigers!\u201d in their comments.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>High school friends started noting their graduations from other colleges.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then there was the admission from one that she attended a college in the SEC Conference rather than the ACC.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(College football rivalries are important in the South.)<\/p>\n<p>These exchanges were good natured and humorous; some such exchanges are not.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>College football is but one place where division and mistrust and hatred boil over into something ugly.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our country seems to be in a phase were name-calling and belittling have ceased to be taboo.<\/p>\n<p>This is surely a place where the followers of Jesus need to make known a better way.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the midst of talk which sets one against another, Christians need to share our story and affirm our convictions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The followers of Jesus have had differences of opinion, but we have a message of unity beyond our personal preferences and styles.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Name the five persons with whom you have the strongest bond?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What brings you together?<\/li>\n<li>Identify at least two topics or ways of doing stuff which is different among your closest friends.<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever had to set aside part of who you are for the sake of someone you wanted as a friend?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What benefit did you experience by not allowing that one thing to push you apart?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think Jesus\u2019 followers are \u201cone\u201d?<\/li>\n<li>What can you do (what can your group do) to best reflect the oneness we have as a result of Jesus\u2019 ministry and his teachings?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Seventh Sunday of Easter<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=424755494\">Acts 16:16-34<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=424755532\">Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20-21<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=424755573\">John 17:20-26<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearC\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>These verses are the closing words of Jesus\u2019 \u201cFarewell Discourse.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Starting at 13:1, Jesus speaks words to his followers of how they are to understand his ministry and carry on with his mission.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is clear that being \u201cone\u201d is important to him.<\/p>\n<p>When Jesus speaks of being one with the Father (John 10:30), he means they are of the same nature.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are one in the way that your foot and your hand are one.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They cannot be separated!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is the oneness he wants his followers to have.<\/p>\n<p>As is true for the times in which we live, the times in which Jesus lived were full of conflict and contentious parties.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus understood the powerful blessing known as the simple gift of being in sync with those around us. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To be \u201cone\u201d means we are so firmly connected that we can even risk the challenging work of honest speech.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The hand can expose the splinter in the heel of the foot (which will cause the foot great pain) without the foot lashing out &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWe are no longer connected!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To be \u201cone\u201d means we know our lives and our futures are connected and so we will act in a way which ensures both of us will experience the fullness God hopes for us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is the prayer which Jesus offers.<\/p>\n<p>We are one, with the Christians in Sri Lanka gunned down during Sunday worship.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We are one, with the inhabitants of Marshall Islands whose nation is being lost due to global warming.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We are one, with refugees caught in the cross fire of drugs and gangs. We are one.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus said it was so.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And we will live as one, for the wellbeing of all the creation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When have you witnessed persons acting as \u201cone\u201d?<\/li>\n<li>What changes in behavior are likely to happen when we acknowledge the oneness of all God\u2019s children?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think Jesus was limiting our \u201coneness\u201d to those who belong to our congregation?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To our denomination?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To Protestants?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To Christians?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify persons in your community (maybe even your youth group) with whom you have had differences.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Speak to them of the oneness you share, regardless of what might seem to separate you.<\/li>\n<li>Make a list of those with whom you are one, and a list of those with whom you wish to strengthen an awareness of oneness.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Pledge to pray the names of these persons each day for the next two weeks.<\/li>\n<li>Watch one of many videos in which refugees share their stories.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Here is one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6b5H7je4m1A\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6b5H7je4m1A<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Heavenly Father, you have made us one through the words and work of your Beloved Son.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Living as one can be a challenge; living as one is a tremendous opportunity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With your grace, support us in our efforts to bring to fullness that which you have given to us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Help to be one, with all your children and with each of our neighbors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chris Heavner, Clemson, SC Warm-up Question What makes you and your buddies, buddies?\u00a0 What unites you or holds you together?
