{"id":7232,"date":"2019-04-09T06:52:40","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T11:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=7232"},"modified":"2019-04-02T13:39:43","modified_gmt":"2019-04-02T18:39:43","slug":"april-14-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/april-14-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"April 14, 2019&#8211;Entrance Song"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Brett Davis, Washington, DC<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Warm-up Question<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Think about all of the places, events, and types of people who have entrance music.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What would be your entrance music?<\/p>\n<p><b>Entrance Song<\/b><\/p>\n<p>What do brides, WWE wrestlers, political candidates, and sports teams have in common?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They all have an entrance song!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Virginia Tech football fans feel their hearts beat faster as <i>Enter Sandman<\/i> begins to welcome their team.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>People know to stand with the opening lines of Wagner\u2019s <i>Bridal Chorus<\/i> (you know, \u201cHere Comes the Bride\u201d), to welcome the bride. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In WWE wrestling, there has long been a tradition of entrance music for the different wrestlers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A match between two characters can be going on, the bad guy seems to be winning, and suddenly, you hear the opening bars of . . . wait, who\u2019s that?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A good guy comes to save the day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dramatic entrances are part of the excitement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/04\/iStock-501512875.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7239 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/04\/iStock-501512875-300x163.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/04\/iStock-501512875-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/04\/iStock-501512875-768x418.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/04\/iStock-501512875-1024x558.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/04\/iStock-501512875-250x136.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/04\/iStock-501512875-643x350.jpg 643w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a very different way (or is it), political candidates use music for their entrance and to set a tone at rallies.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Presidential candidates have often used theme songs for their campaigns.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, particularly in recent years, musicians have objected to candidates using their songs either with permission or because they don\u2019t like the candidate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/why-politicians-keep-using-songs-without-artists-permission-36386\/\">Rolling Stone article<\/a> notes that candidates on both sides of the aisle have been involved in these disputes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Musicians object because it seems like an endorsement of the candidate and what they stand for, even subconsciously.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, there is often little legal action that artists can take, as long as the venue has a license to play music.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The article notes that the entrance music often happens unintentionally, with a junior staffer who\u2019s making the playlist just thinking of what songs are cool or what will pump up the crowd.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What\u2019s your favorite use of an entrance song?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How does entrance music affect people? You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearC\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>At most churches on Palm Sunday, people receive palm fronds, and the worship and music includes \u201cHosanna,\u201d which we associate with Jesus\u2019 triumphal entry into Jerusalem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But did you notice that neither appears in Luke\u2019s version of the story?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No palms are mentioned, but people spread their cloaks on the ground in Jesus\u2019 path, and the crowd\u2019s excitement and shouts of joy raise the concern of the Pharisees. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A \u201cmultitude of the disciples\u201d shouts, \u201c\u2018Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!\u2019\u201d (Luke 19:38) as Jesus enters Jerusalem. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>This echoes the \u201cmultitude of the heavenly host (angels), praising God and saying, \u2018Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!\u2019\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>from Luke 2:13-14.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some parents have a special song for their child, that they sing to them, or play for them, from birth onward.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many families and friends have special ways of greeting each other that are specific to the person and create a bond over years.<\/p>\n<p>These words of acclamation are Jesus\u2019 entrance music.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s a riff on the same song that has been sung since his birth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Crowds, both heavenly and human, have gathered to praise God, welcome Jesus as divine, and proclaim peace.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus knows that this music and the praise of the crowds does not mean that his path will be easy. He knows his welcome into Jerusalem is a path to the cross.<\/p>\n<p>The objection of the Pharisees is essentially, \u201cThat\u2019s our song!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You can\u2019t say that!\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They object to the use of these words of acclamation that they believe are reserved for the Messiah.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Like<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>musicians objecting to the use of their music, they object to the crowds\u2019 calling Jesus \u201cthe one who comes in the name of the Lord.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But there is not anything they can do to stop the crowds. Not only is the energy of a crowd a powerful force but, as Jesus says, if the people didn\u2019t, the rocks themselves would shout.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Palm Sunday worship and this coming Holy Week remind us that Jesus doesn\u2019t stay at the high point of his entrance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We know that the same crowds that laid down their cloaks for Jesus will shout \u201ccrucify!\u201d and not risk objecting when Jesus is stripped of his clothes, humiliated, and hung on the cross.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But Jesus\u2019 entrance song, \u201cblessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord, peace to God\u2019s people on Earth\u201d still hangs in the air today &#8211; and is still sung in worship.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It reminds us that nothing, not even death, keeps God down, and these words tell us the end of the story.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do your family and friends have any long-held tradition of how you greet each other?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Does that set a tone for how you interact?<\/li>\n<li>Has anything ever been done in your name that you\u2019re not comfortable with?<\/li>\n<li>Knowing the full story of Jesus\u2019 birth, ministry, death, and resurrection, what do you think should be Jesus\u2019 entrance song?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Would the artist\/musician object?<\/li>\n<li>If Jesus was coming to speak at a big venue today, how would you imagine his entrance?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Humble, exuberant, or somewhere in between?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Discuss what Jesus\u2019 entrance song would be today.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Play or sing some of your ideas to each other.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In small groups or pairs, imagine and act out Jesus\u2019 entrance to a crowd with fitting music.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>God of grace and power,\u00a0for the sake of us and all creation, you came boldly through shouts of welcome, knowing that your cross lay ahead.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Help us to greet one another with peace, welcome you into our community, and look for you in our everyday lives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brett Davis, Washington, DC Warm-up Question Think about all of the places, events, and types of people who have entrance music.\u00a0 What would be your entrance music?
