You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearC\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Who will join the Father\u2019s party?<\/p>\n<p>Our story from Luke\u2019s gospel story starts with the scum of society (tax collectors and sinners) coming to listen to Jesus. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The religious leaders (Pharisees and scribes) grumble and mumble about Jesus eating with such scandalous types.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They don\u2019t like the shady company Jesus interacts and eats with.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They don\u2019t like Jesus&#8217; kind of party.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I get them a little.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In a world where we are judged by who we hang with, they judge Jesus by who he eats with and knows.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The reality for Jesus is that God is throwing a party for outsiders like these. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So Jesus tells a three stories; our lesson includes the third in Luke 15.)<\/p>\n<p>Jesus tells about a father (God perhaps) who is despised by his son. When the younger son asks for his share of what will belong him as an inheritance, he is saying, in essence, that he wishes his father was DEAD!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A dead father equals inheritance now.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The father complies with the request of his son.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He just freely gives away half of what was his to his demanding son.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Crazy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps Jesus is saying God the Father is willing to be identified as a hated and seemingly unwise father.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 T<\/span>he son takes the money and flees.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, it doesn\u2019t go well for the younger son away from home.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I mean, have you ever thought pig slop looked tasty?!?!? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In a moment of desperation, he begins to understand his actions have brought him to a situation (knee deep in pig slop!) from which he cannot free himself.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He returns, planning to admit his sin, not be called son, and become a hired hand.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>While he is far off the father runs up and embraces him.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It appears the father was sleepless while watching, waiting, and fearing his son was dead, but yet hoping for his return.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>God the Father waits with compassion to embrace the lost and resurrect the dead now. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The son says he has sinned and is not worthy to be called son. Before he can continue, the father launches into full blown party mode, with robe, ring, sandals and fatted calf summoned to signal to all that \u201cthis is my son and I accept him.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The son, by passing the \u201chired hand\u201d status jumps from dead\/lost to found\/son!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Party time! <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But wait, the older son has been around the whole time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He, the practical, faithful and serious older son, is angry and does not approve.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe he refuses to recognize that he has only been going through the motions of being alive.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The younger brother was off with prostitutes (he assumes) and he never even got a young goat for time with friends.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Imagine the look on the older son\u2019s face when the younger gets a fatted calf, whole community party with dancing and music.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you see yourself more as the younger or older son?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>How does hearing about God acting unwisely, being hated, and throwing wild parties impact your understanding of who God is or what God does? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Can you imagine a teenage or young adult son wishing his father dead?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How would your father act if you asked today for half of all your family possesses? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>What kind of parties does your church throw when someone who has hurting and lost has been found? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Do these parties offend anyone?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As a group, think of someone you haven\u2019t seen in a while.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe it\u2019s a friend or someone who can\u2019t leave home easily.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Make a plan to drop by their house with cake, ice cream, candles, music and anything party like.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Make a colorful banner with their name on it and a message of love.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Go!<\/li>\n<li>Write a note to your parent(s) or a trusted adult.\u00a0 Talk about how glad you are to be a daughter or son.\u00a0 Express thanksgiving, regret or whatever you might say trusting that their love for you reflects the Father\u2019s love who would throw a party for you in a moment.\u00a0 Be sure to give it to them!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>God our party throwing Father!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thank you for giving us the younger and older son characters all that you give us each day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Help us to share you joy with all shady characters of the world and not withhold dancing, music and food.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thank you for finding us when we are lost and bringing us life when we are dead.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Help us to join the party!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Amen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bryan Jaster, Winchester, VA Warm-up Question When was the last time you were at a party? \u00a0 Why was it happening? \u00a0 Party Time!
