{"id":7202,"date":"2019-03-19T07:14:18","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T12:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=7202"},"modified":"2019-03-12T16:04:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T21:04:48","slug":"march-24-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/march-24-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"March 24, 2019&#8211;Changing Minds &amp; Lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Leslie Weber, Chesapeake, VA<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Warm-up Question<\/b><\/p>\n<p>How would you define the word \u201crepentance\u201d?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Does your definition change if you are defining it in church terms vs. non-church terms?<\/p>\n<p><b>Changing Minds &amp; Lives<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/12\/11\/166884441\/in-freedom-ex-felon-becomes-probation-counselor\">An article on NPR.org<\/a> (based on a piece heard on All Things Considered) tells the story of Clark Porter, who at 17 was convicted of robbing a post office at gunpoint and sentenced to 35 years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After serving 15 years, he was released and radically changed his life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/03\/iStock-931513848.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7220 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/03\/iStock-931513848-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/03\/iStock-931513848-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/03\/iStock-931513848-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/03\/iStock-931513848-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/03\/iStock-931513848-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/03\/iStock-931513848-525x350.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While on probation, he attended Washington University in St. Louis and then boldly asked the Chief U.S. probation officer in his district, Doug Burris, for a job.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The article explains that at first Burris laughed, but eventually took it to the Chief Judge even though he expected her to find the idea even more ridiculous than he did and say \u201cno.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was wrong; she agreed to give Porter and his idea a chance.<\/p>\n<p>Through his work with ex-felons, Porter, has not only turned his life around, but has had a similar impact on countless others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The 7-month program includes community service, job searches, and therapy, and has made it possible for other ex-offenders to resist the life they once knew and choose a new way forward.<\/p>\n<p>It is hard work\u2014to break the cycles of recidivism for the participants and break the systems of punishment that have been perpetuated for decades with less than stellar results\u2014but Porter and Burris have become quite the unexpected duo.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify all the instances of changed attitude or behavior that occurred in this news story. <i>(note: there is more than just Porter\u2019s and other ex-felons!)<\/i><\/li>\n<li>What do you know about the criminal justice system, parole\/probation, and recidivism?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Third Sunday in Lent<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=419396684\">Isaiah 55:1-9<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=419396724\">1 Corinthians 10:1-13<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=419396759\">Luke 13:1-9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearC\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It is easy to get caught up in the image of the man in Jesus\u2019 parable declaring that the fruitless fig tree should be cut down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It can be frightening to think that you might be that fruitless fig tree in God\u2019s eyes and, therefore, you will be cut down. It is easy to read the words \u201cunless you repent\u201d with that same terror in mind. Many Christians would read that repeated warning with its associated command as a work\u2014something you must in order to be saved.<\/p>\n<p>As a Lutheran, this reading makes me cringe.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is nothing that I have to do in order to be acceptable to God and gain eternal life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We are saved by grace through faith, which is a gift of the Holy Spirit\u2014AND SO IS REPENTANCE!<\/p>\n<p>If you google \u201crepent,\u201d the first definition shown is \u201cfeel or express sincere regret or remorse about one&#8217;s wrongdoing or sin.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, that definition is lacking when you look at the Greek word which we see used in Luke 13, \u201c<i>metanoia,\u201d<\/i> which Merriam-Webster defines as \u201ca transformative change of heart; especially: a\u00a0spiritual conversion.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>Metanoia\u201d<\/i> is a compound word of \u201c<i>meta<\/i>\u201d (meaning change) and \u201c<i>nous<\/i>\u201d (meaning mind).<\/p>\n<p>In a letter from 1518, Luther talks about discovering this definition.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Latin word he had always read in these passages had only meant remorse and the acts of penance imposed by the church. In the letter, he thanks his colleague for opening his eyes to the true meaning of the scriptures. He now understands \u201cmetanoia\u201d or \u201crepent\u201d as \u201cthe transformation of one\u2019s mind and disposition\u201d (Luther\u2019s Works 48 p.66) and \u201ccoming to one\u2019s right mind and a comprehension of one\u2019s own evil after one has accepted the damage and recognized the error.\u201d (LW 48 p.67). He highlights that the Latin word misrepresents the true meaning of the Greek, because it \u201csuggests more an action than a change in disposition\u201d (LW 48 p.68).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Luther goes on to explain that \u201cthis change is accomplished [by] the grace of God\u201d (LW 48 p.67).<\/p>\n<p>Our feelings of contrition, the reorientation of our minds, and changing of our behavior are not things necessary for God to love us, but instead are a result of God already loving us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Because Christ already died for us and the Holy Spirit lives in us, we are able to repent and \u201cbear fruits worthy of repentance\u201d (Luke 3:8, NRSV).<\/p>\n<p>Repenting is a daily discipline\u2014an acknowledgement that God is constantly turning us back around to focus on Godly things.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is not just a personal thing though; groups, communities, and institutions can also participate in repentance\u2014admitting they have done wrong or fallen short and then take steps to prevent history from repeating itself\u2014all by the grace of God!<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are some things for which your worshipping community needs to repent?<\/li>\n<li>What might repentance look like in those cases (i.e. how do you\/they make amends and change behavior in the future)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make time and space for personal confession, if time, space, and resources allow, you can have each person write their confessions (those things for which they repent) on dissolving paper, flash paper, or regular paper and have them dispose of them with water or fire.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No matter how you do the confession part, be sure to announce assurance of absolution; if you need help with that part\u2014ask your pastor!<\/li>\n<li>Brainstorm a list of ways that your congregation might consider repenting (changing behavior for the future) and share it with the leadership.<\/li>\n<li>Play an epic game of pin the fruit on the tree!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Split into teams or work as one group against the clock to brainstorm acts \u201cworthy of repentance\u201d and write each one on a cutout of a piece of fruit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Have participants, while blindfolded, try to stick them on a big picture of a tree on the wall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If they fail, have the rest of the team help \u201cre-aim\u201d them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Creator God, thank you for loving us even when we fall short and fail to bear good fruit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Help us to turn our minds, hearts, and lives towards you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In Jesus\u2019 name we pray, Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leslie Weber, Chesapeake, VA Warm-up Question How would you define the word \u201crepentance\u201d?\u00a0 Does your definition change if you are defining it in church terms vs. non-church terms?
