{"id":7130,"date":"2019-02-05T08:06:54","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T13:06:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=7130"},"modified":"2019-01-29T14:55:32","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T19:55:32","slug":"february-10-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/february-10-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"February 10, 2019&#8211;A Time for Leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Scott Mims, Virginia Beach, VA<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Warm-up Question<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Who are some of the people who have had a positive influence on your life?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What was it about them that was so meaningful to you?<\/p>\n<p><b>A Time for Leadership<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, January 25, President Trump signed a bill temporarily re-opening the federal government after a partial shutdown.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The 35-day shutdown \u2013 the longest yet in U.S. history \u2013 not only dominated recent news headlines but has negatively impacted the lives of many in our country, most especially the 800,000 federal workers who were either furloughed or required to work without being paid.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/01\/28\/us\/politics\/shutdown-cost-us-economy-11-billion-cbo-says.html\">Initial estimates by the Congressional Budget Office<\/a> indicate that the permanent cost to the U.S. Economy will be around $3 billion.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Leadership will figure heavily in the days ahead when it comes to how, or if, this issue will be resolved.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Congressional leaders have until February 15 to reach a compromise on the Republicans request billions of dollars to be allocated for a border wall which, up until this point, Democrats have refused to fund.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Failure on the part of these leaders to work together to successfully navigate competing priorities and the current political landscape could potentially lead to another shutdown.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is leadership?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How do you define it?<\/li>\n<li>Who would you say are some of the greatest leaders in modern history?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why?<\/li>\n<li>When it comes to choosing who to follow, what qualities do <i>you<\/i> look for in a leader?<\/li>\n<li>Who inspires you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Fifth Sunday after Epiphany<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=415778624\">Isaiah 6:1-8 [9-13]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=415778685\">1 Corinthians 15:1-11<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=415778723\">Luke 5:1-11<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearC\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/02\/iStock-938577732.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7138 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/02\/iStock-938577732-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/02\/iStock-938577732-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/02\/iStock-938577732-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/02\/iStock-938577732-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/02\/iStock-938577732-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/02\/iStock-938577732-525x350.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Recently, my wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Like most everyone we know, we had no idea exactly what we were getting into when we said, \u201cI do.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We only knew that from that moment on our lives would never be the same.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There would be new demands and challenges, new joys and surprises, and a journey together filled with moments we\u2019d never even dreamed of.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wonder if, somehow, Simon Peter and the other fishermen-turned-disciples of Jesus didn\u2019t also feel the same.<\/p>\n<p>We are by the Lake of Gennesaret this week, also known as the Sea of Galilee.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus\u2019 teaching, preaching, and acts of power have begun to draw large crowds.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>People are pressing in on him, so, making the most of the geography and the water\u2019s effect of providing natural amplification, Jesus has a couple of local fishermen, including one Simon, take him out in their boat.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What did Jesus say to the crowd?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Were the fishermen hanging on his every word?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Luke doesn\u2019t say.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, whatever their experience of Jesus, it must have made an impression because, despite their knowing better, they follow his next request to put out into the deep water and let their nets down for a catch.<\/p>\n<p>Now just imagine the scene.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Simon Peter is initially reluctant to even bother because he knows that this isn\u2019t the right time of day for fishing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not only that, but, when Jesus first showed up, they were right in the middle of cleaning their equipment after a long, fruitless night of catching nothing. What Jesus\u2019 asks seems pointless, but perhaps we are meant to hear echoes of other stories Luke has already told about the intersection of human impossibility and divine power, stories like that of Mary and of Zechariah and Elizabeth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For, in their obedience to Jesus\u2019 word, Simon and his partners find themselves knee deep in such a huge catch of fish that their boats begin to sink.<\/p>\n<p>It is clear this is no ordinary moment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Shocked and amazed by what he has just experienced, Simon Peter\u2019s response to being in the presence of the Holy is to beg Jesus to leave him, for he knows that he is not worthy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet the good news for Simon Peter, and for us, is that his lack of holiness does not disqualify him. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For the same power that brought him to his knees now lifts him and the other fishermen up.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cDo not be afraid,\u201d Jesus says to them, \u201cfrom now on you will be catching people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Peter and his companions leave everything to follow Jesus. Their lives will never be the same. They have no idea where this journey will lead. They only know that, if Jesus isn\u2019t worth following, then nobody is! <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read through this passage again.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Along with the miraculous catch of fish, one of the big surprises is <i>who<\/i> Jesus calls to be his disciples \u2013 uneducated fishermen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What are some of the other surprises that you see?<\/li>\n<li>How do you feel about Simon Peter and his companions\u2019 response? Why do you think these men dropped everything to follow Jesus? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>What do you think it means to follow Jesus today?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What does it look like to be a disciple?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Is it difficult to follow Jesus? Why\/why not? What might we need to leave behind?<\/li>\n<li>When it comes to \u201ccatching people,\u201d what do you think the church\/your congregation\/your small group needs to be doing at this point in time?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Video<\/b>: For further discussion on the sheer grace of being called to follow Jesus, watch Rob Bell\u2019s short video, <i>Dust <\/i>(Nooma series).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Though not specifically about this passage, he presents a great take on what being called by a rabbi to \u201cfollow me\u201d meant in Jesus\u2019 day, and how Jesus\u2019 invitation to Peter, James, John, and the rest would have been most unusual.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Talk together about what it means that Jesus calls <i>us<\/i> to be his followers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What does it mean to you that Jesus believes in you?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Does this change the way you see yourself as a disciple?<\/p>\n<p><b>Remember Your Baptism: <\/b>As part of your concluding prayer this session, invite participants to remember their baptisms as a connection to the calling we receive to be followers and disciples of Jesus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This could be as simple as having a small bowl of water in which you invite them to dip a finger and make the sign of the cross on their own forehead.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or perhaps have them bless one another.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Especially instructive are these words from <em>Evangelical Lutheran \u00a0Worship<\/em> (pg. 227) with which the presiding minister addresses the assembly during a baptism:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God.<\/p>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Gracious and loving God, before we could even think to seek you, you have come seeking us.
