You can find the calendar of readings for Year C at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearC\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gospel Reflection<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/01\/iStock-645656712.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7097 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/01\/iStock-645656712-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/01\/iStock-645656712-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/01\/iStock-645656712-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/01\/iStock-645656712-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/01\/iStock-645656712-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/01\/iStock-645656712-525x350.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus wasn\u2019t the groom at the wedding in Cana, and he didn\u2019t technically save a life, but he was a hero.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In biblical times, running out of wine at a wedding was an emergency.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Wine was more common and safer to drink than water.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Wine was a symbol of joy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Wine was also an expected gift from friends, who would provide it in advance of the week long wedding celebration.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To run out of wine at a wedding would bring enormous shame to the families involved.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It would be an indication that they did not have enough friends.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It would harm their social standing in the village beyond repair.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus rescued a dire situation.<\/p>\n<p>As usual with the gospel of John, however, there is also much more to the story.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>John calls this episode \u201cthe first of his signs,\u201d meaning the miracle points beyond itself to something more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Clues are dropped throughout the story.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThe third day\u201d not only reflects the Jewish custom of being married on Tuesday (because the third day of creation is doubly blessed by God calling something good\u2014see Genesis 1:9-13), it also points to the resurrection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dialogue with his mother about his \u201chour\u201d anticipates his crucifixion.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It seems likely that the wine is meant to allude to Holy Communion; the only other time empty containers are \u201cfilled\u201d in John\u2019s gospel it is with an abundance of bread after the feeding of the multitude.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And the quality of the wine from Jesus exceeds what anyone else provides, a theme which will recur throughout the gospel.<\/p>\n<p>This story will become important background for the night immediately before the \u201chour\u201d when Jesus saves flailing humanity with his self-giving heroics on the cross.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He quotes Song of Songs to his disciples:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cRise, let us be on our way.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is what the groom says to his bride, inviting her to the vineyard.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He then says, \u201cI am the vine\u201d on his way to urging his disciples to \u201cbear fruit\u201d and \u201clove one another as I have loved you.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The point of everything he says is symbolized by the abundant wine:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The \u201csign\u201d at Cana points to the gift of abundant life saved with love and overflowing with top-notch joy.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How does the newlywed Edwards couple remind you of Jesus and his love?<\/li>\n<li>When and where in your life has Jesus transformed trouble into joy?<\/li>\n<li>Does weekly worship feel like a wedding reception?\u00a0 Why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>Who has loved you, and inspired you to love others?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Activity Suggestions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sponsor and organize a First Aid\/CPR training at your church.<\/li>\n<li>Write thank you notes to first responders or other local heroes in your community.<\/li>\n<li>Initiate or support the Souper Bowl of Caring\u2122 or another resource drive (food, clothing, toiletries, etc.) to help those who do not have enough.<\/li>\n<li>Throw a party.\u00a0 Bring enough soda!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Son of Mary and Son of God, come into our lives and turn our water into wine, our worries into wonders, our emergencies into blessings, our love into action, our scarcity into abundance, our stories into signs of your goodness, and our struggles into joy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brian Hiortdahl, West Hills, CA Warm-up Question Who is your hero?
