King George loses the colonies \u2013 repent!\u00a0 Hitler rises in Europe \u2013 looks like it\u2019s the antichrist!\u00a0 Y2K (you\u2019ll have to explain this one) \u2013 we\u2019re all going to die!<\/p>\n<p>To counter the hysteria, think of the camp song, \u201cI\u2019ve Been Redeemed\u201d\u00a0 (Versions vary):<\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019ve been redeemed . . . I\u2019ve been redeemed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>By the blood of the Jesus . . .by the blood of the Jesus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019ve been set free . . . I\u2019ve been set free.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>By the blood of the Lamb . . . by the blood of the Lamb.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>How good it is . . . how good it is.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>How sweet it is . . . how sweet it is.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To know that I\u2019m a child of God, and I\u2019ve been washed as clean as snow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ooo \u2013 oo \u2013 ooo-oo.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This simple call and response song should be a mantra that we keep on the tips of our tongues.\u00a0 As Lutherans, we do not need to obsess about the end seen in obscure signs.\u00a0 We need to be willing to take action.\u00a0 We need to be God\u2019s hands at work in the world.\u00a0 Don\u2019t watch the fire.\u00a0 Organize and put it out.\u00a0 Feed the homeless.\u00a0 Go on a mission trip.\u00a0 Make friends with some with different beliefs and learn to talk about those differences with dignity and respect.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard Professor, Dr. Steven Pinker, preaches with zeal a message that exclaims, \u201cIt\u2019s not that bad out there!\u201d\u00a0 According to Pinker, American homicide rates are down from 20 years ago.\u00a0 Fewer of us live in poverty.\u00a0 Sulfur dioxide emissions are down, too. In 2018, 238 Western Europeans dies in terrorist attacks \u2013 440 people died in 1998.\u00a0\u00a0 What\u2019s the take-away?\u00a0 Every age is a victim of pessimism and fixates on the negative.\u00a0 Jesus knew it and warns us to \u201cnot be weighed down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Worries are a trap.\u00a0 They can build anxiety, foster division and lead to isolation.\u00a0 Jesus is with us.\u00a0 He is our redemption.\u00a0 Go with a light heart and be a positive force of change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Earthquakes, fires and civil unrest!\u00a0 Why do you think the network news leads with bad news and closes with good news?<\/li>\n<li>Why do rumors of salacious trouble spread faster that stories of triumph and joy?<\/li>\n<li>What is the good news in your community?\u00a0 What is the good news in the world?<\/li>\n<li>What local causes can you serve to better your community?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Either as a large group or in small groups, brainstorm on large sheets of paper lists of comic book heroes with their positive and negative traits.\u00a0 Discuss results.\u00a0 In round two, allow students to use phones to brainstorm lists of historic heroes with their positive and negative traits \u2013 Winston Churchill, Martin Luther, Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher . . .
