You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Pharisees worked hard to transform the ordinary into the sacred, to make everything in daily life holy and acceptable to God.\u00a0 This involved rituals to change \u201cunclean\u201d into \u201cclean\u201d and common into special.\u00a0 One of many ways they did this was with carefully prescribed washings of utensils and hands before eating, which was only to be shared with others who were faithful enough to eat only \u201cclean\u201d foods prepared and served in \u201cclean\u201d vessels.\u00a0 At its best, this practice was a careful way of honoring God; at its worst, it divided people, diminishing some while making others feel superior. \u00a0Jesus sees and names a sad hypocrisy beneath the shiny exterior of this practice.\u00a0 Clean hands don\u2019t excuse dirty hearts.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, Jesus turns everyone\u2019s thinking inside out:\u00a0 <em>Listen to me, all of you, and understand:\u00a0 there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.\u00a0 <\/em>The real threats to our relationship status with God aren\u2019t germs or forbidden foods or other people\u2019s opinions or anything else outside of us; the real threats are the sins festering in the heart that leak out of us in unholy words and actions.\u00a0 (Jesus pushes this so far with his disciples that some verses are omitted from polite worship\u2026read and visualize verses 18 &amp; 19!)\u00a0 Washing the dishes properly to be right with God is like trying to fight cancer by wearing nicer clothes\u2014or like trying to improve my own life by controlling someone else\u2019s behavior.\u00a0 It\u2019s not really getting at the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Centuries before this gospel episode, God told Samuel:\u00a0 <em>the L<\/em><em>ORD <\/em><em>does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the L<\/em><em>ORD <\/em><em>looks on the heart (1 Samuel\u00a0 16:7). <\/em>That\u2019s where Jesus is focused.\u00a0 And as the scientists at MIT can tell you, it is much easier to track and treat things outside the human body than inside it.<\/p>\n<p>But remember the good news from recent readings in John 6!\u00a0 We already have an ingestible treatment for the diseases of the human heart \u2013 the flesh and blood of Christ in the common looking bread and wine of Holy Communion.\u00a0 Through our mouths (and also ears), God gets inside us to diagnose and overcome the real threats to our well-being.\u00a0 Jesus turns what everyone assumed completely inside out:\u00a0 we are most threatened by what is inside coming out, and we are healed and saved by what is outside going in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss this quote from Jaroslav Pelikan: \u201cTradition is the living faith of the dead.\u00a0 Traditionalism is the dead faith of the living.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>What religious traditions or practices draw you closer to God?\u00a0\u00a0 Which ones get in the way?<\/li>\n<li>Identify some well-intentioned ideas that end up separating and hurting people.<\/li>\n<li>Where do you see hypocrisy in yourself?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spend time in silent prayer as a group, with each person quietly examining her\/his own heart.\u00a0 Silently invite Jesus to heal and cleanse specific things inside you.<\/li>\n<li>Invite a medical professional to talk about new technologies and how they can either bless or backfire.\u00a0 Are there parallels in church life?<\/li>\n<li>As a group, identify one Christian practice that annoys you or seems stupid.\u00a0 Research and learn about how it started and the good intentions originally behind it.<\/li>\n<li>Write a thank you note to the people in your church who prepare Communion \u2013 and always in clean cups<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wise and loving Jesus, enter our hearts and minds and bloodstreams.\u00a0 Heal what is unhealthy, cleanse what is dirty, remove what is harmful, mend what is broken, and strengthen all that is good, so that what comes out of us in words and actions is your love and grace.\u00a0 Amen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brian Hiortdahl, Overland Park, KS Warm-up Question What is inside you?
