{"id":6830,"date":"2018-05-22T07:12:06","date_gmt":"2018-05-22T12:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=6830"},"modified":"2018-05-18T10:26:34","modified_gmt":"2018-05-18T15:26:34","slug":"may-27-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/may-27-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"May 27, 2018&#8211;How Do You Know?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Scott Mims, Virginia Beach, VA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When it comes to your faith, who have been some of the most important people in your life?<\/li>\n<li>What about them has made such a difference?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How Do You Know?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1651 a London tailor named John Reeve, claiming to have received a special message from God, started a small Protestant sect along with his cousin and group spokesman, Lodowicke Muggleton. \u00a0They were known as the Muggletonians, and a recent online <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/2018\/05\/muggletonians-maps-cosmos-anti-science\/\">article from National Geographic<\/a> outlines how this staunchly anti-scientific group mapped the cosmos.<\/p>\n<p>Against all evidence to the contrary, the Muggletonians insisted that the Earth was the center of the universe around which the sun, moon, planets and stars revolve. They based their views on a literal reading of the Bible, and yet now, thanks to the knowledge we have gained through scientific inquiry and space-age technology, we have a vastly different, more accurate picture of the universe.\u00a0 Among other things, this story highlights what remains a lively debate between faith and science, especially when it comes to the question, how do we \u201cknow\u201d what is real and true.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How does science help us to know about our world?\u00a0 What sorts of questions do you think are best answered by a scientific approach?<\/li>\n<li>What kinds of questions are best answered by faith and Scripture?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think one of these approaches is more true than the other? Why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>How do we come to really know another person? You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-912993580.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6843 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-912993580-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-912993580-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-912993580-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-912993580-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-912993580-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-912993580-250x250.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-912993580-350x350.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-912993580.jpg 1732w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it is easy to forget that there is more to the third chapter of John than verse 16.\u00a0 Few verses are as well known or have such wide appeal, and that can make it difficult to really \u201chear\u201d the rest of this reading, because, like gravity, John 3:16 pulls us forward.\u00a0 Yet, this week is Holy Trinity Sunday, so what might this passage say to us about who God is?<\/p>\n<p>For starters, it is helpful to begin \u201cin the beginning\u201d with the Prologue to John\u2019s gospel account.\u00a0 Just as John 3:16 is a summary of the \u201cgood news,\u201d the first 18 verses in chapter 1 are John\u2019s summary of what is about to unfold.\u00a0 Here it is, for instance, that we hear of the living Word who existed with God before even time.\u00a0 \u201cAll things came into being through him,\u201d John says.\u00a0 This Word then \u201cbecame flesh and lived among us\u201d in the person of Jesus of Nazareth.\u00a0 He is, as John tells us, \u201cGod the only Son\u201d who is close to the Father\u2019s heart, and who makes the Father known.<\/p>\n<p>Having the Prologue in view, we are ready to listen to Jesus\u2019 conversation with Nicodemus in John 3.\u00a0 Nicodemus, a Pharisee and Jewish leader, comes to Jesus secretly one night seeking greater understanding of who Jesus is and what he is about.\u00a0 \u201cRabbi,\u201d he says, \u201cwe know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.\u201d\u00a0 The great irony here is that Jesus has indeed \u201ccome from God,\u201d but in a way that transcends what Nicodemus has in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Jesus\u2019 response to Nicodemus goes beyond his expectations.\u00a0 What emerges is a glimpse of the role of the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, in the double-sided new birth of baptism.\u00a0 For baptism both brings us into the visible community of Jesus\u2019 followers and is the means through which we receive the new life of the Spirit welling.\u00a0 As Jesus explains to Nicodemus, without being born from above (or born anew), one cannot even see God\u2019s kingdom, let alone get into it.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, it isn\u2019t simply that this gift of new birth is being poured out upon one group of people \u2013 it isn\u2019t just for the children of Israel, for example.\u00a0 \u201cThe wind (or the Spirit) blows where it chooses,\u201d Jesus says in verse 8. You cannot lock the Holy Spirit up.\u00a0 As last week\u2019s celebration of Pentecost, and indeed the whole book of Acts, demonstrates, no one human family, tribe, organization, or nation can contain the Holy Spirit; the Spirit moves and works faith where and when the Spirit wills.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, to Nicodemus\u2019 continued puzzlement, Jesus returns to the question of who he truly is and how he knows these things he is talking about.\u00a0 Here again, John 1:1-2 and 1:18 are in the background.\u00a0 Pointing Nicodemus back to the story of the bronze serpent in Numbers 21:1-9, Jesus then points him forward to the cross.\u00a0 The cross, an instrument of torture and death, will become both the greatest display of the Father\u2019s love for the world, and the means by which the Son will bring the world, and us, salvation and new life.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to remember that, historically, the doctrine of the Holy Trinity did not take shape as the result of logical deductions about an esoteric, abstract truth.\u00a0 Rather, our faith in a triune God is rooted in the concrete experience of a God who loves and heals us in a triune way. Christians come to \u201cknow\u201d God as Trinity in the relational experience of how God is for us.\u00a0 This week we get a glimpse of this as the work of the whole Trinity is displayed in John 3:\u00a0 God the Father, Creator of all, sends the Son into the world. Jesus, the Son of God and Redeemer, is lifted up on the cross for the sake of the world. The Spirit of God, the Sanctifier, blows through our lives bringing new life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When you hear \u201cthe Holy Trinity,\u201d what do you think of? How would you explain the Trinity to a friend? How has the Trinity been explained to you?<\/li>\n<li>When it comes to trying to understand the Trinity, do you think \u201c<em>mystery\u201d<\/em> is a helpful idea? Mystery as in, &#8220;The Trinity is something we cannot fully understand and we are okay with that.&#8221; Are you comfortable with mystery? Why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>Look over Martin Luther\u2019s explanation of the Apostles\u2019 Creed in the <em>Small Catechism. <\/em>Make a list of the ways in which God is \u201cfor us\u201d as Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier.
