{"id":6814,"date":"2018-05-15T08:01:50","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T13:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=6814"},"modified":"2018-05-08T17:36:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-08T22:36:00","slug":"may-20-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/may-20-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"May 20, 2018&#8211;Spirit of Truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dennis Sepper, Burnsville, MN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How can you tell if someone is telling you the truth?<\/p>\n<p><b>Spirit of Truth<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Nathan Zohner, a 14-year-old student at Eagle Rock Junior High School won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair with his project on Dihydrogen Monoxide.\u00a0 Nathan urged 50 of his peers to sign a petition demanding strict control or the total elimination of the chemical Dihydrogen Monoxide because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It can cause excessive sweating and vomiting.<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-904150194.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6828 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-904150194-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-904150194-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-904150194-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-904150194-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-904150194-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-904150194-525x350.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>It is a major component of acid rain.<\/li>\n<li>It can cause severe burns in its gaseous state.<\/li>\n<li>Accidental inhalation can kill you.<\/li>\n<li>It contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.<\/li>\n<li>It decreases the effectiveness of automobile brakes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>43 of his peers said yes and signed the petition.\u00a0 6 were undecided.\u00a0 And one knew that the so-called dangerous chemical is\u2026<strong><em>water<\/em><\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>It turns out what Nathan was really testing was how gullible we all can be to what we call today \u201cfake news\u201d.\u00a0 86% of Nathan\u2019s classmates just accepted what Nathan was saying and believed that \u201cwater\u201d was a threat to humankind.\u00a0 Following a report on Nathan\u2019s project, an enterprising person set up a \u201cBan DHMO\u201d website and was evening selling T-shirts for the cause (the website still exists @ DHMO.org)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever believed something to be true but later found out it wasn\u2019t?\u00a0 How did you find out?\u00a0 How did it make you feel?<\/li>\n<li>Going back to the warm-up question, how do you know if something you read or hear is true?\u00a0 What resources can you use to find out the truth of something?<\/li>\n<li>Is there more to truth than \u201cthe cold, hard facts\u201d?\u00a0 Can a story be \u201ctrue\u201d in regard to what it says about human nature or even God?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Day of Pentecost<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=392806655\">Acts 2:1-21<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=392806694\">Ezekiel 37:1-14<\/a> (alternate)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=392806733\">Romans 8:22-27<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=392806846\">John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On this Pentecost Sunday we remember and celebrate the giving of the Holy Spirit to the disciples, as promised by Jesus.\u00a0 In this section of John\u2019s Gospel, the Holy Spirit is called the \u201cAdvocate\u201d and the \u201cSpirit of truth\u201d (see John 15:26 and John 16:13).\u00a0 Jesus makes the promise that the Spirit of truth will guide us into the way of truth.\u00a0 However, as we explored above, we might ask the question \u201cwhat is truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the Gospel, John gives us some answers to that question.\u00a0 First, John says that <strong>Jesus<\/strong> is the truth (Jesus is full of grace and truth, John 1:14 and Jesus states \u201cI am the way, the truth and the life,\u201d John 14:6.)\u00a0 John also say that the <strong>Gospel<\/strong> Jesus proclaims is the truth (John 8:31-32).<\/p>\n<p>What that means for us today is that in baptism we are given the gift of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 This is the same Spirit of truth that Jesus speaks of in this week\u2019s gospel text.\u00a0 We take Jesus at his word that the Holy Spirit will guide us in the way of truth.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Luther had another way of saying this in his Small Catechism explanation of the Third Article of the Apostles\u2019 Creed when he wrote, \u201cI believe that I cannot by my own understanding or strength believe in Jesus Christ my Lord, or come to him, but the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, made me holy and kept me in true faith\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Luther goes on to say how the Holy Spirit also calls and gathers the community of faith\u2026the Church.\u00a0 The Spirit of truth is not just present in us as individuals but as a community, as the Church.\u00a0 So while we have the ability to consider the truth of something compared to Jesus and to what Jesus proclaimed and taught, so the community of faith has that ability too.<\/p>\n<p>One final point about this issue of truth\u2026in the Gospel of John, and in the whole New Testament really, truth demands action.\u00a0 The truth of Jesus calls us to be witnesses to Jesus and to the Gospel in the world.\u00a0 Or to put it another way, we do not just <em>know<\/em> the truth, but the truth sets us free to <em>action<\/em>, witness, advocacy and service in the world (See John 8:32).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are some of the gospel truths you hold dear in your faith journey?\u00a0 How does that truth set you free?<\/li>\n<li>What truths have your congregation or community of faith claimed as the reason for their ministry and mission; evangelism, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, working with prisons (and there are many more)?\u00a0 How did your congregation come to that decision?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is an old activity that would work well this week.\u00a0 It is called \u201cTwo Truths and a Lie\u201d and it goes like this:\u00a0 each person states two truths and one non-truth about their life and the others in the group must guess which statement is the false one.\u00a0 The purpose of the activity, not unlike Nathan Zohner\u2019s experiment, is to show us how hard it is sometimes to figure out truth from falsehoods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spirit of Truth, on this occasion of Jesus giving you as a gift to us and the Church, we ask that you remind us that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.\u00a0 By your power let us clearly hear the truth of the Gospel and Jesus\u2019 teaching.\u00a0 Move us to action as witnesses, disciples, and advocates in our own day.\u00a0 We ask this in name of Jesus, our Savior.\u00a0 Amen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dennis Sepper, Burnsville, MN Warm-up Question How can you tell if someone is telling you the truth?
