{"id":6800,"date":"2018-05-08T07:20:58","date_gmt":"2018-05-08T12:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=6800"},"modified":"2018-05-08T14:20:37","modified_gmt":"2018-05-08T19:20:37","slug":"may-13-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/may-13-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"May 13, 2018&#8211;A Lonely Lot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Leslie Scanlon, Chesapeake, VA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tell about a time this week you felt lonely.\u00a0 Tell\u00a0 about a time this week you felt part of a group.<\/p>\n<p><em>Think of it like \u201chigh\/low,\u201d \u201crose\/thorn,\u201d \u201cmountain top\/valley,\u201d or whatever metaphor you like to use.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Lonely Lot<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the rise of technologies that claim to facilitate communication, you might think that we would feel more connected than people in decades and centuries past.\u00a0 However, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2018\/05\/01\/606588504\/americans-are-a-lonely-lot-and-young-people-bear-the-heaviest-burden\">article recently posted by NPR<\/a> reports that a survey conducted by the health insurance company Cigna concluded that \u201cAmericans are a lonely lot\u201d with over 50% of those surveyed responding, \u201cthat they feel alone or left out always or sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UCLA Loneliness Scale uses a series of statements and a formula to quantify someone\u2019s sense of loneliness and was used in the survey to determine that many Americans do not feel truly connected to those with whom they are in relationship.\u00a0 Loneliness is not just an \u201cemotional\u201d issue, but can also negatively affect your physical health in a major way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-473292366.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6812 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-473292366-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-473292366-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-473292366-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-473292366-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-473292366-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/05\/iStock-473292366-525x350.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The survey results also suggest that the average sense of loneliness is progressively higher as you look at younger and younger generations. (<em>Note: those surveyed were all over 18 years of age.)<\/em> Some studies have reported a correlation between more screen time\/less face-to-face time and higher instances of depression and suicide, but the Cigna survey did not find enough evidence to blame social media for the generational trends.\u00a0 That might be because not all social media use is equal\u2014positive and negative personal interactions can happen on social media platforms, but they can also be used somewhat passively.\u00a0 Technology can aid in our relationships being built up, but can also be the means of breaking them down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What ways do you interact with people on a daily\/weekly basis <em>(outside of the obvious answer: school)?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>To what clubs, teams, and groups do you belong?<\/li>\n<li>How would you describe your use of social media <em>(active\/passive, regular\/occasional, etc.)<\/em>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Seventh Sunday of Easter<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=392271538\">Acts 1:15-17, 21-26<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=392271565\">1 John 5:9-13<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=392271594\">John 17:6-19<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the past two Sundays, the Gospels readings in John 15 have been from Jesus\u2019 final discourse to the disciples before his arrest, trial, death, and resurrection.\u00a0 This Sunday, we skip to chapter 17. Jesus is no longer talking to his disciples, but praying for them.<\/p>\n<p>In the repetitive, seemingly roundabout sentences characteristic of John\u2019s gospel, Jesus articulates in prayer to God (the Creator) that his followers are in fact God\u2019s followers, and that, although he is about to die, it does not change that fact that they are God\u2019s beloved children.<\/p>\n<p>In verse 11, Jesus prays for protection for his flock which he is about to physically leave behind.\u00a0 One of the reasons he worries for them is because they are going to remain \u201cin the world\u201d (v.11) without him, but \u201cthey do not belong to the world\u201d (v.16).<\/p>\n<p>This is not true just of those disciples who physically walked with Jesus, but is true of us too.\u00a0 We are \u201cin\u201d but not \u201cof<strong>\u201d<\/strong> this world.\u00a0 We are called to take part in the aspects of life that this world makes possible, but we are called to do so in a way that gives glory to God.\u00a0 We are not called to tuck ourselves away and interact with only those who believe, worship, and look like us; we are called to be one<em> (as Jesus talks about in verse 11)<\/em>.\u00a0 That is not to say that everyone in the church is always going to agree 100% of the time on every topic.\u00a0 However, there is a way to remain connected and in relationship, despite our disagreements.\u00a0 We do all of this as part of keeping God\u2019s word and making God\u2019s name known.<\/p>\n<p>This is not always easy work.\u00a0 Jesus knew this, and that is why he prayed that God would protect, teach, and lead his disciples then and us now.\u00a0 As people of faith, we are called to not be \u201cof\u201d the world\u2014giving into every whim we might have or striving to be what society tells us we should be.\u00a0 We are sent out into the world to do God\u2019s work with our hands\u2026as ONE people of God, ONE flock, ONE church.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is one example of how you are (or someone you know is) \u201cin\u201d but not \u201cof\u201d the world?<\/li>\n<li>What can get in the way of the church being \u201cone\u201d?<\/li>\n<li>You have been given the Word of God; what is God sending you out into the world to do? <em>(be as specific as possible)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make a plan of how your youth group can work together (as ONE) to do God\u2019s work in the world\u2026and get started. <em>SMART goals (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SMART_criteria\"><em>https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SMART_criteria<\/em><\/a><em>) are helpful when working to create a concrete and achievable plan.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Brainstorm ideas about how to make your youth group, church, or other faith-based group more \u201cone.\u201d What is getting in the way of unity in the midst of diversity?\u00a0 How can you overcome those obstacles?<\/li>\n<li>Play a group-building game to help build \u201coneness\u201d in your group. <em>There are lots of ideas on Pinterest and Youth Ministry blogs.\u00a0 When choosing, keep in mind the participants\u2019 levels of comfort with physical contact.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gracious and loving God, you have given us so much\u2014your Word, life, and each other\u2014for that we are thankful.\u00a0 Thank you for being with us in our time together and we ask that you would continue to be with us and protect as we go out into the world this week.\u00a0 Help us to remember that we are never alone.
