{"id":6704,"date":"2018-03-13T07:23:39","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T12:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=6704"},"modified":"2018-03-07T14:52:35","modified_gmt":"2018-03-07T19:52:35","slug":"march-18-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/march-18-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"March 18, 2018&#8211;The Weakness of God"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dave Dodson, Fort Walton Beach, FL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How is punishment decided in your household?\u00a0 Does the punishment fit the crime?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Weakness of God<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/03\/iStock-614840364.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6710 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/03\/iStock-614840364-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/03\/iStock-614840364-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/03\/iStock-614840364-768x597.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/03\/iStock-614840364-1024x796.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/03\/iStock-614840364-250x194.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/03\/iStock-614840364-450x350.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/03\/iStock-614840364.jpg 1964w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the 2018 Olympics ended with the Closing Ceremony, one country was given a reason to celebrate.\u00a0 On February 28<sup>th<\/sup>, the International Olympic Committee ( IOC), reinstated Russia as a country permitted to compete in Olympic competition.\u00a0 In the 2018 Winter Games, Russia had been prohibited from competition due to a doping scandal uncovered after the last Olympic Games.\u00a0 It came to light that widespread doping was promoted by coaches and officials in the Russian Olympic organization.\u00a0 As a result, no athletes were permitted to represent Russia or show the Russian flag or colors during the 2018 Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>On the day that Russia was reinstated, the Russian Olympic Committee breathed a sigh of relief.\u00a0 ROC president Alexander Zhukov called the period of the ban one of the \u201cmost challenging ones in Russian sports history\u201d and congratulated Russian athletes and fans for Russia\u2019s return as a \u201cfull-fledged member of the Olympic family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 Olympics were not without some drama from Russian athletes, however.\u00a0 Two Russian athletes (competing independently from Russia) tested positive for banned substances.\u00a0 One of the two was even forced to return a bronze medal due to the doping.\u00a0 The IOC, however, ruled that these two doping incidents were done by the individuals on their own.\u00a0 The Russian Olympic Committee was considered innocent.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone was happy with this decision.\u00a0 US lawyer Jim Walden complained that the IOC was \u201c[treating] Russia and its glaring acts of aggression with cowardice and appeasement.\u201d\u00a0 Furthermore, Walden predicted that the IOC\u2019s reinstatement of Russia would cause Russia to resort to doping again.\u00a0 As Walden claimed, \u201cWeakness in the face of evil results in no good outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you think that Walden is correct in his claim about weakness?<\/li>\n<li>Consider the example of world leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Ghandi, and Nelson Mandela. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s Gospel reading sets us up for Good Friday.\u00a0 We know that as Lent progresses we grow closer and closer to the day on which we remember Jesus\u2019 death.\u00a0 In today\u2019s reading, Jesus foreshadows his death on the cross.\u00a0 Jesus knows that the time ahead will be hard.\u00a0 He alludes to his death in verse 24, and then admits his own inner turmoil in verse 27.\u00a0 \u201cMy soul is troubled,\u201d Jesus says, before he resolves to stand strong, for \u201cit is for this reason that I have come to this hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is passages like these in the gospels that lead\u00a0 some theologians to write about an astonishing interpretation of Scripture called \u201cthe weakness of God\u201d.\u00a0 As theologian and profession John Caputo notes, in <em>The Weakness of God: A Theology of the Event<\/em>, it is in passages like these that Jesus, God on earth, chooses to act in weakness.<\/p>\n<p>How could God be weak?\u00a0 The answer comes when we consider all of the power that God (and Jesus) has.\u00a0 Jesus was not intrinsically powerless to prevent his arrest and crucifixion.\u00a0 As we know well from Jesus\u2019 many miracles, he had power from God that he surely could have used to escape this fate.\u00a0 However, Jesus actively chose to be powerless in the situation.\u00a0 He allowed himself to be taken and killed.\u00a0 Jesus submitted, and chose to be weak.<\/p>\n<p>It cannot be true, then, that \u201cweakness in the face of evil results in no good outcomes\u201d.\u00a0 Jesus embraced weakness as the method by which he defeated evil once and for all.\u00a0 Weakness isn\u2019t worthlessness; it is the way in which you and I are saved!<\/p>\n<p>Caputo pointed this out in his theological works.\u00a0 \u201cThe powerless power of the kingdom prevails whenever the one is preferred to the ninety-nine,\u201d Caputo passionately writes, \u201cwhenever one loves one\u2019s enemies and hates one\u2019s father and mother while the world, which believes in power, counsels us to fend off our enemies and keep the circle of kin and kind, of family and friends, fortified and tightly drawn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Notice that Caputo\u2019s words put us at odds with what popular society considers admirable.\u00a0 The world tells us to be strong; Jesus tells us to make ourselves weak.\u00a0 The world says we should gather and use power; Jesus tells us that power comes from powerlessness.\u00a0 The world tells us to surround ourselves by those who can make us stronger; Jesus teaches us to value to the weak.<\/p>\n<p>In the coming weeks, as we see Jesus\u2019 inexorable march to the cross and his death on Good Friday, we do well to remember that Christians celebrate weakness \u2013 and that, indeed, we are saved by it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What attributes do we generally consider to be \u201cweak\u201d? Are there any of those that Christians should actually show?<\/li>\n<li>How does embracing weakness change how Christians act in society and politics?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Create a poster advertisement for a gym.\u00a0 Instead of promoting physical strength, however, try to promote the sort of weakness that we have discussed today.\u00a0 What sort of \u201cactivities\u201d would go on in a facility that promoted this sort of weakness?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heavenly Father, as we proceed through this Lenten season, we continue to humble ourselves as we strive to follow the footsteps of Jesus.\u00a0 Teach us, God, to be weak, so that we may stand with those who are marginalized in our world.\u00a0 Help us to learn every day to value the real strength that comes from walking with Jesus.\u00a0 In His name we pray, Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dave Dodson, Fort Walton Beach, FL \u00a0 Warm-up Question How is punishment decided in your household?\u00a0 Does the punishment fit the crime?
