You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This passage builds on the story immediately before it (see last week\u2019s Faith Lens) in which Jesus expels a demon from a man in the synagogue on the Sabbath.\u00a0 The crowd marvels in amazement:\u00a0 \u201cA new teaching\u2014with authority!\u201d\u00a0 In the biblical world\u2019s hierarchy, Jesus demonstrates that his cosmic power and status (\u201cauthority\u201d) are higher than that of demons, which are known to be higher than that of human beings.<\/p>\n<p>Next he moves to Simon\u2019s house, and cures his mother-in-law\u2019s fever.\u00a0 He thus restores her to her place of honor in the household as the chief hospitality authority, just as he restored the honor and social standing of the man in the synagogue.\u00a0 Read together, these stories reveal that Jesus heals in public and in private; a man and a woman; supernatural and natural illness.\u00a0 The kingdom of God that he proclaims is for everyone, as the next scenes illustrate.\u00a0 After the whole town crowded around him at sundown, Jesus tells his disciples that God is sending them to other towns too, beyond the edges of the little world they currently see.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that it is before sundown that Jesus heals Simon\u2019s mother-in-law\u2014a second healing on the Sabbath.\u00a0 This will soon get Jesus in trouble.\u00a0 It is one of many religious rules he breaks:\u00a0 working on Sabbath, touching a woman he does not know, touching the unclean, engaging Gentiles and tax collectors and demoniacs and other \u201csinners\u201d assumed to be beyond the edges of God\u2019s favor.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 behavior suggests that the God no one can see cares more about people\u2019s wellbeing than about their social position or obedience to religious rules.\u00a0 This is completely revolutionary.\u00a0 This is a brand new breakthrough.\u00a0 This is cutting edge, space age religion and lifestyle.\u00a0 This is a whole new way of seeing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In what ways does the church of Jesus showcase the amazing kingdom he announces and demonstrates in his words and deeds?\u00a0 How does the church obscure or hide it?<\/li>\n<li>What about Jesus excites you?\u00a0 What about him scares you?<\/li>\n<li>Who are the people we don\u2019t see?<\/li>\n<li>Who are the people who need their dignity and social standing restored?\u00a0 What we can do in Jesus\u2019 name to help and heal them?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Begin your study with participants blindfolded.\u00a0 (Please be nice\u2014don\u2019t rearrange the furniture!)\u00a0 How does that change the experience?\u00a0 What is it like being in the world without sight?<\/li>\n<li>Learn about the health ministry in your congregation or another church, or interview a medical professional.\u00a0 What inspires them in their work?\u00a0 What frustrates them?\u00a0 How do they understand the stories of Jesus\u2019 healings?<\/li>\n<li>Organize a blood drive or a collection of eyeglasses for those in need.\u00a0 Intentionally reach out to include the wider community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Open our eyes, Lord God, to see your amazing kingdom at work near us, and open our hands and hearts to join Jesus in spreading your healing love to all the world.\u00a0 Amen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Brian Hiortdahl, Overland Park, KS \u00a0Warm-up Question What is the one thing you have received that changed your life the most?
