The date has been set for the royal wedding between Prince Harry of the United Kingdom and his fianc\u00e9, Meghan Markle!\u00a0 Many of you may already be aware of the upcoming royal marriage of Prince Harry, the younger brother of Prince William and grandson of the Queen of England, Elizabeth II.\u00a0 And if you are an aficionado of news about the British royalty, you might be aware that there are a few unique things about this upcoming wedding.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, Harry\u2019s bride-to-be isn\u2019t a British citizen.\u00a0 Meghan Markle is an American actress and humanitarian.\u00a0 But this isn\u2019t the only non-traditional aspect of the upcoming nuptials. The happy couple will be married on May 19<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 a Saturday.\u00a0 This is, believe it or not, a significant break from tradition.\u00a0 For decades, royal weddings have taken place on a weekday.\u00a0 The day is typically declared a bank holiday, and many British citizens are given the day off to celebrate the wedding.\u00a0 With the wedding taking place on a Saturday, this may not be the case this time.<\/p>\n<p>Another break with tradition came this past Christmas.\u00a0 Normally, the royal family celebrates at the Queen\u2019s private residence at Sandringham House in Norfolk.\u00a0 Traditionally, only members of royal families and their spouses are invited; fianc\u00e9s are not.\u00a0 This time, however, Prince Harry asked for and received the Queen\u2019s permission to bring Miss Markle to the family holiday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-639707524.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6631 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-639707524-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-639707524-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-639707524-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-639707524-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-639707524-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-639707524-524x350.jpg 524w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s likely, though, that several traditions about royal weddings will stay intact this year.\u00a0 One of those traditions includes the wedding rings to be created for the couple.\u00a0 Since 1923, members of the British royal family have all had their wedding rings made from the gold of the Clogau St. David gold mine in Wales.\u00a0 It\u2019s a particularly rare gold, especially now that the mine is closed, but the royal family has enough gold to make the rings for the upcoming wedding.\u00a0 In just a few months, Prince Harry might slip onto his new bride\u2019s finger a ring made of the same gold that graced the finger of his mother, his grandmother, and his great-grandmother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is special about traditions that your family observes?<\/li>\n<li>In the story above, what are your thoughts about the breaks from tradition?<\/li>\n<li>Would you like a traditional wedding if and when you get married, or would you prefer something non-traditional?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fourth Sunday after Epiphany<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<table class=\"ep-dp-dt\" style=\"height: 107px\" width=\"216\">\n<tbody>\n<tr id=\":6b.descript-row\">\n<th class=\"ep-dp-dt-th\"><\/th>\n<td class=\"ep-dp-dt-td\">\n<div id=\":6b.descript\" class=\"ep-dp-descript\">\n<div class=\"ui-sch\">\n<div class=\"ui-sch-schmedit\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=383217640\">Deuteronomy 18:15-20<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"ui-sch-schmedit\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=383217683\">1 Corinthians 8:1-13<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"ui-sch-schmedit\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=383217724\">Mark 1:21-28<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s reading from Mark tells the dramatic story of a possessed man shouting out in the synagogue as Jesus taught, followed by the exorcism of this \u201cunclean spirit\u201d by Jesus.\u00a0 That story, though, only highlights the real recurring theme of the passage: the authority of Jesus as something \u201cnew\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Twice in this passage, the people of Capernaum marvel to one another that Jesus is offering \u201ca new teaching\u201d which is taught \u201cwith authority\u201d.\u00a0 That isn\u2019t particularly surprising, of course.\u00a0 We know that Jesus is teaching with the authority of God, after all.\u00a0 But it might be surprising if we look a little bit deeper.\u00a0 In verse 22, the people note that Jesus \u201ctaught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Now that is strange indeed!\u00a0 The term \u201cscribes\u201d refers to a specific and very powerful group in Jewish society.\u00a0 The scribes were a group who intensely studied the Hebrew scriptures and other writings.\u00a0 They were experts in the law, and their services were used to prepare all sorts of legal documents \u2013 from marriage contracts to mortgages.\u00a0 The scribes were also some of the most influential interpreters of Jewish law, and some well-known scribes even had their own disciples!\u00a0 Scribes often formed a core of the Jewish council.\u00a0 It\u2019s possible, then, that the scribes exercised more power than even the Pharisees.\u00a0 Why, then, do the people say that when Jesus teaches with authority, he does so in a way <em>unlike<\/em> the scribes?<\/p>\n<p>To a first-century Jew, like the author of today\u2019s Gospel, it would make no sense to claim that the scribes lacked authority.\u00a0 It would, however, be perfectly correct to say that Jesus displayed a very different form of authority.<\/p>\n<p>The power of the scribes was based on their ability to interpret and apply Mosaic Law.\u00a0 Scribes were experts in the law that had been handed down for generations of Judaism.\u00a0 The scribes considered themselves guardians of the laws that God laid down after rescuing his people from Egypt and promising them a land and a nation.\u00a0 In this way, the scribes operated under the authority of God.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What made Jesus stand out was simple: He spoke and acted with an authority that belonged to him.\u00a0 He spoke as God himself, not merely as an interpreter of the Law.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly, this would have been shocking!\u00a0 It also affected different people in different ways.\u00a0 Some were prepared to recognize God in these new words and this new voice.\u00a0 They responded to the teachings of Jesus and were receptive to his words.\u00a0 Others, however, were appalled at the break from the traditional authority of the scribes.\u00a0 To them, it didn\u2019t matter what Jesus had to say.\u00a0 They would not have accepted his authority.\u00a0 They let their traditions become more important than God\u2019s good news.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What traditions are important in your youth group and in your church?<\/li>\n<li>How can we tell the difference between a tradition that makes us more receptive to God\u2019s word and a tradition that distracts us from God\u2019s word?<\/li>\n<li>Is it possible for a good, meaningful tradition to turn into a distracting tradition?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Write a \u201ctravel guide\u201d for a visitor to your church, helping them understand the traditions and practices of your church.\u00a0 Assume this visitor had never attended a Christian church service before.\u00a0 Could you prepare a brochure to help them understand what to expect?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heavenly Father, thank you for your guidance and your loving care in all that we do.\u00a0 Thank you especially for your Word, given to us through your Son Jesus.\u00a0 Help us always to recognize those words and deeds that help us grow in our faith, and teach us to find new ways to grow in our love for you and for one another.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name we pray, amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Dodson, Ft.
