{"id":6603,"date":"2018-01-09T07:52:33","date_gmt":"2018-01-09T12:52:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=6603"},"modified":"2018-01-03T12:29:04","modified_gmt":"2018-01-03T17:29:04","slug":"january-14-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/january-14-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"January 14, 2018&#8211;From Small Beginnings Come Great Things"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dennis Sepper, Burnsville, MN<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Can you name one famous person (or more) who came from your hometown?<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Small Beginnings Come Great Things<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Can anything good come out of Swartekill, New York?\u00a0 That was the birthplace of Isabella Baumfree who became known as Sojourner Truth.\u00a0 Sojourner Truth was sold into slavery at the age of nine for $100, which included a flock of sheep.\u00a0 Later she escaped with her infant daughter and went on to be a prominent abolitionist and an advocate for women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<p>Can anything good come out of Hodgenville, Kentucky?\u00a0 On February 12, 1809 Abraham Lincoln was born there.\u00a0 Abraham\u2019s father was a determined pioneer who worked the land.\u00a0 The family was forced to move several times eventually ending up in Illinois.\u00a0 Lincoln was elected to the state government of Illinois and then as the 16<sup>th<\/sup> President of the United States.\u00a0 President Lincoln is best known for the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the slaves in the north and for his Gettysburg Address where he declared that the United States was \u201cdedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Can anything good come out of Tuskegee, Alabama?\u00a0 Rosa Parks was born there in 1913.\u00a0 One day, weary from work, Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery Alabama bus.\u00a0 Rosa Parks was arrested and her act of defiance sparked the Montgomery bus boycott.\u00a0 Participating in that boycott was a preacher by the name of Martin Luther King Jr whose day we celebrate this weekend and Monday, January 15<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>So often our perceptions and geographical prejudices can make us believe that nothing good can come out of certain towns, regions of our country or the world.\u00a0 However, there are hundreds upon hundreds of examples of people being called by God to change society and the world.\u00a0 The vast majority of them come from places we\u2019ve never heard of or believe to be a place which could not produce a world changing personality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever underestimated the abilities of someone because of where they were born or based on what their parent did for a living?\u00a0 Why do you think that happens?<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever experienced someone underestimating you because of where you are from, or what high school you attend, or what your parents do for a living?\u00a0 How did that make you feel?<\/li>\n<li>What can we do to stop ourselves from judging people without really knowing them?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table class=\"ep-dp-dt\" style=\"height: 81px\" width=\"212\">\n<tbody>\n<tr id=\":29.descript-row\">\n<th class=\"ep-dp-dt-th\"><\/th>\n<td class=\"ep-dp-dt-td\">\n<div id=\":29.descript\" class=\"ep-dp-descript\">\n<div class=\"ui-sch\">\n<div class=\"ui-sch-schmedit\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=381999795\">1 Samuel 3:1-10 [11-20]<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"ui-sch-schmedit\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=381999833\">1 Corinthians 6:12-20<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"ui-sch-schmedit\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=381999889\"> John 1:43-51<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s gospel text Nathanael is a bit like you and me (if we are honest with ourselves).\u00a0 Philip had an encounter with Jesus and had answered Jesus\u2019 call to \u201cfollow me\u201d.\u00a0 Excited that Jesus was the Messiah of God, Philip shared the news with his friend Nathanael.\u00a0 However when Philip shared that the Messiah was \u201cJesus, son of Joseph from Nazareth\u201d (vs 45) Nathanael was not so sure.\u00a0 In essence Nathanael responded by saying \u201cNazareth?\u00a0 Really?\u00a0 Can anything good come out of Nowheresville?\u00a0 Son of Joseph, the carpenter?\u00a0 Really?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-660768786.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6609 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-660768786-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-660768786-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-660768786-768x535.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-660768786-1024x714.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-660768786-250x174.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/iStock-660768786-502x350.jpg 502w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nathanael\u2019s sight was obscured by the expectation that the Messiah should come from an important city like Jerusalem and from an important family.\u00a0 How else would the world take notice of this Messiah?\u00a0 What kind of political power would Jesus have coming from such a small town?\u00a0 But let\u2019s give Nathanael some credit; when Philip invited him to \u201ccome and see\u201d Nathanael went to see and meet Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>What happened in verses 47-48 we can\u2019t be sure.\u00a0 Perhaps Nathanael was doing something under that fig tree that caused Jesus to say \u201cHere is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!\u201d\u00a0 Whatever happened, once Nathanael encounters Jesus, face to face, his opinion of Jesus and where Jesus came from changed radically.\u00a0 Nathanael becomes the first disciple to recognize Jesus as the Child of God and King of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Inviting Nathanael to come and see Jesus for himself was the best thing Philip could have done. So often our misconceptions about people fade once we meet them and engage them.\u00a0 It is in that relationship that we come to see people for who they really are and what their lives are really about.\u00a0 As followers of Jesus we are called to welcome all people and treat them with compassion, mercy and love.\u00a0 Further Jesus teaches us to lift up the downtrodden and let each person know that they are loved and valued by God.\u00a0 This Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend is an appropriate time for us to remember and recommit ourselves to these specific teachings of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever had your opinion of someone change once you met them face to face?\u00a0 What happened?\u00a0 What caused the change?<\/li>\n<li>Think about who invited you to come and see Jesus. \u00a0Was it your parents?\u00a0\u00a0 A friend?\u00a0 Your Pastor?\u00a0 How did they put out that invitation?\u00a0 What happened when you heard the call to come and see?<\/li>\n<li>Has your experience of who Jesus is changed as you have grown in faith or read Scripture?\u00a0 In what way?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Think of someone you admire and google their name.\u00a0 Where were they born?\u00a0 What was their background growing up?\u00a0 Share what you learn with others in your group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jesus, understanding Savior, send your Holy Spirit upon us that we may see others through your eyes and come to know them for whom they are called to be.\u00a0 As your faithful disciples may we be lights to the nations inviting all we meet to come and see you and there to find acceptance, forgiveness and hope.\u00a0 We ask this in your most holy name.\u00a0 Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dennis Sepper, Burnsville, MN \u00a0 Warm-up Question Can you name one famous person (or more) who came from your hometown?
