C.\u00a0 You likely know it as America\u2019s capital and the place where our national government has its home.\u00a0 Many visit to see the Smithsonian, explore the monuments, and go to plays or sports events.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/12\/iStock-618526036.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6582 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/12\/iStock-618526036-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/12\/iStock-618526036-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/12\/iStock-618526036-768x470.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/12\/iStock-618526036-1024x627.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/12\/iStock-618526036-250x153.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/12\/iStock-618526036-572x350.jpg 572w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, not as well known is the large population of people who continue to live in parks, shelters, or moving back and forth between housing and the streets.\u00a0 \u00a0Thankfully, according to the DC Department of Human Services, the number of adults and children who experience homelessness has dropped 34% from 2009 to 2017.\u00a0 One night earlier this year, there were 7,473 people unsheltered in an emergency shelter or in a transitional housing facility.<\/p>\n<p>Recently youth from our community met two men in Washington D.C. who help lead an organization called Teens Opposing Poverty.\u00a0 They told stories of living on streets for 10-12 years each. A small number of teenagers chose not to ignore them.\u00a0 The teens fed them, brought clean, white socks, and got to know them as human beings.\u00a0 They blessed them and the new homeless friends blessed back.<\/p>\n<p>One day the teens asked \u201cHow can this be that you have to live on the streets and under benches?\u201d\u00a0 Hearing answers, these youth continued to stick around, offering hope and small steps toward living fuller lives. \u00a0\u00a0As a result of the blessing from teenagers who loved them, these two men are both off the streets. They are employed and have families.\u00a0 They are proud to lead groups of teenagers through Teen Opposing Poverty.\u00a0 Youth get to know others who live on the streets trapped in the cycle of poverty.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to check out Teens Opposing Poverty at http:\/\/teensopposingpoverty.org. \u00a0Their mission is to\u00a0empower youth to meet physical needs and offer hope, friendship, opportunity and encouragement to the poor, not just as an annual event, but as a regular part of their lives.\u00a0 They know that teenagers have a unique voice give from God to transform lives!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you know anyone who is affected by homelessness? Why do people in our country not have adequate shelter, food, or employment?<\/li>\n<li>How is daily life different for those who live on streets each day?<\/li>\n<li>What are some unique gifts that teenagers have to help transform poverty? You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can this be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a reasonable question which Mary asks.\u00a0 As this story begins in Luke we hear conversation between a messenger of God named Gabriel and a virgin whose name is Mary.\u00a0 The angel messenger finds Mary in Nazareth and says, \u201cDo not be afraid.\u201d\u00a0 Mary is perplexed by the words of this messenger.<\/p>\n<p>Next, Gabriel tells Mary, that although she is an unwed virgin, her soon to be born son Jesus \u201cwill be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David.\u00a0 He will reign and his reign will be forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is an unexpected blessing from Gabriel to Mary!\u00a0 Mary is blessed before she says yes.<\/p>\n<p>To understand the surprising power of this blessing it helps to know that she would have been familiar with the titles being given to her unborn son.\u00a0\u00a0 The titles now given to Jesus (\u201cSon of God,\u201d \u201cSavior of the World,\u201d and \u201cMessiah\/Christ\u201d) were previously given to Caesar.\u00a0 Before Jesus was conceived, Caesar Augustus had already been proclaimed by Roman imperial theology as \u201cSon of God\u201d and \u201cSavior of the World.\u201d\u00a0 Mary lives in the middle of the powerful Pax Romana reign where Caesar is given these titles and everyone knows them just as we might know the name of a president or king today.\u00a0 Imagine her surprise when this visiting angel proclaims that her soon to be born son is the actual ruler and king to be given these titles, and not only of this land, but of the whole world.<\/p>\n<p>Mary says, \u201cHow can this be?\u201d Indeed! \u00a0How CAN this be?!?<\/p>\n<p>The angel is persistent and says God the Most High and Holy Spirit will take over all of this.\u00a0 And, oh by the way, your cousin also quite unexpectedly will have a son too because with God nothing is impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Mary says, \u201cYes\u201d and honors the gift of bringing this Son of God into the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read the story again. What parts now get your attention?<\/li>\n<li>When have you, liked Mary, said, \u201cHow can this be?\u201d Was it in a moment like that of the teenagers in DC who encountered hurting lives and wanted to make a difference?\u00a0 Or was it a time when you received an unexpected blessing?\u00a0\u00a0 Share stories with each other.<\/li>\n<li>What messages do you think God is trying to communicate to the world now, in December 2017, as we practice Advent together and listen carefully to God? Mary responded with \u201cYes, I\u2019m a servant of God; let it come to me as you have said.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Share some responses to what you think God may be saying now to grow God\u2019s reign on earth today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pull out your phones and research local organizations which respond to those who encounter homelessness in some way. \u00a0\u00a0Perhaps find a place where food is given out and give food.\u00a0 Find a way to offer help to those in transitional or relief housing.\u00a0 See if there is some unmet need to which you can respond. \u00a0If you\u2019re on Christmas break today, take time to help in the next few days if needed.\u00a0 Perhaps you will find something in your community that grabs your attention when you ask \u201cHow can this be?\u201d Be alert for something that blesses you and invites you to respond.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have found a way to serve that fits your gifts, contact the leaders, schedule a time and show up and serve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>O God we, with your servant, Mary ask \u201cHow can this be?\u201d in a world that is filled both with crushing poverty and unexpected blessing.\u00a0 Help us to receive your messengers openly and be messengers of your great news and kingdom today.\u00a0 May we respond with \u201cyes\u201d to your gifts and serve humbly.\u00a0 Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bryan Jaster, Winchester, VA \u00a0 Warm-up Question What is something surprising you were asked to do in the past week?\u00a0 What did you do in response to being asked?
