{"id":6525,"date":"2017-11-21T07:49:48","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T12:49:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=6525"},"modified":"2017-11-15T11:51:45","modified_gmt":"2017-11-15T16:51:45","slug":"november-26-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/november-26-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"November 26, 2017&#8211;Doing What Comes Naturally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Chris Heavner, Clemson, SC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/11\/iStock-612646482.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6537 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/11\/iStock-612646482-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/11\/iStock-612646482-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/11\/iStock-612646482-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/11\/iStock-612646482-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/11\/iStock-612646482-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/11\/iStock-612646482-525x350.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Do you ever find yourself doing something a particular way and not really knowing why?\u00a0 (Like putting on one sock and then one shoe rather than putting on both socks then both shoes.)\u00a0 Athletes work to develop muscle memory.\u00a0 Is it possible to develop human interaction memory?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doing What Comes Naturally<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Jewish observance of Seder involves the young participants asking a series of questions.\u00a0 One of these is \u201cWe normally eat standing up.\u00a0 Why do we do eat this meal lying down?\u201d\u00a0 (The practice of lying down is to remind us of God\u2019s protection and thus our ability to be at leisure.)\u00a0 This instructional tool allows the elders to explain actions and their origins.<\/p>\n<p>Each of us has automatic responses to situations which come up with some regularity.\u00a0 We may (or may not) always take time to consider our response and how it has developed over time.<\/p>\n<p>What is our programed response when we see a homeless person?\u00a0 Do we have muscle memory which causes our feet to move us away from persons extending a beggar\u2019s cup?<\/p>\n<p>Pastors in my home Synod applauded the presenter at our conference, but shied away from his request for us to share stories about our visits to persons in prison.<\/p>\n<p>The world teaches us many lessons which are antithetical to the message of Jesus.\u00a0 Jesus was more concerned with caring for the other than with self-protection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How would you characterize your own \u201cmuscle memory\u201d when it comes to interactions with the hungry, the homeless, those in prison?<\/li>\n<li>Let\u2019s make it very clear that \u201cmuscle memory\u201d needs to be in place to protect the innocent from exploitation and abuse.\u00a0 There is no excuse for emotional, physical, or sexual abuse!\u00a0 How do we make sure that we don\u2019t over-react?\u00a0 Have we allowed the need for personal safety to justify our turning a blind eye to the needs of others?<\/li>\n<li>Caring for those naked or thirsty is a task which also falls to the systems and structures of our society.\u00a0 What might Christians say to policy makers about availability of health care and\/or protecting our sources of drinking water?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Christ the King Sunday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=377714480\">Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=377714515\">Ephesians 1:15-23<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=377714543\">Matthew 25:31-46<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The context for this passage is important.\u00a0 For several chapters, Jesus has been engaged in a discussion with or about those who occupy positions of leadership among the faithful.\u00a0 The scribes, the Pharisees, the Sadducees \u2013 all had come or sent their lackeys in an attempt to discredit Jesus and trap him in his words.\u00a0 No attempt had worked.\u00a0 Jesus consistently returns to the truth of God\u2019s word and the claim God\u2019s grace has upon our lives. When Jesus finishes this exchange, Matthew\u2019s gospel moves to the Passion Story.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 25:31-46 serves as the closing to a message which began with Jesus\u2019 Sermon on the Mount.\u00a0 \u201cBlessed\u201d are those whose natural reaction is to do what Jesus has done.<\/p>\n<p>Too often, this story is dissected as a means of determining whether one is a sheep or a goat.\u00a0 There is certainly this undertone to the exchange.\u00a0 The part of the story to which we might give greater attention is that members of neither group were aware of their action or inactivity.\u00a0 They were just doing what came naturally.\u00a0 To one group, it was muscle memory to help and to care for others.\u00a0 The other group had taken to heart lessons about self-advancement or self-protection.<\/p>\n<p>We miss the opportunity to grow in our discipleship when we use the examples Jesus lifts up as a way of deciding who is the saved and who is the damned, who are the blessed and who are the cursed.\u00a0 This story presents us with the opportunity to examine what resides in our hearts and gives rise to what we do with our hands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These are the appointed lessons for Christ the King Sunday.\u00a0 What does it mean, to label as our \u201cking\u201d the Christ whose concern repeatedly returns to those who live along the margins of our society?<\/li>\n<li>Can you share an exchange between yourself and someone who was hungry\/thirst\/naked\/in prison?<\/li>\n<li>How do we set and enforce prohibitions against abuse and exploitation, while avoiding being so fearful of others that we close our lives and shut our eyes to the needs of others?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop an elevator speech (this is a 45 second script which you rehearse) which can be used the next time you encounter someone asking you for money or food.\u00a0 Give your \u201cspeech\u201d to another member of your group, and allow them to critique.<\/li>\n<li>Ask your pastor if they have ever visited someone in prison.\u00a0 Take a simple survey of five church members, asking if they know anyone who is in prison.<\/li>\n<li>Talk to an athlete about muscle memory and discuss whether it might be possible to alter our social responses by practicing and rehearing different responses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Giving and loving God; open our eyes to the ways we interact with others and to the motivations which lie behind our actions.\u00a0 Help us to see and to care for the lost and forsaken, the abandoned and abused.
