You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Peter has just correctly identified Jesus as \u201cthe Messiah, the Son of the living God.\u201d\u00a0 This title comes with enormous expectations.\u00a0 Jesus then \u201csternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah\u201d and, as this week\u2019s reading opens, \u201cJesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering\u2026 and be killed, and on the third day be raised.\u201d\u00a0 The Messiah was expected to restore power and glory to Israel; being crucified (by Rome) is the complete and exact opposite of this.\u00a0 Peter tries to talk Jesus out of this nonsense and gets harshly scolded for it.\u00a0 God has other things in mind.<\/p>\n<p>As Jesus elaborates, he says something very difficult that resonates with Darko\u2019s story:\u00a0 \u201cFor those who want to save their life will lose it, and those lose their life for my sake will find it.\u00a0 For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life?\u201d\u00a0 The word \u201clife\u201d can also be translated \u201csoul\u201d\u2014one\u2019s truest self. Expectations and appearances can cloud our understanding of who we really are, and what God wants for us and from us.\u00a0 Getting there is often a difficult climb beginning with loss that feels like death, \u201clike Old Darko died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In our confirmation class, the pastor wrote on the board about twenty responses to the question:\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you and your parents hope for in your life?\u201d\u00a0 The list included answers like happiness, financial security, a home, family, good health and reputation\u2014the things usually associated with success.\u00a0 Then the pastor said, \u201cLet\u2019s evaluate Jesus on the cross.\u201d\u00a0 Every last item was eliminated; Jesus was a \u201cfailure\u201d on every count.\u00a0 A total messianic bust.<\/p>\n<p>Things are not always as they appear, the pastor explained.\u00a0 Maybe the antisocial nerd everyone considers a loser is a future CEO.\u00a0 Maybe the beautiful and popular student everyone admires is a lonely self-injurer.\u00a0 Success can be an impossible burden and failure freedom.\u00a0 The cross reminds us that God has other things in mind than we do, and the truth is usually deeper than the surface suggests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0How does Darko\u2019s story illustrate what Jesus is trying to teach his disciples?\u00a0 Where do you detect God\u2019s grace at work in his life?<\/li>\n<li>Who judges you, and how?\u00a0 Whom do you judge?\u00a0 How might you reconsider your evaluation of them?<\/li>\n<li>When have you experienced a loss that you later saw was the beginning of a blessing?<\/li>\n<li>What in you, or in your church, needs to die in order for you to live?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In your group, make your own list of hopes that you and your parents have for your life.\u00a0 Do any of these describe Jesus on the cross?\u00a0 Do these hopes enliven or threaten the soul\u2014are they human things or divine things?<\/li>\n<li>Identify a \u201cbust\u201d you know\u2014someone (or a population) considered a failure or a disappointment.\u00a0 Pray for them, write them an encouraging letter, and find a way to appreciate or serve them.<\/li>\n<li>Visit a monastery and share a prayer liturgy with the community there.\u00a0 Stay and talk afterward.\u00a0 What new perspectives do you get?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set our minds, Lord Jesus, on divine things.\u00a0 Show us the truth about ourselves and others and you.\u00a0 Empower us to shoulder our callings, and give us the courage to follow you through times of confusion and pain and loss to the joy of new life.\u00a0 Amen<\/p>\n<table class=\"ep-dp-dt\" style=\"height: 26px\" width=\"5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr id=\":3q.descript-row\">\n<th class=\"ep-dp-dt-th\"><\/th>\n<td class=\"ep-dp-dt-td\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brian Hiortdahl, Overland Park, KS \u00a0Warm-up Question What does success look like?
