{"id":6225,"date":"2017-04-11T08:16:24","date_gmt":"2017-04-11T13:16:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=6225"},"modified":"2017-04-04T11:54:13","modified_gmt":"2017-04-04T16:54:13","slug":"april-16-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/april-16-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"April 16, 2017&#8211;What Did You Expect?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dennis Sepper, Burnsville, MN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What did you expect when you got up this morning?\u00a0 Was it pretty much what you expect every morning?<\/li>\n<li>What affect do those expectations have on what you see, hear and experience?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What Did You Expect?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>February 3, 2017\u2014Sulphur, Oklahoma.\u00a0 A\u2019layah Robinson had a tough start to life.\u00a0 She and her two brothers were born to a mother who was a drug addict and placed in foster care.\u00a0 Once there, like many foster kids, they bounced from house to house with various foster families.\u00a0 A\u2019layah and her brothers had no real home and no one they felt they could trust.\u00a0 That was until A\u2019layah and her brothers were adopted by the Robinson family.<\/p>\n<p>With a real home and parents who loved her, A\u2019layah blossomed and flourished.\u00a0 Even though life was now secure and good one thing bothered her.\u00a0 A\u2019layah realized that while in foster care her brothers never had one toy that was their own.\u00a0 A\u2019layah decided she had to do something about that.\u00a0 So, with her parents blessing she started serving lemonade from a stand called \u201cLemonade for Love\u201d with the goal of raising enough money to provide a toy for each child in foster care in the state of Oklahoma.<\/p>\n<p>A\u2019layah\u2019s vision caught the imagination of many people, so many that between the lemonade stand, a Facebook following, and a GoFundMe page A\u2019layah now provides a string drawn backpack that contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, a blanket, a stuff bear toy (of course) and a bible so that each child in foster care\u00a0 \u201ccan feel special and learn about Jesus\u201d.\u00a0 A\u2019layah wants to share the love she feels from God and from her parents with as many children as she can.\u00a0 Oh, and did I mention that A\u2019layah is six years old.<\/p>\n<p>When young A\u2019layah experienced the love of God and Jesus through her parents and through her faith community, she was transformed from a child who had little hope and the prospect of an uncertain future to a young girl who couldn\u2019t help but share the Good News through her service to other foster children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What was the element that transformed A\u2019layah\u2019s life?<\/li>\n<li>Was A\u2019layah doing something super human or extraordinary or was she using ordinary things that were within her reach?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think A\u2019layah is transforming the lives of others because of the love she has to share?\u00a0 How?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Resurrection of Our Lord, Easter Day<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=358319531\">Acts 10:34-43<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=358319560\">Colossians 3:1-4<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=358319590\">Matthew 28:1-10<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=358319624\">John 20:1-18<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In both Gospel texts for today Mary Magdalene, either alone or with the other Mary, heads to the tomb of Jesus.\u00a0 There is no talk of anointing the body of Jesus with spices<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/04\/iStock-641309272.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6233 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/04\/iStock-641309272-300x143.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/04\/iStock-641309272-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/04\/iStock-641309272-768x367.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/04\/iStock-641309272-1024x489.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/04\/iStock-641309272-250x119.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/04\/iStock-641309272-700x334.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>as in Mark 16 and Luke 24, so there is no concern about moving the stone sealing the tomb. \u00a0They go simply to pay their respects to Jesus.\u00a0 Their expectation is that the stone will be in place and Jesus\u2019 body will be inside.\u00a0 The death of Jesus shook them to the core and all they could do was weep.<\/p>\n<p>But then their expectations were shattered.\u00a0 In Matthew\u2019s account there was a great earthquake (in the Bible, always a sign that God was at work), an angel rolls the stone away, has a seat on the stone, announces that Jesus has been raised from the dead and invites the women to look inside the tomb to see for themselves that it was empty.<\/p>\n<p>In John\u2019s account, Mary sees that the stone has been rolled away.\u00a0 Assuming that someone has stolen the body of Jesus she runs to get Peter and the other disciple.\u00a0 When all of them arrive back at the tomb and enter it, they see that the death shroud of Jesus has been neatly folded (even the Risen Jesus made his bed\u2026a good lesson for all of us!)<\/p>\n<p>At this point all we know is that the body of Jesus is gone.\u00a0 Matthew\u2019s angel gives us a promise but that is all.\u00a0 In both Gospels the moment it all sinks in is when the risen Jesus appears to Mary.\u00a0 In Matthew\u2019s Gospel it is in hearing the greeting of Jesus in his own voice that prompts recognition.\u00a0 In John\u2019s account it is when Jesus calls out to Mary by name that she believes in the resurrection of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>In that moment all expectations have been torn apart.\u00a0 Jesus is alive.\u00a0 Life has conquered death, love has conquered hate, grace and forgiveness has conquered judgment and all that Jesus told and taught his followers is true and trustworthy.\u00a0 The resurrection of Jesus transformed the life of his followers in ways great and small.\u00a0 We see this happening in the biblical book of Acts and the rest of the New Testament.<\/p>\n<p>The same is true today, for the Risen Jesus is alive and with us.\u00a0 Because of the resurrection of Jesus our human expectations are torn apart and our lives are transformed by the love and forgiveness of God.\u00a0 We are given hope and the opportunity to be set free from feeling unworthy and undeserving of God\u2019s love.\u00a0 We are set free to not worry about our standing before God and thus free to serve others.\u00a0 As Jesus declared in John 8:36 \u201cWhen the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The resurrection of Jesus does not take us out of this world; it transforms this world through love and hope.\u00a0 There will still be questions, there will still be pain and suffering, and we will lose loved ones to death but because of Jesus we have hope for new beginnings including the beginning of life eternal.<\/p>\n<p>Christ has Risen!\u00a0 Christ has risen indeed!\u00a0 This Easter Sunday we remember just how much God loves each and every one of us and we celebrate the love of God shown through the risen Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In John\u2019s account of the resurrection of Jesus, Mary Magdalene does not immediately recognize Jesus (she believes him to be the gardener).\u00a0 After spending so much time with Jesus why do you think Mary did not recognize Jesus?\u00a0 What did it take for her to realize it was Jesus?<\/li>\n<li>In Matthew\u2019s account of the resurrection of Jesus, the author tells us that the women \u201cleft the tomb quickly with fear and great joy\u201d (verse 8).\u00a0 We might understand their joy but why would they feel fear?\u00a0 Why does the resurrected Jesus say \u201cdo not be afraid\u201d (verse 10)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have now spent six weeks in the Church year season of Lent.\u00a0 On Easter Sunday there will be a transformation of our worship.\u00a0 We sing hymns and songs of praise, alleluias will abound, and there will be flowers in church&#8211;all to symbolize and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Young A\u2019layah Robinson was transformed by the love of Jesus, her parents and her faith community.\u00a0 That love overflowed to others especially to foster children because A\u2019layah had the experience of being one.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t a big deal, she simply wanted to provide a toy, a small toy to others but that small gesture brought huge results.<\/p>\n<p>On this Easter Sunday are there ways you and\/or your faith community can show forth the transformation brought by the resurrection of Jesus?\u00a0 Take a moment to think about you own life experience (and how you answered the third question about A&#8217;layah project) and plan a way to celebrate the love of God by reflecting it to others.\u00a0 It does not have to be something superhuman, just a small gesture of love can make a world of difference and transform the lives of others by the love of God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God of Love, on this day our human expectations fade in the announcement of the good news that Jesus is risen from the dead and lives with us forever.\u00a0 Open our hearts and minds to the transformation which your love can bring and set us free to serve you and our neighbors with joy.\u00a0 With thankful and grateful hearts and lives we pray.\u00a0 Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dennis Sepper, Burnsville, MN \u00a0 Warm-up Question What did you expect when you got up this morning?\u00a0 Was it pretty much what you expect every morning?
