{"id":6099,"date":"2017-01-24T07:39:22","date_gmt":"2017-01-24T12:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=6099"},"modified":"2017-01-19T19:44:28","modified_gmt":"2017-01-20T00:44:28","slug":"january-29-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/january-29-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"January 29, 2017&#8211;Take the Stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>David Dodson, Fort Walton Beach, FL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you could have a conversation with anyone you wanted, living or dead, who would it be with?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Take the Stage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On January 8<sup>th<\/sup>, the 2017 Golden Globes aired across the nation.\u00a0 It was a night of awards for films and television of all sorts.\u00a0 In any other year, the big headline after the awards ceremony would have likely been about the biggest winners.\u00a0 After all, this year saw the film \u201cLa La Land\u201d earn a record-breaking seven Golden Globes.\u00a0 This year, though, that was overshadowed by one speech given by 67-year-old actress Meryl Streep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/01\/iStock-177307088.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6106 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/01\/iStock-177307088-300x209.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/01\/iStock-177307088-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/01\/iStock-177307088-768x534.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/01\/iStock-177307088-1024x712.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/01\/iStock-177307088-250x174.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/01\/iStock-177307088-503x350.jpg 503w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/01\/iStock-177307088.jpg 1228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Streep took the stage after winning the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award, an honorary Golden Globe awarded only once each year to the entertainer who made the most &#8220;outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment&#8221;.\u00a0 It was an honor for Streep, who joined the ranks of such film giants as Judy Garland, Sidney Poiter, and Walt Disney.<\/p>\n<p>As she took the stage, though, Streep surprised the crowd by her speech.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t about her film experience or her cinematic triumph.\u00a0 Instead, Streep made a speech about culture, diversity, and rhetoric.\u00a0 Though she didn\u2019t mention him by name, this speech was seen by most to be a criticism of President-Elect Donald Trump (specifically of his comments about a disabled reporter while Mr. Trump was campaigning).<\/p>\n<p>Reactions to Streep\u2019s speech ranged from admiration to anger.\u00a0 One Twitter user commented, \u201cThank you Meryl Streep. Bravery, poise, eloquence, and speaking for many rather than just for herself, and for what is right.\u201d\u00a0 However, others were angry at how Streep chose to spend her time on the stage.\u00a0 Kellyanne Conway, Mr. Trump\u2019s campaign manager, said she was \u201cconcerned that somebody with a platform like Meryl Streep&#8217;s is inciting people&#8217;s worst instincts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of our feelings about Mrs. Streep\u2019s speech, the reality is simple enough: When given a chance to speak at the podium of a broadly-televised and popular event, she chose to speak about an issue that she saw as gravely important.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you had the attention of your entire school for two minutes, what would you talk about? What about if you had the attention of the whole nation?<\/li>\n<li>One of the phrases Mrs. Streep stated was \u201cDisrespect invites disrespect\u201d. Then he began to speak, and taught them\u2026\u201d\u00a0 The context of this Sermon is quite important.\u00a0 Jesus has just begun his ministry and has called the first apostles.\u00a0 The Sermon on the Mount represents, as far as we know, his first major address to a huge crowd of people.\u00a0 There will certainly be more, but it all starts here!<\/p>\n<p>In Jesus\u2019 first address to his first huge crowd, it\u2019s reasonable to assume that he\u2019d start with something incredibly important to his mission and ministry.\u00a0 After all, wouldn\u2019t he have wanted to make the most of this chance to communicate to the masses?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s really important, then, to note that Jesus\u2019 very first words in this pivotal Sermon target those who are traditionally marginalized or considered weak.\u00a0 The first three Beatitudes target those who are shown in a state of weakness, turning their very weakness into power.\u00a0 The next four promise the fulfillment of those who seek virtue and goodness.\u00a0 Finally, the last two promise the fullness of God\u2019s kingdom to those who encounter trials because of their devotion to God.<\/p>\n<p>As Lutherans, we encounter another beautiful truth in these words.\u00a0 Luther taught that God\u2019s Word is more than just information.\u00a0 God\u2019s Word is actual creative power.\u00a0 In the beginning, God said, \u201cLet there be\u2026\u201d and there was.\u00a0 God\u2019s Word doesn\u2019t just describe reality \u2013 it creates reality.<\/p>\n<p>So when Jesus climbs a mountain, turns, and addresses the people, he\u2019s doing something profound.\u00a0 In the opening to his profoundly important Sermon on the Mount, Jesus speaks and changes the world.\u00a0 Jesus speaks the creative power of God\u2019s Word, creating a world in which traditional authority cannot stand against the power of humble, the meek, the persecuted, and the oppressed.\u00a0 Jesus issue the words that change our world.\u00a0 Amen!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What examples do you know from history or your own life of humble or peaceful figures effecting great change?<\/li>\n<li>Do we generally value peacefulness, meekness, purity, and persecution?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many images of Moses on Mount Sinai holding the tablets of the Ten Commandments (it turns out the Bible is big on stories of revelation happening on mountaintops).\u00a0 Create a parallel of this image by make a poster, depicting the Beatitudes as a series of numbered revelations, similar to the Ten Commandments.\u00a0 After all, like the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes teach us how to live and what to value!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heavenly Father, your Word shapes our world, lifting up the oppressed, comforting the afflicted, and challenging the comfortable.\u00a0 Show us how to mirror your love to the world.\u00a0 Help us to value those virtues your Son taught on the mountaintop.\u00a0 Be with us and teach us to find strength in weakness.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name we pray, Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Dodson, Fort Walton Beach, FL \u00a0 Warm-up Question If you could have a conversation with anyone you wanted, living or dead, who would it be with?
