News was the thing that expressed opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In our own day the problems seems to be that people have a hard time distinguishing fake news, partly because we are more likely to believe a lie if reinforces what we already believe.\u00a0 &#8220;If a lie is telling you something you want to hear, you&#8217;re more likely to think it is true,&#8221;says Sharon Kaye, philosophy professor at John Carroll University<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do you determine what news sources are reliable?\u00a0 What are your criteria for believing a story, or for sniffing out something made up?<\/li>\n<li>Is this the same or different with people who are speaking to you?<\/li>\n<li>What makes someone trustworthy?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Baptism of Our Lord<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=350029298\">Isaiah 42:1-9<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=350029335\">Acts 10:34-43<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=350029369\">Matthew 3:13-17<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Matthew wants his readers to know that Jesus is the real deal.\u00a0 Jewish history is full of what might be called \u201cfake Messiahs,\u201d and many in Matthew\u2019s time (and since) would list Jesus in that category, because he did not match expectations.\u00a0 Like a determined lawyer, Matthew is intent on proving that Jesus really is the Messiah, frequently citing the Jewish Scriptures (our Old Testament) to build his case.<\/p>\n<p>One major piece of Matthew\u2019s presentation is establishing Jesus\u2019 authority as a rabbi, or teacher (and also fulfiller) of God\u2019s law.\u00a0 What makes a rabbi credible?\u00a0 In his book <em>Velvet Elvis:\u00a0 Repainting the Christian Faith<\/em>, Rob Bell explains:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Different rabbis had different sets of rules, which were really different lists of what they forbade and what they permitted.\u00a0 A rabbi\u2019s sets of rules and lists, which was really what that rabbi\u2019s interpretation of how to live the Torah, was called that rabbi\u2019s yoke\u2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Most rabbis taught the yoke of a well respected rabbi who had come before them\u2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Every once in a while, a rabbi would come along who was teaching a new yoke, a new way of interpreting the Torah.\u00a0 This was rare and extraordinary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Imagine:\u00a0 A rabbi was claiming that he had a new way to understand the Scriptures that was closer to what God intended than the way of the rabbis who had come before him.\u00a0 A new take on the Scriptures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">The questions would immediately be raised:\u00a0 \u201cHow do we know this is truth?\u00a0 How do we know this rabbi isn\u2019t crazy?\u00a0 One of the protections for the rabbi in this case was that two other rabbis with authority would lay hands on the rabbi and essentially validate him.\u00a0 They would be saying, \u201cWe believe this rabbi has authority to make new interpretations.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s why Jesus\u2019 baptism was so important.\u00a0 John the Baptist was a powerful teacher and prophet who was saying publicly that he wasn\u2019t worthy to carry Jesus\u2019 sandals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cAnd a voice from heaven said, \u2018This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 A second voice affirmed Jesus\u2019 unique calling.\u00a0 The voice of God.\u00a0 Amazing.\u00a0 A Jewish audience reading Matthew\u2019s account of Jesus\u2019 baptism would pick up right away on Jesus\u2019 getting the affirmation of two powerful voices.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If God says you\u2019re legit, then you\u2019re legit.\u00a0 Jesus is the real deal.\u00a0 The good news is not fake news.\u00a0 God doesn\u2019t say it because it\u2019s true; it\u2019s true because God says it.<\/p>\n<p>This is also the good news of our own baptisms, where God affirms what some pastor who can\u2019t carry Jesus\u2019 sandals either has said: \u00a0that we also are God\u2019s beloved children, connected to Jesus and given the same Spirit.\u00a0 It must be true and trustworthy.\u00a0 We are loved, because God says so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why is it hard for some people to accept that Jesus is the Messiah?<\/li>\n<li>Who vouches for you?\u00a0 Have you ever vouched for someone else?<\/li>\n<li>What authority and responsibility does your baptism give you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Write a letter to your godparents.<\/li>\n<li>As a group, create a fake news story.\u00a0 Go around the circle, with each person adding one new sentence to the last.\u00a0 Edit and refine.\u00a0 Is your story believable?\u00a0 Why or why not?\u00a0 Was the process fun?\u00a0 In what ways can you see this possibility being abused?<\/li>\n<li>As a group, gather around a baptismal font or a bowl of water.\u00a0 Dip in your fingers and mark one another\u2019s forehead with the sign of the cross.\u00a0 Speak a blessing:\u00a0 \u201c<em>This is God\u2019s son\/daughter, the beloved, with whom God is well pleased!\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Voice of heaven, speak your love into our lives.\u00a0 Teach us to trust you.\u00a0 Help us to discern true from fake, in ourselves and in others.\u00a0 Renew us in the covenant and calling of baptism, that we may please and serve you in all we do, in the name of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brian Hiortdahl, Overland Park, KS \u00a0 Warm-up Question Whom do you trust?
