{"id":5957,"date":"2016-10-18T10:18:59","date_gmt":"2016-10-18T15:18:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/?p=5957"},"modified":"2016-10-11T12:16:56","modified_gmt":"2016-10-11T17:16:56","slug":"october-23-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/october-23-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"October 23, 2016&#8211;Suffering by Comparison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Chris Heavner, Clemson, SC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do we learn anything about another person if all they do is tell us how they compare to someone else?\u00a0 Why are we so tempted to rank ourselves?\u00a0 Why can\u2019t we simply, honestly say where we fit in?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suffering by Comparison<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the candidate you prefer for President of the United States, this has been a campaign season like nothing we have ever seen.\u00a0 Donald Trump secured the Republican nomination without ever having been previously elected.\u00a0 He emerged from a field of seventeen, many of whom had lots of previous political experience.\u00a0 Hilary Clinton finally pulled away from Bernie Sanders.\u00a0 Senator Sanders ran as a Democrat even though he was an Independent in previous election cycles.<\/p>\n<p>This campaign has been notable for other reasons as well.\u00a0 Many voters are frustrated that the Clinton and Trump spend more time comparing themselves to the other than telling us about themselves.\u00a0 Polling experts are probably advising them to do so.\u00a0 Saying how much \u201cbetter\u201d you are than the other candidate seems to result in more votes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/10\/shutterstock_296799968.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5964\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/10\/shutterstock_296799968-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"shutterstock_296799968\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/10\/shutterstock_296799968-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/10\/shutterstock_296799968-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/10\/shutterstock_296799968-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/10\/shutterstock_296799968-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/faithlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/10\/shutterstock_296799968.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>It seems to work, even though most of us say we don\u2019t like it.\u00a0 Is there something deep within us which moves us to compare one person to another?\u00a0 Do we just naturally look around in order to know whether we measure up?\u00a0 Do we need to denigrate others in order to affirm our own value and feel desirable?<\/p>\n<p>Let us hope this isn\u2019t the case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do you think the Presidential candidates spend so much time comparing themselves to the other?<\/li>\n<li>Would we prefer to know who or what someone \u201cisn\u2019t,\u201d more than we would like to know who they are?<\/li>\n<li>To whom are you inclined to compare yourself?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=343200102\">Jeremiah 14:7-10, 19-22<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=343200132\">2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?ql=343200171\">Luke 18:9-14<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Text links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/\">Oremus Bible Browser<\/a>. You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who are you, a Pharisee or a tax collector?<\/p>\n<p>In reading this parable, it is way too tempting to think of ourselves as the humble man who returns to his home \u201cjustified.\u201d\u00a0 And yet, if we are reading this blog or discussing the readings for Sunday we probably have more in common with the Pharisee.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that the Pharisees were a group of folks who took seriously their walk with God.\u00a0 They attended youth group, they went to summer camp, they took turns as acolyte and communion assistant.\u00a0 They also responded well to the fall stewardship campaign.\u00a0 When the Pharisee in this story speaks of his honorable actions he is not exaggerating.\u00a0 Nor is he totally wrong in noting the transgressions of the tax collector.<\/p>\n<p>Tax collectors in Jesus\u2019 day were not merely employees of some Internal Revenue Service.\u00a0 They oversaw no set tax rates or income brackets.\u00a0 They schemed ways to collect the most that they could, taking their income from collecting more than the authorities expected.\u00a0 The tax collector may have cause to think he had transgressed the 7<sup>th<\/sup> commandment.\u00a0 Luther\u2019s Catechism reminds us that we break this commandment when we acquire our neighbor\u2019s money or property using crooked deals.\u00a0 We sin, according to this commandment, unless we help our neighbors improve and protect their property and income.<\/p>\n<p>Neither the Pharisee nor the tax collector should be our role models.\u00a0 Each is way too focused on himself.\u00a0 When we enter the Temple, synagogue, or church our eyes are to be on God.\u00a0 Instead of worrying about how we stand in comparison to those around us, we look to the one who justifies.\u00a0 It is not our actions, nor our avoidance of particular behaviors, which makes us right in God\u2019s eyes.\u00a0 Rather, our salvation is found in the promise of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can you find reasons to admire the Pharisee in today\u2019s reading? Discuss how our congregation might look were all the members to be like this man (regular in prayer, in giving, in studying scripture).<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledging our sins is essential to forgiveness being offered. Why do we find it easy to admit, even in the silence of our own hearts, the things we have done and failed to do?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a hierarchy of wrongful deeds; are there some sins which are worse than others?\u00a0 Is the difference in how they affect others?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using pencil and paper, make a list of the transgressions you committed in the past week. This is your list; no one will see it.\u00a0 Now ask yourself: \u201cDoes knowing no one will see it allow you add other items to the list?\u201d\u00a0 A prayer guide asks God to help me with the sins I have labored so mightily to hide from others that I have hidden them from myself.<\/li>\n<li>Even before you think \u201cWhy,\u201d write the name of someone in your community of faith whom you admire. Now, note the why.\u00a0 What is it that they do, what is it they say, or how they live their life which has led you to think highly of them?<\/li>\n<li>The denomination sponsoring this blog (the ELCA) has a set liturgy for Individual Confession and Forgiveness [<em>Evangelical Lutheran Worship, <\/em>pages 243-44]. This is a powerful experience.\u00a0 Discuss with your pastor the possibility of participating in such a service.<\/li>\n<li>Engage yourself in a political discussion.
