You can find the calendar of readings for Year B at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Congregations-and-Synods\/Worship\/Lectionary\/YearB\">Lectionary Readings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For lectionary humor and insight, check the weekly comic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agnusday.org\/\">Agnus Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gospel Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jesus, knowing he will die, shares one final evening with his disciples.\u00a0 He begins by washing their feet (despite initial resistance from Peter) and sharing bread with his betrayer.\u00a0 After doing this, he states his dying wish as a new commandment:\u00a0 <em>Love one another.\u00a0 Just as I have loved you, you should also love one another.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Later that same evening, after repeating this commandment (15:12), Jesus elaborates:\u00a0 <em>No one has greater love than this, to lay down one\u2019s life for his friends <\/em>(15:13).\u00a0 Like Chen, Jesus sees life for others coming from his death.\u00a0 On this night in the other gospels, Jesus institutes his supper of Holy Communion\u2014his life continuing to live inside his disciples\u2019 bodies, giving them new strength.<\/p>\n<p>This is how Jesus is \u201cglorified.\u201d\u00a0 For him, glory does not come from fame or riches or popularity or success or adulation.\u00a0 It comes through death.\u00a0 He does not receive glory in, but radiates it out through the love his disciples show and share, following his lead.\u00a0 His final wish is not anything for himself, but for the ongoing blessing of others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What parallels do you see between Chen and Jesus?<\/li>\n<li>How do you define glory?\u00a0 How does that compare with how the world and Jesus define it?<\/li>\n<li>In what tangible ways do members of your group\/family\/church \u201clove one another\u201d?\u00a0 Would others recognize that you are Jesus\u2019 disciples by the way that you treat one another?<\/li>\n<li>Who would you be willing to die for?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity Suggestions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As a group, wash one another\u2019s feet.\u00a0 Follow with discussion about how it feels.\u00a0 After that, make plans for washing the feet of others you know, perhaps in a homeless shelter, nursing home, or another setting with people who are often overlooked or undervalued.\u00a0 Who would benefit from this form of loving service in your community?<\/li>\n<li>Research the <a href=\"http:\/\/wish.org\/\">Make-a-Wish Foundation<\/a>.\u00a0 What stories from their work inspire you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Closing Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God of glory, graciously continue to fill our hearts, our bloodstreams, and our lives with the love of Jesus.\u00a0 Strengthen us to love one another and teach us how to give life to others.\u00a0 Comfort the dying and give them, like Chen, an opportunity to help others live.\u00a0 Transform all our troubles into glory through Jesus Christ, our crucified and risen Lord.\u00a0 Amen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brian Hiortdahl, Overland Park, KS \u00a0 Warm-up Question If you knew you had only a short time to live and were granted one last wish, what would it be?
